I've done it before but i have never had to arrange to get the tickets myself. And teh airlines are being most unhelpful....
so i'm looking for some advice on how to do this. It's going to be an international flight btw, US to England, and also back again

I don't have much experience of flying standby, but web-based deals I use a lot. Check out the websites of the airlines & see if they have any special "web-only" deals at the moment (the best one ever was virginblue's $1 fares between Sydney & other Australian cities).
