confused

I was just mucking around juggling talking to performing friend and he told me that it's better to be a jack of all trades type performer .

I didn't understand what he meant by it really i thought you would have to be a reel pro at everything that you do .

For example those guys at tepooka

Instead of just bearly there adequite .

Im just wondering what your thoughts on this ?

that shrewd and knavish sprite

Called Robin Good Fellow ; are you not he that is frighten of the maidens of the villagery - fairy

I dunno either... I love what I do, and I'd like to keep it that way. Sure I'll get better and I want to get better, but keep it fun, you know?

I wanna be a poi master when I grow up... ubblove

Depends on your preference... I do poi, staff, contact juggling and I'm going to buy devilsticks in a while just because I like all this... If you want to start something although you don't really want to or enjoy it, then it's not likely that you'll stick to it for very long.. Keep doing the art(s) you like and you'll be just fine...

While I'm not a performer, I prefer being a jack of all trades - it means you can switch between any toys you feel in the mood for.
Admittedly it means that you always find someone better at everything you do, but it also means that you find bits that overlap and make most of the things you do better.

As a performer, I don't know, but I imagine it'd be handy to have a broad range of skills that you can turn your hand to.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

I am a jack of most and (almost) a master of one. My first love is juggling but i also do Unicyling, devil stick, poi, cigar boxes, diabolo, fire. I would definately say that the more you do, the more influenced you are by other things, so it's much better to do more things than just one. I don't perform, but from a performing aspect I'm sure it helps.

i think its pretty rare to find an object manipulator that has only ever played with one prop.

by the time you have 'mastered' one prop (and by mastered i mean 'reached a competent performance standard') you will inevitably have played with a couple more.

i think it was mentioned in the "poi as viewed by other manipulators" thread.

i don't consider that i spin staff (although i could probably spin for a burn if i had to) because until i spend a decent amount of time alone with a prop, i don't consider it to be one of my skills.

i find that i can only get really passionate about one type of prop at a time - possibly clubs and balls at the same time or maybe poi and clubswinging at the same time but generally, just one prop will be the #1 use of your time.
i used to spin poi every single day and only juggle every now and again when i was around jugglers.
now i juggle every day and only spin poi when around poi'ers.

i really want to learn double staff but i have a feeling that when i am outside this summer and it is not windy, my first choice will be clubs ubblove

i learnt poi and juggling around the same time and have since picked up staff and occasionally play with other toys such as rope dart or meteor.
i'd say poi is what i'm best at but i get bored with just one toy!! i can juggle in my bedroom and carry poi everywhere but only practic staff when i mean to...

as for performances, people are often impressed by different skills and there seem to be so many people around that just spin poi. by offering fire or glow juggling as well it places me in a better position for getting gigs... it's not the reason i do it though! i see performances as targets to work towards for any skill and a chance to prove to yourself that you have improved/ and or reached a certain level...

like coleman says if you wanna try other stuff go for it, but only because you want to learn it for your own enjoyment!!!

Don't forget there's another half to that saying.....A jack of all trades....but a master of none.

I think he must have meant it's better to be good at a few things like being abe to staff, poi, juggle etc to a reasonable standard instead of just being fantastic at one discipline.
Personally I kind of agree, I'd much rather do lots of different sorts of arts but could I devote enough time to be great at them all??

Let's relight this forum ubblove

i think it depends - on you and on the situation.

if you're performing then being good at lots of things is great if you're doing a cosy performance - talking to the audience and keeping their interest. On the other had if you're really good at one thing you can do a really arty performance with some amazing technical stuff.

the same when you're just doing stuff for fun.it's good to be able to switch to something else for a good bit of music or if you feel like it, but at the same time its also fun to get really in to something and spend days practicing and becoming a genious!

What's better? Since quality can't be defined I presume you mean on a resume as a performer.

In my opinon, the more toys (or even skill) the better. They're all related anyway...it's just different forms of movement. Someone with more skills (be they fwirling, theatrical, first aid, dance, gymnastics or 2 ball juggling) on the CV can surely bring more to a production of any sort. In experience and expertise.

Beside, the more toys the more fun....case in point.

Twirling/juggling = fun smile

Twirling/juggling + stilts = very very fun + inability to stop laughing biggrin ubbrollsmile

Ok, went along with corky to circus skills on friday night. They don;t do much poi up there but i brought them along anyway. Its wicked becasue tehy have 3 massive suitcases filled with toys, you can just pick up what you like and start having a go! if you need help peopel will help you, and point out where your going wrong. i prefer to be a jack of all tradea cos you can pick up something else when ur bored.
