Hi,

I was wondering if you rate someone, if you can RE:rate them.

Or is it whatever you put as your first rating, that's it??

Because you know peoples opinions change...

I don't like this rating system at all...
I'd be very curious to see what others think of it.
I don't know about your question Katinca, sorry. I rated a few people, all 5 star to me and then realized that I don't enjoy rating at all cause it does not particularly create a gentle and good atmosphere (who gave me those stars ? who did not ? bla bla bla)... and so I stopped...

Yeah its a bit unsettling.

I rated a few people, because I was mucking around, and I gave some low ratings as a joke.

But now I feel bad for doing that, because I was only being silly. And I want to change the rating, because these people don't deserve what I gave them as I was being silly.

Allthough not really related, this reminds me of highschool and how I felt towards grades in philosophy class... you know ?

I can imagine grades in Math, chemistry, even language or litterature (hmmm... well...) But to give a grade to a young pupil who is in the process of developping his overview over life, the world, death, infinity, good, bad... is like saying "your thoughts and insight on life is worth so and so"... how violent ...

And just teh same... how can you rate someone ? even if this girl is unpleasant to me, how can I say she is 0 star ... you know ?

Yes, I also know that I am probably being too sensitive about all that and overreacting - which is very typical of me anyway - but self concious and paranoid as I am... I am glad I cut down the rating for me because as vain and silly as it may sound I think it would have affected me to follow this somewhat meaningless and yet existing thermometer (?) of how people like you...

I love that some people like me and I am emailing and meeting them and developping a relationship. I love that some don't care and I think it is healthy that some can't stand me. I just don't feel the urge to know what the ratio of the three categories is...

you know what I mean ?

I don't see it much of a problem here. Everyone is pretty much nice to everyone and the lowest rating i've seen there is 4 stars which is unbelievable. On another messageboard I frequent, people are a little more immature and the average is 2 or 3 stars. I myself am rated a 2 stars on this other board. It doesn't mean i'm a mean person or anything, just like to express my views and people might not agree with me so they rate me a low number.

oh ya, if it's so much of a problem an easy solution would be to turn off the rating system in your profile. You don't have to be rated if you don't want to. It's in good fun anyways

hmm, i have a feeling my rating is going to go down very very soon lol.

But see ? that is my point.
In real life, i tend to very much like people who disagree with me, word their opinion. i a not gonna like someone just cause they are nice to me (allthough kindness is very important for me).
And for some reason this rating thing just feels like "is he nice" ? when this is not teh point really ...

i have no experience of other BB and so don't know how things work in the matrix. I just know that i feel this rating thing simply does not fit with the nice , open atmosphere here...
again, i am probably over-reacting so don't pay attention.
And yes, Phunky, I have turned down the rating system on my profile. But I still want to word how I feel about it in general.

Honestly, i don't like it either (2 stars on that other board is kinda disturbing lol). Though because this board is probably the most mature and civiled boards that i've ever come across (and i've visited many msgboards in my time) it's one of the few boards that the rating system would work. Though what i've noticed is that everyone is getting a high rating which kinda defeats the purpose heh. I guess the ratings are there to rate the trolls if they ever pop up. To warn who to look out for.

So it was you who brought my average down then was it Kate?

I must admit i abused the system to start off with (giving all my friends and people I admire/respect 4 or 5 stars. Except Cass who switched hers off straight away).

But now I'm trying to use it more objectively. Rating people on their actually contribution to the site.

Am feeling slightly guilty for giving one american boy one star because i didn't like the way he phrased his response to me though....

Being grown up is hard Kate. Do you really think I can do it?

That could have been me Cantus

I turned mine off, I wanted to be like a 1 or a 2, just to be different. Then I could argue that it is scored like golf.

But Kat, I don't think you can re-rate them. You can never change your mind, bummer.

I guess it all depends on what the ratings are for. If they are there for compliments.... well they're not really much of a compliment. However if someone is just trolling around (it does happen on this board) the star system might help the mods in trying to control that person's privlages on the board. Maybe there should be a thread rating system. So the mods can see how people feel about a thread instead of an individual.

In the profile you can see who voted for you, and you can tell who's being sarcastic and who is not. To me they are just something more to look at. It also means someone has paid you alittle extra attention one way or another.

Nothing good ever comes from hanging out with normal people.

I think that there are a couple of ways of looking at it. Recognition is nice and it would be kind

of a compliment to be highly rated , but the way I see it is that I have been coming here a long time

and I get alot out of this website and that in comparison with a few stars against my name aint much.

And to be totally honest it really wouldn't make a difference to me what so ever.

So what if people think your good or bad . I feel that i have contributed in my time here, helped a couple

of people out and gained alot of advise and thats enough for me. It aint a popularity contest which

this rating system seems to be portraying.

soooo... silly and bored as I am today I tried to give everyone I know 5 stars so that there is equitr on board and then realized how useless that was too... popularity contest is maybe what I felt that was too and why it bugged me ... that's as simple as that ..;
anyway ...
no big deal I guess

I don't know about anyone else. But the stars I have make me feel wanted and needed. Which is good (for me) as I some times feel sad and it's a welcome pick up.

It's nice to be appreciated.

I can see how ratings might be helpful, if this were a board with a huge number of participants and a way to filter out the low-rated participants (sort of like slashdot).

I've got a flattering 5-star rating, but that's based on only one vote, so it shouldn't carry much weight. For votes to have any meaning you need a lot of them, so that the high votes your friends give you just because they're friends, and the low votes that jerks give just because they're jerks become background noise.

Disagreements can be productive--it's in *how* you express that disagreement, and what you disagree over.

Personally I wouldn't rate anybody good or bad unless I'd actually met them face to face. There's only so much you can learn about a person from reading there posts. whether it be 50 or 1000.
Personally I think I'm a totally different person in real life. ( at least an extra inch ).
For instance I get a chance to think about what I'm saying and if I say somethin thick I can always edit a message before too many people have a chance to read it.
Anyway I way prefered the old message board. It took me at least a week to figure out that people had actually left messages. I thought everybody had given up at first.
Ciao for now,
Sam

im surprised i got any stars at all.

hey Cantus, are you talking about me? Wait, i know, it was the crack i made about Fraggle Rock right?

Ya know im kidding, FR was the shit when i was little.

I know i have had my fair share of pissy comments, or misunderstood wit that has offended people from time to time, But that only makes us human, and i would do anything in my power to help someone in need, even if its just to answer a simple question.

But the love and willingness on this board i think goes way beyond little stars. maybe the symbols should be changed to something else, like little banannas or something, or little beer cans.
