Very cool... have you been spinning poi for longer than 2 weeks, but just started fire, or just been spinning poi for 2 weeks in general? If the latter, I'm EXTREMELY amazed, that'd be amazing progress for 2 weeks. You seem like you like your wraps quite a lot, alternating right/left arm wraps can be quite tricky and you seem to have them down smile Keep it up, looking forward to future videos.

You have a tendancy to lean forwards which looks more then a bit wacky, Also I think your spinning a bit faster then your control threshold, slow down a bit and it should look smoother.

Pretty good for 2 weeks though.

His style and speed would suggest to me that he spun glowsticks before fire. The leaning forward thing is just fear of the fire I think. Hes got the 5 beat and BTB weave down which isnt usually learnt in 2 weeks. I could be wrong about all that stuff but Id be surprised.

Yep, looks like towel bits coming off... most obvious when it goes in to that weird sepia tone stuff.

the dude must have been spinning poi of some sort for more than 2 weeks before going on to fire. either that or he has spent a lot of those 2 weeks practising poi to death. i was nowhere near that good after 2 weeks (but i did not practise very long each time i tried)

arsnHow do you change this thing???

Totally agree with Icon on this one, the stance which is done through out the video is that of a glow stick twirler starting up with fire poi, it's the difference of the weight of both, he's arm jump out and he appears somewhat affraid of the flame... of course, I just may be being picky... tongue

I saw a double hand wrap thrown in there - only a glow stick twirler would try that with fire after only two weeks wink Nice one, though - I've never seen a pure glow-string'er go to fire, it's always been the other way around...

I do poi nearly every day. But it's not like I'm addicted or anything. I mean, sure, I am always conscious of exactly where my poi are at all times, but I'm not obsessed. um.. Anyone have the number for Poi-ers Anon?

Fire poi is no different to glowstick poi or any other sort. If you can spin, you can spin any thing.

So how come it took over a year to spin fire?

Cool moves though, nice wraps, dodgy planes, too quick

There is a bit of difference, Poi. Sure, you can do just about all the same moves with both but differing weights, handles, shapes, chains, etc make it kinda tough to translate those moves between mediums. Theres also a big difference in the mental state. Reguardless of how good you are at spinning, most people have an innate fear of fire that takes a bit of practice to get over.

I disagree that there is a difference at all.

I do agree that people have a healthy fear of fire, and that's good. But I don't find any difference between spinning fire or glowsticks or tea towels or socks. If you Can Spin, it doesn't matter what you are spinning.

I just get pissed off with people who 'only spin fire' or 'only spin glowsticks' and get really arsey about it, I just spin. Sometimes I spin fire, sometimes I spin glowsticks but mostly I spin cheap Socks because it has nothing to do with What you spin, only How you spin them.

I would much rather watch someone who is totally focused on what they are spinning, and totally spinning for themselves ~ even if they are only doing 'easy' moves really well than someone who tries to spin fire really quickly with little control ~ this guy obviously can control his poi, he just needs to relax into it and spin for himself instead of for the camera. Which is very hard to do.

Unless you use patheticaly small tube cores, there are some things you can't do with fire simply because of the weight limits the speed. Sure you could do the same moves at a slower speed, but the effect isn't there.

Theres also a whole family of glowstick moves that require extensive contact with the body (those wraps that you drag around your neck and stuff, I think they are called tracers) which you would need quite a bit of protective gear to do with fire.

So cover the metal with kevlar, and you're set tongue

No point in arguing - maybe it takes a lot of practice and care to translate some moves from glow to fire and the other way around.

Nice vid - I'd like to see you do more with your corkscrew. If fast is your pace then go with it, but don't sacrifice control.

I'm going to have to agree with Poipoipoi on this one. It shouldnt matter what you're spinning. Of course your style will change slightly depending on what it is, but thats because different poi act differently. Some are longer and heavier and give a slower more graceful spin, some like socks have stretch and give a little. Some are light and fast like glowsticks, all it takes is a little getting used to. Other than moves that include blatently grabbing the head for long amounts of time, I don't see why nearly everything cant be translated. The trick is figuring out how.
