So ask any doctor (except a surgeon) about the hardest part of medical school and you will invariably get the answer that it was their required Surgery rotation during their third year of training.
As of today, I have finished my required Surgery rotation, and assuming that I passed the final exams, I have completed that requirement for the Doctor of Medicine degree.
What that means is that I will never again, as long as I live, be required to scrub in on an operation, or even to set foot in an operating room, really. The only exception will be that I may have to go into an O.R. to care for a baby delivered by C-section at some point. But I will never have to maintain sterile technique, stand next to an operating table for hours, or hold a reatractor in some anatomically impossible position ever again.
In other words, I have survived the roughest part of medical school. 18 months to go.

never had a doubt in my mind you'd do well 
truly mike, you are a very intelligent and awesome guy with a great heart. from someone who has been thru the hell of grad school, i can imagine how hard med school is, so i give you mad props 
you deserve a party!!! I was always scared with my mother's obsession with the good scissors. It made me wonder if there were evil scissors lurking in the house somewhere.

First of all, congrats on passing what is deemed to be the most difficult part of your training.
But if your not required to scrub into an operation, and maintain sterile technique, who is? Just curious.

Well done kiddo. It must be a really good feeling to know that you have come so far.
Here is to one of the loveliest and most intelligent people I know who has not only had a tough year studying, but has also had a tough year personally. I can only admire and aspire to the strength and wisdom it has given you. It was a day for screaming at inanimate objects.
What this calls for is a special mix of psychology and extreme violence...

I was required to. I just don't have to do that any more. The only doctors that actually perform major operations are surgeons and obstetricians/gynecologists. Family practitioners sometimes do, but not if there's a surgeon available.

Is she willing to have no life as long as she lives?
Don't get me wrong. Surgeons can do amazing things to help people. I have nothing but the utmost respect for them and for the work that they do, even if I sometimes disagree with their view of patient outside the O.R.
But I couldn't do it.

Not really sure. But she'll start as an HO in the summer, so she's got another 2 years of being an HO to basically decide.

She did mutter about wanting to be an army surgeon at one point, mostly while the rest of the family where marching to stop the war in Iraq. This didn't go down hugely well with the rest of us.
I'm not sure how good a doctor she is, but I wouldn't, personally, trust her bedside manner, and I think she's overly arrogant about certain aspects of medicine (I remember having a huge argument with her when she was at the end of her first year about some medical topic (relating to AIDS and HIV) and she asserted something (which they'd been presumably taught), and it was something that another friend of mine was just starting a PhD on, so it wasn't known for definite).
We'll see, though. She's certainly been through a reasonable amount in the 6 years (or whatever) of study.
