Well, as my original intro was lost, I guess I get the chance to redo my room!!! Feel free to come on in, just PLEASE take your shoes off at the door! Thank you. smile

Well here's me (again)... biggrin

*NAME- Amanda

*SEX- female

*AGE- 23

*LOCATION- Hmmm... a tricky one! Currently in Durham. I spend my summers in France (miles from civilization), and spring and autumn in Wales (do sheep count as civilization? If so, then a thriving community!) ubblol

*FAV. TOYS- at the moment my fire poi, but also my juggling balls, diabolo, my new staff, guitar, mountain bike, and of course my beloved kayak!...too many more to mention!

*TWIRLING SINCE- learned bits of stuff since 2000, but only really got into it this year. I was on crutches for 3wks, after dislocating my knee (ow!), so I spent all the time learning new poi stuff (every cloud has a silver lining eh?).

*OCCUPATION- Outdoor Activity Instructor/ river guide

*HOBBIES- naturally my poi and stuff, but also do lots of kayaking, canoeing, climbing, mountain biking, snowboarding, and bits of other sports.

*FAV. PLACE- Specific favourite one is sat on the edge of the cliff, overlooking the gorge where I work in France, with nothing around for miles apart from the wild boar, and watching either the sunset in the distance, or one of the impressive lightning storms we have.

I also love anywhere where I can sit on a mountain or beside a river, hearing nothing but the noises of nature. A BIG reminder of the beauty of it all... ubblove

Anyway, thats pretty much me in a nutshell! Feel free to come and chill in my room- its a great place for relaxing and being at one with nature! (and who said i was a hippie?! peace ). On the plus side, tea and cakes are supplied for free!!! And if i'm feeling generous i may even let Narr in with her weird marmite/chocolate spread mix! euch!

Catch you all soon, wave

Mand.

No hot springs (we were staying slopeside), but a huge hot tub that we had to ourselves.
But, soon the snow will be melted enough to go to the half way hotsprings in BC. It's like a little magical fairy world, deep in the forest, and about as far from comercialised hot springs as you can get. smile

I was always scared with my mother's obsession with the good scissors. It made me wonder if there were evil scissors lurking in the house somewhere.

As it is, I spend way too much time on the computer. Looking forward to the next trip to North America in just over three weeks. smile Probably then I'll only get online to check e-mails and such.

Chicago for what what???
Man I hated Chicago when I went there. I only went as far as one terminal to another in the airport, but I really hated it. It was big and confusing and I got lost and I almost missed my plane. frown

So, yesterday I managed to finish the new pair of pants I was making for fire spinning. I wanted something that would look nice for performing in, that didn't get in the way like wrap pants do.

These are exactly what I wanted. They're the first set of pants I've ever made that have a proper waistband and zip and hook closures. I've made loads of pairs of wrap pants (dead easy, as they're basically just 2 rectangles, and close with ties). Then I made a normal pair of pants with elasticated waist (easiest type to make), but the elasticated waist made me feel like a grandma.

Anyway, I managed to make these new ones, and I love them. They're all fitted nicely around the waist and hips, and widen out towards the bottoms. They're all flowy and look awesome! biggrin

I've spent a lot of time lately trying to sort out my head and my life.
I was having serious issues with getting the kind of job I wanted, because none of my canoe/ kayak/ river rescue qualifications transfer over from the UK to Canada.

My choice ended up being
1) Redo all my paddling qualifications, and carry on in my career of canoe/ kayak coach and river guide.
2) Take the opportunity to completely change careers, and try something new.

The more I thought about it, the more obvious it became that it had to be number 2. I've done 6 years in paddlesports, and now is the time to try a new path and get some different experiences.

The one thing I've always wanted to do since I was really young is become a paramedic, so that's what I've decided to do.
Working out in the wilderness for so many years, running fairly high risk activities, has given me quite a bit of first hand experience at dealing with first aid incidents- some of them life threatening (minor cuts and scrapes to my clients- the major incidents were dumbass tourists we came across on the rivers).
Anyway, it's something I've always been good at, so now I've decided to take it a step further and make it my job.

The downside is that I can't work in the health services on my work permit, so I want to be finishing my training about the same time as I gain permenent residency. I don't know yet whether this will be a year or 3 years time. Then again, I'll probably need 3 years to save up the $8,000 it's going to cost me for the courses!

I also need a drivers license, so I can get my class 4 license to drive an ambulance. As it takes a minumum of 3 years to get a full drivers license in Alberta, I'm going back to the UK for a month or so in Nov/ Dec, and doing an intensive driving course (I can then swap my UK license for a full Alberta license).

Anyway, I'm extremely excited by it! I know this is going to be a turning point in my life, and having a career again that I'm interested in will make me a very happy person.

Paddling is a lot of fun, I sure enjoyed my brief exposure to it and often wish I had more time to be back running and paddling in the mountains. But helping save people will be a great thing as well. Good luck with it all Mand.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the support smile

It's going to be a difficult journey. I'm really not good at studying, and there seems to be so many times on the EMT program that you can be thrown off the course. It's making me quite nervous. But it's something I really want to do, so I'm hoping that will drive me enough to spend all the many hours with my head in a text book.

I just hope that Spitfire still thinks that this is such a good idea once I start pinning diagrams of various parts of the human body all over our apartment, in an attempt to learn it all. lol

Too true.

Except for you George- you're just trying to wiggle your way out of trouble! tongue

So, now that I've moved to Canada and am finally getting used to stop signs and driving on the right, I've got to get my head back into british mode.

When I lived there, driving (in theory) made perfect sense. Now I'm desperately trying to get my head around roundabouts, and wondering why we have such rediculous names for pedestrian crossings. (Zebra, Toucan, Pelican... and I've no idea about the difference).

If you hadn't guessed, I'm slowly learning my british driving theory in my spare time.

Also, provided we can get nominated by the province, it's looking like getting permanent residency might be a one year process as opose to a three year process.

That is, one year from when we get all the hundreds of forms done for security check, employment history, education, addresses, family details, name of your dog when you were 7, how many spoons of sugar you have in your tea, what colour underwear you have.... etc etc
So probably about 2 years from now.
