My folks are paranoid survivalist religious types, and they subscribe to all sorts of conspiracy-theory publications, which sparked my curiosity as to whather anyone else on these boards feels that the current military and political situations have any religious significance? Stuff is going on over in Israel, etc, and some believe that it's some kind of foretold prophecy taking shape - what're your thoughts?

The thing about it is that you do not have to be the “paranoid survivalist religious types” to believe in the end times as described in Revelation in the Christian bible. Every religion has their profits and prophecies that their members try to understand and try apply to what is happening in the word today.

Let’s face it, end of the world prophecies have been around for a long time and in different religions, not only Christianity. The big problem is that these prophesies do not give specific time/dates and some are so vague with the signs, that it gives the modern man the fits trying to figure them out. Then throw in multiple prophesies for a single event. They both give the same end results, but they may give different signs or the same signs in a different order. We want to know details so that the “problem” can be fixed and the dire prophesy adverted.

Do I believe that what is going on in Israel the start of the Revelation prophecy? Yes, it could be. Am I positive? No. Like any prophecy, you must not only take the prophecy; you must take the teachings and the belief that goes with said prophet. As we are speaking of the Christian Armageddon you must take into consideration other text of the faith. The example that I give is Matt 16:1-3 where the religious leaders are testing Jesus and he speaks of his resurrection after his death. “He replied, "When evening comes, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,' and in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.” There are prophecies about his birth, death and resurrection hundreds of years before it took place and people did not realize that what was happening at the time of his birth, death and resurrection. When any religions end time prophecy comes, what makes anyone believe that the signs will be interpreted in time and correctly to avoid the disaster, if it can even be avoided at all?

An instance is the prophecies of Nostradamus. They are vague, with no dates/time and several prophecies are considered to be foretelling of the same event. Have they happened? There are people that say some have and can give you credible events that match the prophecy. But there are other people that can take the same text and give you a convincing argument that it has not happened. Can we avoid them if they have not happened? Only if we can figure out the time in which it is going to happen. Let’s face it, as a race we are mostly reactive. We normally react to the immediate problem that has been created because we did not act early enough to avoid the problem in the first place.

Prophecy is a strange thing, faith plays a big part in it and you don’t know that it is a true prophecy until it has happened and once it has happened it is to late to try to change the circumstances so the prophecy will not be fulfilled. That’s the scary part, knowing that it is coming and not knowing when it is coming or if there is anything that can be done to stop it.

Yeah, just saying my folks are the types who believe anything they read... and that makes them paranoid. Dad's got his whole food stockpile in the basement for when he has to survive the nuclear winter, Mom has her entire Nostradamus translation/interpretation series so she can predict when Dad will have to crawl in his hole and hide for years... didn't it specifically say that nobody will know when the End is about to happen anyway? smile

Wasn't saying that everyone who tries to find significance in the events today is paranoid or anything, just laying out at the beginning how serious some people are about this stuff.

I totally agree with you. At times I feel sorry for those that go overboard, we can only prepare for so much. Someday we will have an Armageddon of some sort (prophesy/man) because some country will get trigger happy with a couple of nuclear bombs going to one of the major powers in the world, with my luck it will with the US, and then next thing you know the sky will be full of them. Welcome WWIII. Can an individual or a family stockpile/prepare enough for this type of disaster? I don’t think so, but whoever is left will live by the law of survival of the fittest.

Personally I believe in the rapture and that I hope God takes me before all of this happens. I’m a pansy and I wouldn't be able to handle it.

well, i fugure that when the end comes, we're all gonna die, so there's no point in cowering away, you'll only cower to live to cower for another few hours/days/weeks. if the end of the world is nigh, you may as well have fun before you become a whiff of carbon, hydrogen and ozone.

As a simple rule in life goes, "Don't hate on your folks".

When you think about it, the end of the world is the end of the world, no matter how it comes about be it Biblical or Nostradomas, it doesn't really matter, it ends!

Your old man's fall out shelter might just come in handy some day, you never know when a tornado or a fire might happen and just thrash your whole house, then instead of thinking "my dad is a kook", you'll be like "good thing dad thought ahead".

My views on the end of the world, if you can't stop it, don't worry about it!

People have been waiting for Armageddon since shortly after JC was nailed up. I studied eschatology for some years and eventually concluded that if people got on with living a fruitful life - as opposed to worrying about 'The End' - then the horrors they imagine to lay in the future would never come to pass. There would be too much good being done in the world!

On the other hand, we could just push 'The Button' and find out who's right! biggrin

the main qualm i have with armageddon, is that i don't think it's going to be nearly as exciting as it should be.... I want horsemen, and wars between weirdarse supernatural creatures.... if it's more like the film armageddon then i shall be sorely disappointed, biblical armageddon sounds way more fun.

Clubbing seals doesn't sound like my kind of sport, but I figure my lists long enough without 'em - politicians generally spank, lawyers spank, marketing execs spank, multinationals spank, Blair & Bush spank spank spank spank........

You don't club them, it's too messy.
You have to open them neatly and I think that things come out.
I'm going to have to find my bible and look all this up.

Oh yeah, I think we need some wormwood. Possibly we make absinthe out of it.

Bloody hell, this apocalypse is getting to be too much like hard work.
