We will be hiring in an additional security team and team of stewards to be
outside the venue keeping an eye on the parked cars. We are very aware of
the problems at past rex events and are doing everything to counteract this
problem. The same team are also going to be working at the Tip.World event
in November and any other promoters out there wanting the same aid, please
get in contact.

*please note – due to circumstances beyond our control, Protoculture will
no longer be able to join us due to visa problems the artist has
experienced in Japan. After a long struggle with the embassies both in
London and Japan, a return journey from Japan cannot be granted for the
artist. From all of us at Liquid Connective and Nano Records we apologise
however we are very pleased to announce the debut UK appearance of
Hydrophonic, cutting edge act from Nano Records/South Africa who will be
joining us on the night.

Dear Liquid Connective members

Now that the dust has settled from the weekend of the party that never was
we feel ready to explain exactly what happened. Sorry for the recent
silence, we have all been shell-shocked by the whole thing and at a loss to
know what to do to try to recover the situation.

We know that a lot of you out there were very angry and upset by the
non-event and we apologise. At the same time we feel that we did
everything by the letter of the law and that we were very badly treated by
the authorities.
After much time, much consideration and time seeking advice from various
sources we have decided to pursue a case against the authorities for the
part in closing down our event. We are appealing to all members, guests and
artists and beyond to email us your accounts and experience and the impact
this had on your weekend. Please email direct to:
info@liquidconnective.org

To give you a full run-down of the events of the weekend:

According to the Health and Safety Executive Events Management Handbook, a
private party does not require a public entertainment licence - and there
is no requirement to inform local authorities of the event. As the party
was a members only event on private land, our event qualified under all the
rules of private parties, we were therefore exempt from having the public
entertainments license.

However, because this was such a large scale festival, we followed all the
requirements in the Handbook for public events. We prepared a risk
assessment report, had licensed security, fire points, first aid etc etc
the list goes on…

We arrived on site a couple of days before the party to start setting up
and, given the volume of vehicles going through a small village the local
constabulary was soon aware of our presence. We were visited by the local
sergeant and co-operated fully. He telephoned our police liaison person who
arranged to meet him and other relevant authorities on site the next
morning to allay any fears they might have.

This meeting took place on Friday morning, between our organisers
and the police, fire brigade and health and safety. We walked the site with
them, showing them the emergency access routes, the fire points, where the
camping area would be and showed them our risk assessment plan for the
site. Health and safety were happy, as were the fire brigade. At this point
the police gave us a qualified approval and said they were happy with what
we had done and that we could continue with the production. At this stage
we continued to put the infrastructure in place which included a beautiful
healing area with tipis and geodesic domes…an acoustic stage…..various
other morrocan marquees…and of course an amazing main stage with a huge
marquee housing all the visual artists and lighting crew.

Everything was coming together, only in the last few hours before the event
was about to take place did the authorities choose their untimely change of
attitude and the local officer returned with a Section 63 (CJA 1994)
injunction requiring us all to leave the site we had legally rented by 9.00
am the following morning. Despite the fact we'd paid for the site for a
week, we were not allowed to return within seven days. They walked around
the site serving this notice on everyone there and videoing the entire
proceedings. We repeated our request to meet with the chief inspector but
this was refused.

For those of you who don't know, Section 63 is an all encompassing
little piece of justice which basically gives the authorities the right to
stop anyone doing anything they want - if more than TWO people look as if
they might be setting up for a little bit of fun then they can
stop them at once. It is an iniquity which many people protested against
when the act was going through parliament but which unfortunately
became law.

We had no option but to cancel the party for that night, by this time it
was too late for our back up plan to be implemented and we tried to find
another location at once. As you all know only too well this was to become
impossible because by now the local authorities were aware of our presence
and followed us wherever we went. Even when we relocated to Hampshire
they were onto us within minutes. The policeman there confirmed that we
had been followed since leaving our original site. At this point we would
like to apologise for the poor communication, it was impossible to change
the messages on both of the phones with updated information due to the
sheer volume of calls coming in and we were under enormous pressure knowing
that there were over a thousand people expecting a party and artists all
waiting to play at a moments notice.

We really are sorry so many of you had a trashed weekend. As you can
imagine our weekend turned into a bit of a nightmare and we were all very
broken. It destroyed months of preparation and anticipation and all of our
finances. We are thousands and thousands of pounds out of pocket.
because of all the upfront costs of a festival that didn’t take place…. It
was a complete nightmare and, as far as we are concerned, the actions taken
by the authorities - completely wrong.

We are seeking compensation from the police for wrongful enactment of
Section 63, we had rented the land and had a contract this makes us agents
of the land owner and as such we are exempt from section 63(10) of the CJA
1994 and, as such, we cannot be ordered to leave the land. We have explored
all avenues in the conflict between this event being legal and illegal and
feel we have a case to follow. Although we are uncertain of what we might
find, we feel sure this is the right thing to do.

Anyway we hope this goes a little further to explaining what actually
happened. We tried to put on something really amazing .The loss of the
event was shattering for all of us, and the aftermath has been equally as
difficult with many attacks and accusations, we are deeply saddened by this
response. We urge all to speak out and communicate with us if you still
have strong issues. Despite the negative, we are equally inspired by the
positive feedback and support and will remain on our true path - onwards
and upwards.

Much Love

Liquid Connective

parking is dodgy as hell - find a road with lots of streetlights and leave nothing in the car (especially not on show).

the rex isn't too hard to find once you get into the one-way system in stratford ( the green loop.

Damn! You want to point that out to me next time?!

It was a very good night. Really cool to see so many lovely, smiling people. I was trying to think up the proper collective nouns for everyone there: a plait of poi spinners (as suggested on rec.juggling), a pile of jugglers and a faggot of staff spinners?

Dom - it was so funny. You were spinning and these two girls were stood watching you for ages, you could tell they were like " how the hell is he doing that " (I know that look as I've done it when watching you many a time ). You then stopped and moved away a little bit and they blatantly turned around and carried on watching/gawping
