Hi Folks

When is the next fire fest in the london area? Also if anyone feels like meeting up in Clapham Common some fine sunny day for someone to practice with, get in touch and we can meet up

Cheers

hi Kat,

Next fire gathering is next thursday in kensal rise, but it looks like the days of that fine squat are numbered.

Theres quite a lot of us based near clapham common nowadays.

There was talk this week that we should organise a Poi in the park London once a month throught the summer. Clapham common seems like a bloody good place to have it. what do ya think.
should it be friday, saturday or sunday night???

I was wondering as a good setting about the peace pergoda in battersea park, but took a look (i needed ia bit of calm in that place this week) and mr and mrs balfour and betty have closed it with their diggers. at the moment. (what would budda have to say about that) Plus i don't know is battersea park is open at night?? (anyone know?)

PIP london, whats the verdict???

Just winding up to go clubbing with my poi

As I live next to the Battersea end of Clapham Common I have to hearty second the notion for a PIP in Clapham Common. However, being a wuss the nights are going to have to get a bit warmer than it is now!

The common is also a great place to spin during the day, although you have to fight the kite flyers for space. Anyone got an Indonesian fighting kite handy? Used to love watching those things when I was a kid.

Commoners, gather together, and set things alight!

I'm getting very tempted to start visiting London to spin with anyone I can meet there. Once I actually get round to it, a Friday or Saturday night would be much better than a Sunday, purely because I have to get up for work on Monday.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Saturday sounds like the best option- I have to second the wait for warmer nights suggestion as I am also a wuss, I just wanted to sound out who was eager to possibly meet up. When do the nights get warmer around here. I was thinking that perhaps we could meet up after the May bank holiday weekend. Not sure what regulations there are to using fire in the parks over here. I never had any problem in using fire in the parks in Japan, but London is a different story. Would be nice to have a little fire to stave off the chilly nights! Haven't spun fire since New Years and am suffering withdrawal symptoms.

So anyone who is one for meeting in Clapham Common in May say Aye and we can set a tentative date that we can meet.

Till then, take it easy

Dont forget to bring a towel

Aye

sort of anyway. I'm not going to be able to use my left wrist until the end of may, and even then, it's going to be pretty weak since I've not been able to use it since the beginning of January.
If I get enough practice spinning my staff with my right hand, I'll come along.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Dunno if I should post this so soon, seeming as we only talked about it tonight, but Glass and I talked about he and I finding out, and talking to, the relevant 'authorities' to see if we can do PIP with their permission (so the police etc... are aware and cool with what's happening and don't freak out and shut anything down if there's fire at night). Is this a good idea or is it more fun to just get down there and play?
Until then a daytime weekend spin would be great! Who's up for this Saturday if it's nice?

Sounds peachy - getting Police approval (and maybe local council?) or at least letting them know sounds a good idea as if there are several people coming to London especially it'd be a shame to send them all home without having a burn...

But yeah - I'm up for this weekend. I'll get to put even more faces to names... yay

Okay, so are we talking about organising for this weekend?

I've had a look at the long-range weather forecast and it says that Saturday will be max 13 min 4 with scattered showers (10% chance of precipitation)...so that doesn't really work.

Sunday is slightly better, with max 14 min 4 and partly cloudy (0% chance of precipitation)...but it's a Sunday and a school night for most of us...

Check it out if you want: weather.co.uk - a pretty good weather site...

I reckon we should plan a big event for 18 May as well. My general ideas on the subject are that it will have warmed up a little by then! We should start in the afternoon, picnic style, then we can sit around, chat, catch up, play and even inspire some local children, or who ever. Take it through to the evening when those of us who are still sober (or deemed sober enough with appropriate straight-line-walking tests! ) will be able to give it some on fire.

What does everyone else think?

I'm all on for getting the support of the council / police behind us as bad vibes from the law don't make for fun nights.

18th of May sounds good as that would give us time to contact police / council etc. Does anybody live in Clapham and want to volunteer to check out possibilities? If no-one available I will see what I can do, although I live in Tooting, just thought Common was great place to spin and relatively nearby.

Thanks for welcome back Cassandra, since leaving Japan and flogging my poota I don't get much time to check hop site. Will be nice to finally meet you.

Talk to you folks soon

Otherwise - yay! Cass will be there too - I apologise in advance for getting drunk and talking very bad French to you (Always happens, not sure why) but it's my way of keeping my French (mildly) fluent.

Right then, if everyone's finished flogging things...

Cool news that you will be able to join us Cass!

So, we *absolutely* need:
Portable music system
Lots of parafin, a fire blanket, etc. etc.
Permission from official type people

Anyone care to help out on these things?

Otherwise, I can think of lots of other things to bring along like blankets, food, booze, etc. etc., but I guess we can let individuals bring what they will bring? On a more organised approach, does anyone (a) fancy running a tea/coffee/beer/snacks type stand and (b) have the facilities to do it? Could be cool and could be profitable...does anyone know anyone who could provide this??

I will see what we can scrounge on Tuesday at Poi session in Viaduct...

Does anyone feel like designing fliers? Dom? I can print loads in black and white...but not in colour unfortunately.

Should speak to Sheffield PiP people to see if they have any ideas on how to run such a thing and if they wants to come along. I will call Orange later.

We should make this a monthly thing in London if we can...[Edited to add this bit in.]

Cheers for now,
C

especially for Dave:
I was going to phone authoritiesd to check clearance ok. But dave said last night that he would be happy to go vist them in person. Probably get a better result. I'm a tad busy bee at the moment. so nice one dave, well volenteered.

Had a look for useful signs as I cycled home
The park is the run by Lambeth concil, there number according to the sign is 020 7926 6108.
(but i dont believe in signs, especially when they're put there by the council.

London Fire Brigade
main switchboard: 020 7587 2000
There is a fire station about 200m north of the east end of the common.

Clapham Met police department
51 union grove
0207 498 1212

Carrey, tea stall, crickey what are you planning here, you're in work mode. I was imagining a big but nice pic-nik in the park. I'll bring my snow leopard, fresh bread, humous, apples. Anyone want to bring a little camping stove, I'll make them a hot chocolate with bailey.

I might be able to talk michal in to bringing her portable CD player if no one else has one. but music might be the thing they really object to.(who are THEY, the THEY are the people that object) we could really do with a nice drumming session.

Carrey, I'm watching you, no more gratuitous PDA's remember. or else
I'm still flogging dead horses

PDA's rock! (Oh, you don't mean little computers do you? )

I can see you glass!

So, okay, 18th May in Clapham Common is more of a BYO deal...cool...I'm thinking about making up some tasty sandwiches to bring along in that case. Someone else could bring a bunch of crisps. Someone else some cakes. Someone else some biscuits...it could be good.

Spacemonkey suggested that we gather close enough to one of the pubs so that getting drinks wouldn't be too hard. They serve drinks in plastic cups throughout the Summer or something, so that sounds about perfect. At least we won't have to lug a lot of drinks around. And potentially, we have some audiences and/or people to teach stuff to, so that could be cool as well.

On the coffee/tea issue. It could be good to have a camping stove and a bunch of tea/coffee type stuff. I wouldn't mind bringing that sort of thing along. I'll talk to you about that closer to the time glass...since I don't have a camping stove. Baileys with a little bit of hot chocolate is a marvellous idea! I'll talk to some of the usual suspects at the Viaduct this evening too.

I have a suitable blanket or two as well, so I'll bring those along.

In all this I'm sure I can manage a four litre bottle of paraffin too! But we will need more than that!

Can anyone think of anything else we will need?

What happens if it rains??

Cheers

God, disappear for a couple of days and everything gets organsied. Cool! Lets all converse tonight.

18th May - I was going to suggest this as an excellent choice of night. Then those of us heading off to the countryside for the liquid connective birthday bash can all head off after a good burn. No clash at all. It won't rain, it can't. If it does we'll retire to the pub. Flyers I can try and do.

Places to spin - near the Windmill pub (halfway down between clapham common and south tube stations). However being near pissed people with fire is a bit dangerous - so have to keep an eye out for random people walking into us.

Permission will hopefully be fine. Thanks for checking it out Dave. They're against bonfires, but controlled flames should be ok. When I spoke to the police in a Royal park they said that royal parks are a definite no-no, but commons should be ok to spin on.

Maybe after that we try to casually arrange something every couple of weeks?

Probably see some of you guys later.

Definitely up for arranging something every few weeks, but it's probably more likely to happen once a month. I'm quite happy to be involved in the monthly org...is anyone else?

Dom - What's this other party you're going to on the 18th? Would I be interested?

On the Common near Windmill Pub was suggested, and we could be comfortably far away not to hurt other drunk people - it's more so that those who want beer can get to it easily. Maybe we could set up a "fire circle" so that it's clear to people that they shouldn't go in there - could be good for potential kiddies around the place as well!

Plus, what are the toilet facilities like around there? Are we able to use the pub's? Do they have public toilet facillities? Does anyone know?

What time are we thinking of kicking this off? I was up for some sunshine that day, if anyone wants to be there as early as 13h00 - 14h00 - but that part would be more played by ear, with the help of a long-range weather forecast!

Cheerio!

Sounds a lot more organised than PIP to me. I haven't seen a single sandwich at PIP. I think PK is neglecting us.

I'm coming Cass, and my lovely new girlfriend says she is coming too. So that's good.

Don't think I'll be bringing anything culinary though. How about if I bring a bizarre sense of humour and an unusual outlook on life?
