I was always scared with my mother's obsession with the good scissors. It made me wonder if there were evil scissors lurking in the house somewhere.

oooh. all of our snow melted. but i think we're supposed to get more sunday. not that i'm actually wanting more snow, mind you, but spinning it will be cool.

i just bought black and white film so i can go photograph the snow. i particularly want to take pictures of the graveyard all buried in snow. i love my cameras biggrin my dad is a photographer so i got to learn a lot from him. i want to learn some more trick photography too, as well as this one style which i'm completely forgetting the name of at the moment. grr, it's right there on the tip of my brain too mad and i can't wait till my friend comes to visit me with his digital video camera in tow. he's gonna film me spinning in the snow, hopefully at the graveyard (if i can get permission). if i get to, it's definately gonna be my entry for COL5 biggrin

the one spin (well, two) I really wish I had on video tape was when I was in a small village in the middle of nowhere, west africa. It was two days hard travel from the nearest airport, and literally no vehicles go there. Anyway, I spun fire for them, and what I would of wanted on tape was not my spin, but their reaction. They were like WTF is that?!?!? And then they were dead silent. even the drummers quit drumming. When I finished, like half the village was standing there (several hundred of them crowded all around) all stif and wide-eyed, and they were really starting to make me nervous. I was wondering if I violated some sort of local custom. Even my peace corps friend, who had lived with these people for like a year already, was wondering what the hell was up. One of the village elders came up and asked (in pidgeon French) if I was doing "gri-gri", which is like voodoo, but not necissarily evil - just magic I guess - like rain dances and spirit dances. When I told them it was just for entertainment, he anounced that in the local language (Dendi), and then everyone suddenly burst out laughing and they all crowded in and wanted to shake my hand and touch the poi (which were still hot since they were a makeshift wire cage poi that I had made from local materials).

I spun again for them later and everyone ran out of their huts and was screaming and jumping up and down and dancing and making the biggest uproar I had ever heard a poi watching crowd make. totally the opposite of the first time's dead silence.

like I said, wish I had a video of both.

Here is a pic of me chillin with some kids in the village.

I was a huge hit with the kids because of the fire and juggling for them and my stupid human tricks and introducing them to the game where you spin a kid around off the ground by his/her arms (I'm sure their parents are still cursing me for showing them that!). Plus, it was the first time they had ever seen a man cook or clean. people would go way out of their way to watch me sweep out my friends hut. And listening to and trying to catch a peek at the white people having sex was clearly the single biggest event of the season. The kids were always just outside causing a rruckus whenever things got romantic, and even the old ladies were making jokes about it!

How did I get started on this?

That would be one worthy of COL5.

I wonder if I should talk to the folks I spun with at the ball here in Houston about putting our performance on COL5. Four person choreographed...was MUCH fun....and apparently kicked ass, according to the DFT's who came to see.

I'm sorry I had to miss it, m'dear. Grarh, how I hate take-home finals. But I like the subject material, mental disability law. In theory. In realty, the stupid Supreme Court denied cert on my pet case, Singleton v. Norris. In that case, there was a fellow on death row who went mad. He was no longer competent to be executed, because in this country we don't execute the mentally ill. So, they wanted to give him meds to make him sane so that they could kill him. He said no. (He wasn't that crazy.) The issue came down to whether the meds were in his best medical interest. The state argued that, yes, the meds were in his best medical interest, because they dealt with his mental health issues. He argued that, no, the meds were not in his best medical interest, because if they made him sane he was going to be executed.

The state won. And the Supremes denied cert. mad

...sorry. I'm going slightly insane. ::sings 'it's my thread, I can rant if I want to'::

If you ask me, going insane on death row is a little late. if you want to get out of the death penalty, you should go insane before you commit the crime (or at least before the trial)
