Lars Bruheim AKA Lev the Lion here.

I'm a firedance philosopher, I do digital editing and all around self improvement. I'm a first year spinner and I've pegged myself as a conceptualizer and graphic visualizer, so I'm starting to do sketches of the patterns splayed out on paper, which when I showed some of them to Alien Jon while he was teaching me, suggested HomeOfPoi.

I'm 20 (Leo/Fire/Sun/Dragon), grew up in Vic and am now living in Van.
(BC/Canada)

I practice poi with wool socks with silicone stress balls in them for extremely new moves and usually use glowpoi/colecord/swivels/custom handles to work on moves ones I've broken them in, and metal poi once I've mastered them.

I spin to Shiva Shidapu and Ekoplex but I'd appreciate some input for what you guys like.

Marmite, Vegemite, or Nutella?

Hiya, welcome to HoP!

I'm curious what you mean by 'metal poi'.. are we talking like morningstars here?
Sounds a bit hardcore anyway wink

A friend of mine, Kyle Tay, uses metal rings to create specific chain mail weights meant to diffuse and deflect energy when it hits the body, so they have the look and feel of actual metal weights but do not do the body any harm.

We've been working on designs for about 5 months now and have 5 prototypes, 3 are working models available that have unique weights, deflection types and balances, tethers and metals for each.

I suppose calling them "shiny" is not too far off?

And welcome!

Our lightest model is made of Aluminum.
With the aluminum weights/chains after spinning for a while uses the constant air flow to oxidize, but I haven't spun metal (for several hours) since I started using my sock/glow combo to hit the waves of new waters.
What aluminum oxide is, is a black sooty material that forms on the aluminum, making them look a little more matte but it's pretty much invisible and looks like the lighting on them has changed.
What I know about it, is that aluminum oxide is an industrial abrasive and that it stains your hands if you hold the metal bits long enough for them to rub against your skin after spinning, but it also slowly comes off into whatever you carry it in so any aluminum-based poi will eventually polish themselves in any cloth material that has enough room for them to rub. [Black/Removable handles would be a good idea.]

The other weights (after discovering aluminum oxide buildup are all made of steel, varied with Spring Steel, Stainless Steel and Galvanized Steel.
These weight vary from 200g-550g, the latter being very heavy but not unwieldy.

Just a heads up, these are the projects I've been currently working on:

Tandem throw: Poi technique of switching poi on the fly (Practicing with David Yates and others)

Throw breakdown: Technique to poi throwing, the factors involved, what you can do with it, and how to modify poi to better do what you want considering all of these factors (there are a lot of them).

A cross between club, poi and firesword. This is probably the most ridiculous project I've ever worked on, but it's looking like it will work out. (4 fireswords, poi style, handle is club which has a firesword on it, the club emulates the handle.

Mind you it might take a while, prices for research and materials to play around with exceed my funds right now many fold, so to buy bulk, custom construction and deconstruction again and again by budget will take time no matter how you look at it.

Also, thanks again for the shpongle, it's lovely music.

Haha alright, I'll be sure to refine them and post them up.
A lot of them are, well they are overlapping each other so some look like big messes of knots but are really just 2-5 different examples of patterns overlaying each other when explaining things to other people on paper.

Just for a really simple really quick tip to you guys out there, does anyone know the trick with dying your tether at the 1/2 poi length mark to hit isolations better?
Here's sorta the same idea, weigh your poi weight and tether to calculate the weight balance ratio (or do a neutral point throw and guess) to find the exact balance center of the poi.
For instance, my simple sockpoi with silicone orbs in them:
80g silicone orb, 15g sock, and seeing as the poi is in the sock that further tilts the balance towards the weight, making the balance point roughly 4/5 down the PL, which means that's my point of balance.

Why is this important? It's because during a poi throw that's the central point in your circle, like the middle of the PL is your central point in a basic isolation, and with that you can basically figure out how to do precision throws because you can work on getting that point to go in a straight line, arc, or a X axis neutral motion.

Well, it's a little bit of a cheat... but there are no rules =]

I'll be expanding on this, as well as how flattening your circular handling increases the pop of a throw and some more cool stuff.

Enjoy!

Second tip!
Think of throws like stalls that spin, where you catch it is basically just an altered version of a stall in the direction it's facing when you catch it.

Of course you can stall or spin 360 degrees, but try out both vertical and the horizontal stalls you are familiar with and attribute it to throws when you connect (at catch) at that angle.

Enjoy.

I've stopped working on throws for a bit after discovering a new type of movement with poi I'm really excited about seeing as it's so simple but I've never seen it done before, once I play around with it I'll get back to you.

Sorry life's gotten a bit interesting =]

Anyway, it works with something I call sky plane which is any orthodox plane which has a hand position that goes significantly higher than high reel hand position, so much so that the arm has room to cross over-top the head.

Now there's 2 types of sky reels I've found so far, both are fine and both look fluid in their own way.

First one let's call Sky Reel 1 and second one let's call Folding Sky Reel (for now anyway. I'm a big fan of consensus labeling... well as long as it ends up getting a name =]).

Sky reel 1 is non-symmetrical as there's not enough room for both hands to do it at the same, but there is room to do it split-time.

Folding sky reel can be done symmetrically. As it has the same hand position as angel wings AKA [FW/BTH] butterfly alternations.

I'll expand on this later, putting walls on a move only tend to leave rubble when you break them down in the 30 mins of experimentation after... I'll try and get a video up though. <3

Edit-
Alien Jon sent me this video, at about 0:20 he does something like the move I think, it's hard to tell.

So they are just reels done above the head?

Thanks Regal =]

Kind of, you can use Skyreel 1 like that, where as skyreel folding is kind of like angelwings but instead of wallplane butterfly alternations you can do cross swing inversions or go straight from normal swing sametime to crosshands hands by doing a 180 while the poi swing over your head (haven't gotten this one "really working" yet).
