I am new and i have just found this forum, i used to be a hard house dancer and i really enjoy doing poi but i am only limited to a few moves. I haven't really found anyone who is able to help me progress. So any help would be greatfully appraited!
The one that i am really stuck on is Butterfly in one hand?
I can get is going for a while and then it just dies on me?
Am i doing something wrong?

helloo welcome

there are quite a few spinny people in plymouth, if you pop down to the events/meet others section I excpect you will be able to find some people to help you.

The lessons on this site are great for learning as are:
www.domorepoi.com
www.motsplace.com

Are you using sock poi or tailed poi? The one handed butterfly is lots easier with socks.

i am using poi with tails!

They have bean bags in them!

From mightybanana.com

WOW that second site is great i will be looking at that one a bit more. The site will also help me with the names of the moves.

I wasn't sure what the weave was but now that i have seen it, i know that i have that one down already! biggrin

tails are good because they look pretty but for learning you are better off using an pair of long socks (you know, the stripey over-knee ones) with a juggling ball or bean bag in the end.

It makes learning new moves a gazillion times easier and once you've got it with socks then you can transfer what you've learnt over to tailed poi or chains or whatever poi you fancy!

...ooh and don't forget to have fun and dance!

The key with one handed butterfly is in the wrist. A firm yet small up and down motion should keep the spin going for longer.

once youve mastered that try doing it overhead.

You'll find me on the dance floor

I have already been able to take it over my head but only with two hands and not one!!!!
I get scared, that is where i go wrong, i think?
I see what you are saying though, so just and gentle up and down movement with the wrist cool

Hi ya,

Only found out the other day but there is a meet in beaumont park (just of ebrington street) in plymouth on Wednesday nights, I think Brian mentioned something about beer \ bbq or something along those lines on fridays from 4 onwards as well.

Oh and with sets of poi check out www.poipoi.info they also have a tutorial section and glow stuff but the ones you look at and think I want them they can't get yet...

bye
