hey there poisters and twirlers,
i'm not a regular poster on here, but am in a bit of a pickle and was hoping some creative minds may be able to throw some ideas at me - maybe i'm not thinking about the most obvious answer to the problem:
a fellow twirler and i had a plan to road-trip up to brisbane (from sydney) for this weekend's moonfest (26/5), thought it'd be special being the lunar eclipse and all...problem is, the car that was going to take us has blown a gasket (expensive and timely to fix). we had decided to drive as it was the cheapest option for the pair of us, and after looking at car hire, i'm getting pretty disgruntled with being 21, as most places require you to be at least 25 to hire. (this seems to be a sydney thing, as i've hired a car north of the border being 21 before.) i've also looked at flying, trains and buses, but they're all pretty much out of the price-range and totally defeat the idea of going on a road trip...

i'm starting to think maybe the best option is staying in sydney, but i was mighty eager to get out and twirl the night of the eclipse...
any ideas as to what i should do?

You guys have the 25 rule, too? I thought it was just an American thing.

Well, you've looked at planes, trains, busses, and autos and I'm guessing ships are out of the question. I'm stumped. There's not a car you can borrow around?

Peace and good luck!

thnx 4 the suggestion mike,

well, there is always the option of asking the parents for the car, but they're not all that keen on the idea of travelling for 13hrs just to fire-twirl under a lunar eclipse....i can't imagine anything better myself, but they're not entirely supportive of the cause, so i don't like my chances of borrowing their cars.
(although i will go for a final plea bargining tomorrow...i suppose i have nothing to lose by asking.)

i guess the next option may be to try and get some sydney twirlers together somewhere...surely other people would be prepared to brave the cold for the chance of a glipse of the eclipse...i hope. i wonder whats involved in trying to organise a gathering (i.e. telling the council about it?) (this seems a little selfish...trying to organise a gathering, based on the fact that i want to twirl the night of the eclipse)
hmm....

I know that in New Zealand the locals always pick up hitch hikers that are doing 2 things

1) walking anyway
2) Have their destination written on their back on a white t-shirt.

This way people don't feel under pressure to pick you up and they appreciate that you're making the effort, even if it is from Sydney to Brisbane!

Hope this helps mate, can't think of anything else.

thanks for the suggestions guys
but we've decided that this weekend's adventure is not to be - and we'll make the trek when the car in question is ready for action. (maybe next month or july, way too many odds up against us at the moment.) thinking about going for a local twirl instead, somewhere with little clouds and lotsa space to twirl and watch the eclipse! any other moon lovin' sydneyites interested, let me know!

you can actually get the bus for $56 from sydney to brisbane.
then, i guess the only other problem is getting to sandgate..

this is the absolute cheapest option (apart from car) for travel between the 2 cities.
i can't remember the coach name, but it's not hard to find out. the sydney central station info desk can tell you. could be called premier, or something like that.

only other option i know is to post ads on hostel boards, seeing if anyone is travelling to bris on the date u want

Well if the Bus goes to Roma St Bus/Rail station,(which I would think it would) it's really easy to jump on a train to Shorncliffe (Shorncliffe train is on platform 9 if that's helpful )

But I really think you guys need that magickal flying bus with invisible wings with the UV room and everything that Malcolm was talking about! That thing would rock!

WOW! Talk about inspirational! I had no idea there'd be so many other adventure itchy ppl out there! *hugz 2 every1!*

Well, I'm thinking it'll either be on for young and old either june, july or august for us...i know, we picked a good time - right in time for winter, but brisbane cold would probably not be that cold for a sydneyer or melbournite would it? i can't see any excuse for us not to migrate north for the winter!

So start checking those calendars guys - tues 25/6? wed 24/7? fri 23/8?
Am definately up for a firey-convoy of road-trippers this winter!!

rozi - still not sure where we wanna head sunday night...this weather isn't exactly supporting the cause either

will do rozi,
a friend and i went for a twirl once when it was drizzling, just a very fine fine mist in the air, and it was wonderful! the fire kept us warm, but the drizzle kept us cool. we also had an audience, who must have thought us quite mad, twirling in the rain...only problem came when the lighter got wet and we couldn't light up anymore

Remember those yellow plastic raincoats & hats that your parents used to dress you up in as a kid? I have this weird mental image of twirling in that (& a great big pair of wellington boots ).
