Increasingly as time goes by I am becoming more and more worried about the standard of some fire performing products on the market and even non fire products, it is mainly at festivals I see these items being sold but some websites too.
My main concern with the fire products is safety where as the concern with other non fire products would be the quality and likeliness of them surviving any amount of time.

Speaking about poi, at festivals they generally seem to be overpriced for the quality of the product, fire poi especially and if you add in to the equation that they might be harmful to users and others then it doesn’t paint a pretty picture.
The things I’m talking about are small (in my opinion) inadequate clips that could either come off or break, normal link chain (nothing wrong with it but I would think it would be cheaper than ball chain, although don’t hold me to that), cheap handles, extremely flimsy heads sometimes without Kevlar (by which I mean with some other cheap wick that is unsuitable for fire spinning e.g gives off fumes after being put out, that really stinks nasty) and all of this for the same price as you would expect to pay for a quality pair.

Non fire props:
Ok so tying a bit of string to a loop of material and sewing to a bean bag and incasing it in material is fine for a set of poi but is it fine for £18? Would it really cost anywhere near that to produce them or are the people who make them just trying to make money?
Or buying one of these and selling them as a pair for £10, that’s insane and probably one of the most extreme cases I’ve seen.

It seems as though the majority of people selling these items are just out for a “quick buck” and it makes me angry to think there might be someone who doesn’t know the going rate for poi and buys one of these products, or that people could be hurt or more probably just disappointed because their new toy has broken.

I was going to write a whole page of things but as I wrote this i more and more couldn’t think of what to say and the fuel of my rant ran out and I feel slightly calmer now, but I know if I start thinking about it again or go to a festival sometime soon then I’ll probably go off on one again.

So here’s my question (yes a rant and a question all in one thread):
Are my worries valid? Or am I just getting caught up in it all and it isn’t really a problem (except in the case of breakable clips to hold a head on that aren’t fire proof and come flying off sending a fireball into space…or people) but instead my standards are high? ubbrollsmile

Thanks.

p.s in no way am I saying that HOPs products are bad because they are really good smile

p.p.s I seem to remember a thread about having standards in poi equipment which would be good but impossible to police, or perhaps educating people in how important the safety aspect of fire equipment is, therefore (hopefully) they would naturally make anything to a standard that is both fair in price and safe…

I don't think your fears are unfounded at all, for example lets take the over priced poi(non fire), the most likely product for a first time spinner.

A person sees people spinning at a festival, loves what they see, and is duped into buying a cheap pair of crappy poi at an extreme price. They go and mess about for a while, and shortly afterwards disaster strikes! The poi breaks, someone may get slightly injured - but the most damage could be done to this persons view of the spinning community. And may not have the confidence in 'us' to buy another pair of reasonably priced poi. So a would be spinner is scared off for good, because a nasty person wants to make a quick buck.

Tragic!

To me this is worse than somebody buying shoddy fire poi, if they are good/confident enough to buy fire poi then they should atleast do their research - or know enough spinners to be able to get some advice. Equally a first timer buying fire poi is just being silly - so I have limited sympathy for them..

i know what you mean, however i've seen people (even children) who are relatively new and see everyone around them doing fire and think its safe or ok, and want to do the same, iether they think they know enough or they simply don't think, and the people selling the equipment just for money will sell to those people, possibly because they are the only ones who will buy it.

one other question to everyone really:

why are quicklinks so expensive? is it because they have been pecially heat treated? or are they baught in smaller numbers than the hardeware store i've seen them in, although in one shop it was £7 for two...

This actually made me laugh.. sorry..

I've told quite a few people who want to start spinning to just get a pair of socks and a tennis ball/handful of sand to start off with- but people often say no, they want a 'real' set.. There are so many things like that, people assume bought things are automatically superior to anything you could make yourself.. *shrug*

Incidently, my first set of fire poi had some incredibly flimsy clips- I think I'd burnt them twice before the head flew off while I was practicing.. Is definitely an issue..

THE MEEK WILL INHERIT THE EARTH!

If that's okay with you?

But socks and weighty juggling balls = the best starter poi I think.. and I'd prolly go as far as to say I prefure them to most 'real' poi - tho alot of people need to learn that just buying a set of ready made poi doesnt make them any more real...

i think the best beginner poi is a pair of shopping bags with an apple in each, not only are they cheap and easy to get hold of but are more versatile as they can double up a your lunch, although apples may hurt on impact, maybe kiwi's.

I actually don't like socks as they are too stretchy which makes them much less easy to do interesting things like stalls and wraps with.

Gee and i just ate my last kewi, right after i got home with my new socks and tennis balls.... Perhaps at one of these festivals you were talking about someone should just sell socks and tennis balls.... and make a fast buck.... just saying...

Hooray for the tried and true method of tennis balls in socks! As for overpriced crappy products, the same is true in many other lines of service or products. For example, I see bottled water as the ultimate rip-off.

As for dangerous products like fire poi, whenever I twirl fire and someone gets wowed I make sure that they know it's through a lot of pain, effort and time invested to get to the level of fire. If that makes any sense.

Kupo!

Very much so, it's not the toy that makes the performance its the spinniner.
