Enrolled to vote? (Australians?)

As you may or may not know the election was called over the weekend.

Due to changes in the enrolment process if you want to vote now only have until 8pm Wednesday to do so.

So if you want to vote get in quick and enrol, don’t for get to remind your friends too.

lots'o'love,

Blue

Ps. Here is a funny video about the subject.

I enrolled as soon as I heard he changed the laws.

I hate howard, he's so mean to us uni students. Hopefully the conservative section of the population will realise that he's not doing well and finally kick him out of office.

I'm all against the new laws for enrolling...but really, why do you need to wait until the election is called? Why don't you just do it as soon as you turn 18?

Yeah i think it is silly that people don't enroll straight away, but i suppose it is one of those things that is easy to put off and put off the suddenly boom it is election time.

I actually enrolled to vote when i was 16 as part of a legal studies class, i think a lot of people don't realize that you can actually enroll before you are 18 you just can't vote.

Maybe enrollment should be part of the drivers liscence L plate process (assuming anyone actually gets liscence at 18). Then a letter sent at 18.
If you are 16 and a bit its not long till 18. (inane comment)

Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

Out of curiosity, what happens if you're not enrolled to vote? If you are, and don't vote, you get a fine, so can you circumvent this by not enrolling in the first place?

There was a bloke on the newswho refuses to vote, and every time he comes up with a more outlandish excuse to see what he can get away with, last time he couldn't vote because "I had my head stuck to the fridge all day"

There is a slight possibility that I am not actually right all of the time.

You still get fined.

I think you can get away with it for longer but it's still a fine when they catch on.

My grandmother used to not want to vote, so she'd rock up at the booths, get her name marked off and then put empty paper in the boxes. Simple enough. There are enough voting places around that if you don't want to vote, it's easy not to without the fine.

On saying that, this year I'm going to have to vote early cos on the day of the election I have a rowing regatta which will occupy my entire day. And I'm not happy about it because last time I voted early they lost my details and sent me a letter telling me they'd fine me!! eek

Gnor that is a good idea, offering enrollment while getting your licence that way people would not have to line up at the shop front for a second time.

They have actually started offering enrolment forms and explaing how to enrol in highschools but there seems to be a gap around the 20 to 25 year olds beacuse it was not started when they were in high school and they have not been hounded to enrol yet.

Although you can get a fine for not enroling it must be pretty easy to avoid beacuse a friend of my who is 26 was untill recently un enrolled.

Rouge i had to do an early vote for the last state election too, it was not too dificulte but luckly there was we were able to go to one of the early polling booths rather than haveing to postal vote.

I actually applied for a postal vote form but it took over 2 weeks to arrive! I was running out of time to vote before I left for Japan so I just voted early (my postal vote form ended up arriving 2 days before I left!). Even though I'm not restricted by leaving the country this time, I still don't want to push my luck with the postal!

Yeah most of the time it is voting for the lesser evil. Actually all i care about at the moment is making sure my vote helps return the balance in the senate, i have not decided about the rest of my vote yet.

I will be voting... for the second time! YAY

The thing I most enjoyed about last time was annoying all the campaigners right outside the booths who expect you to take their pamphlets. My mother told me to take one of everything and don't talk to them but when we got there, I found it incredibly amusing to refuse to take pamphlets.

The ALP had a teenager (not of voting age) there in a wheelchair. Who was telling me quite loudly that I was a uni student and hence I HAD to vote for ALP etc. She wouldn't let me pass without her stupid pamphlet.

So I started ranting about how I was a lesbian and her party made me feel less than human and she should be ashamed of herself and she let me pass.

The Christian party tried to force their pamphlet on me as well. I don't remember how I got passed them...

And then I went and politely asked for greens and democrats pamphlets. (I think this is because I have a case of tall poppy syndrome and can only vote for the underdogs... oh, and also I vote on social issues and they're the only ones who agree with me)

I hate the amount of waste for this one day... all the paper and trees, for the pamphlets and actual voting slips. I think it's terrible.

Uni elections are just as bad. Every seat of every lecture theatre has election material on it. So much paper... frown

I generally like to go to polling booths dressed up as much like a hippy as I can.

The Liberals don't touch me.
The ALP don't touch me.
The Greens think they they have me in the bag.

The other thing I like to do is tell them to "stop wasting Tassie's forests on your propaganda"

That usually gets the Liberals and the ALP to leave me alone and the Greens to feel bad.

yup absentee vote would be the way to do it. I'm not sure where you would find out the details but in most area there is a special polling booth that opens early.

Where do I vote?
It's usually pretty easy to find out where you can cast your vote on election day. Public schools and town halls are usually a good bet. If you’re not going to be in your electorate on polling day, but you will be in your home state or territory, you can cast an absentee vote, you just need to tell them when you get there.

Electors can cast an early vote in person or by post in the following two ways. A pre-poll vote is cast before election day at a pre-poll voting centre. A postal vote is cast before election day by post. These types of votes can be cast by an elector who will not be within their home State or Territory on election day, is seriously ill, infirm, unable to leave work, or for religious reasons is unable to attend a polling place.

And if you are going to be overseas, you don’t have to miss out. You register as an overseas elector to ensure your name remains on the roll.

As you may have noticed considering the shear volume of adds on TV/In newspaper/ on radio/ everywhere, the election is on this weekend, so I thought I would give this a bump.

People can also share there voting experience if they feel the need.

The important questions:

1. Did your polling booth have a cake stall? If so did you buy cake?

2. Did your polling booth have a sausage sizzle? If so did you buy one?

3. Are you having a post election party?

4. Will there be alcohol?

5. Did you see anybody famous when you went to vote?

yay! i went and voted today. the place was flat out with people going to vote early i tell you! it was all pretty cruisey though. voted green, independents, minority parties for the senate. honestly i think letting the greens take a fair chunk of the senate is the only way to restore some balance to Australian politics with liberal and labour being nearly indistinguishable. greens are the real opposition nowadays.

since it was early there was just a table with voting pamphlets that you could take if you wanted, although cause i'm not living in the electorate i'm enrolled in any more only the greens supplied a form that i could use, not that i did.

i've changed my enrolment for after the election now but i'm glad i was enrolled differently, where i am now is definatly labour but bass, where i voted for, is marginal liberal. i feel my vote counts more when its cast in a place that is marginal against the current holders, its a good feeling. smile

now my beef with the australian voting system. in tassie for the senate vote to count you had to either go along with some parties policy preferences, or you had to number 28 (TWENTY EIGHT) boxes for your vote to count. i'd assume in larger states there'd be even more numbers. personally i think this an absurd amount to number, i really dont see how giving someone a number 28/28 is any different to not giving them a number. either way its pretty obvious you dont want them to represent you. especially when only 6 out of the 28 are going to get positions, i think it would make much more sense to only have to number your top 7 or 8. having to correctly number almost 30 candidates just seems to me to increase the likelihood of making a mistake and excluding your vote from the count.
