Poje, if you search the threads using words like 'flying' or 'airplane' you will find there has been LOTS of discussion on this.
Here is [Old link].

In brief:
People travel with long things like golf clubs and fishing rods all the time. You may get sent to a 'oversize luggage' section. No big deal.
If a staff has been used with eg kero, then it's a no brainer to make sure gear doesn't stink. Wash (with detergent) and dry in sun or with a hair dryer if you are in a miserable climate.
Put in bag eg fishing bag or specially made bag (that also should not stink) Wrap in a black plastic bag and tape it up if that's all you can do.
Check in with other luggage. If asked, it is juggling equipment. There is NOTHING on a washed wick that is explosive or what they are looking for. I have personally seen quantities of gear be checked with explosive residue wands and pass with no problem. I have also seen stinky stuff refused because it is stinky, which implies to the staff that their may be active fuel there. And which implies to me that the travellers had temporarily lost their common sense re current paranoias due to having taken gear on planes with no problems for so many years.

Personally travel with poi so the problem doesn't exist. My son and other friends perform professionally and travel internationally with bags of staff frequently. I accept that the USA may be stricter. It is still true however that nothing in a washed staff is explosive or dangerous. Quite the opposite, kevlar and metal are not even flammable, let alone explosive.

However, a used wick can give off aromatics identical to that of some plastic explosives...

Pleased to hear it happens less than I thought, however, I would always recommend taking your wicks off and carrying spare wick with you when flying...

Certainly with Solvent 3440 and Kerosene (NZ at least) as fuels, there is a chance of this happening...
