Hello everyone and welcome to PLAY FESTIVAL 2007!!

Please forgive me for the lack of info, I have no computer to use and it'll be a few weeks more until I'm able to update it more often. I'll come back and put more up as and when I can.

Hopefully most of this info you'll have gotten from our newsletter, if not sign up to it on the website now! www.playfestival.co.uk

We had a wonderful 5 days last year and can only say that 2007 will be even better!

Thanks to everyone who came last year and who gave us feedback on what they thought of the festival, we've taken all comments on board and hope we can make the festival one that you'll enjoy even more than the last.

The dates for this years festival will be Wednesday 25th - Sunday 29th July and we will be at the same venue, Fordhall Farm in Market Drayton, Shropshire. The tickets will be £35 in advance and £40 on the door, that will include most workshops, 4 nights camping, the shows and other entertainments during the festival

We have lots planned for this years festival, more areas to play in with the emphasis on getting everyone involved, we will have a proper go at the world record after last years attempt didn't go so well (although it does look awesome on video!!!) and of course the usual abundance of workshops to keep you all busy in the day.

We'll have two stages this year, the main stage/tent and and nice little caberet tent, a solar powered cinema, a PROPER bar & food tent and a few more folks selling the stuff you want to buy (even if you don't realise it yet! heheh)

New for this year will be the PLAY HOP Amateur Performance of the year. It's a little competition we've come up with that can be entered by anyone for any type of performance. No more than 4 minutes long with a cash prize for the winner and the chance to feature on the next PLAY DVD. As you might guess from the title the event is sponsored by HomeofPoi.com (who have proudly given us the prizes for our games over the last two years). More details will follow soon...

The DVD of last years festival will be out at some point, probably exactly at the time we plan it to come out wink Focusing more on spreading knowledge to learn the arts than the last DVD and we're sure it'll knock your socks off!

If you want to contact us about anything please email us at one of the following addresses:

info@playfestival.co.uk

comments@playfestival.co.uk

volunteers@playfestival.co.uk

traders@playfestival.co.uk

If anyone wants specific footage from last years festival please wait until after the DVD is out, Strugz & co are busy enough editing the full thing to start making cuts for people! Thanks smile

As my internet access is sporadic at best till my pc is up and running, I might not be able to reply to email straight away, if you want to talk to me about anything call me on 07814 018091 and if you don't get an answer LEAVE A VOICEMAIL!

Keep checking the website for the latest information and we'll send out newsletters as often as we can.

hugs & smiles

If per chance you are reading this, I'm the blonde one who sat next to you on the way to birmingham.
Did you get home okay?
That was ace batering with the train guard btw ubblol

Also, the smoking ban.

*parent face*

I was dissapointed to see people with CREW on their backs openly smoking in the big tent.
You of all people should be setting an example, and appriciate more than others the amount of work, time and effort that goes into running the festival.
To see all that be destroyed just because you couldnt be botherd to go outside for a spliff would be horrible.

I'm sure you all know this (but chose to ignore it anyway) just one ciggerette if caught means a £2500 fine for Dunc and the possibnility of bankrupcy, and the end of the festival for good.

Should kept quiet Miss JoJo, I didn't see you! spank hug

I hate to sound like a party pooper, but wether we like it or not this is the way things are going to be from now on.
No excuses, no 'oh its only this one'...whilst it may sound dramatic, the consequences could be disaterous.

How nice was it to be able to see the stage? And for Len to bring her kids inside the tent? And for non-smokers not to stink to high heaven like the rest of us tar inhaling cretins?

Lizzie, I don't think the bruising is from hooping. I didn't really do any hooping plus the bruising is too high up to be from that anyway. I am starting to suspect it is just from sleeping akwardly on a hardish floor for 4 nights that caused it. That and not warming up before being silly with a devilstick.

The pictures are excellent as well. Thanks for sharing.

Mech, hope the shoulder heals quickly for you as well hug

Back to work. Just got a txt from CJ saying "Work sucks, I miss Play". Couldnt have put it better myself.

Well done to all the organisers and people that kept everything running smoothly. Once again an awesome festival despite the odd downpour.

Big hugs to everyone who made my week amazing fun, you know who you are! hug hug

See you all next year!!

Tom/Motley

P.S. Aimee I have your head torch and your water carrier (again). I found your headtorch when I was leaving the main tent on Sat night but forgot I had it when I said goodbye redface, Jo had your water carrier in her tent and gave it to me. I'll give it back to you when I see you next (maybe a Clapham or something??) x

I did half try and find my head torch in a pathetically tired state on saturday night, then regreted not trying hard enough on the way back to my tent as trip over 3 guy ropes and did my knees in (again!) rolleyes ubblol
Thanks for picking it up for me hug

Well said Aimee, I was going to post something similar but you beat me to it!

I was also very disappointed to see crew smoking inside the tents but I felt I couldn't say anything to them. As a non-smoker I thought this year was amazing, I didn't come home smelling of an ashtray and I didn't end up coughing my way through the indoor show. Thankyou to all those who abided by the smoking ban and went outside, even in the rain, it was hugely appreciated, to those who didnt - booo!!! (still love you Jo hug )

Anyways, big thanks to the organisers, you guys are awesome! I have so many people to mention but I'm lazy and can't be bothered so I will thank everyone! Though special mention goes to Neon for the Nutella and MattyB for the flying saucers, you guys rock! biggrin

hug to all

Nice work guy and girls. Top notch job all round grouphug
(esp. for Mech and the website problems)

I had a truly fantastic time, and being there made me forget all about the stresses and strains of life, to which i must now return frown

How come everyone packed up so quickly? I woke up to find half the site deserted! eek

Just a few suggestions for next year:
1) More indoor seating?

2) Dont put DJs or music making people on at the same time as a main show in the evening. They end up playing to an almost empty tent, which isnt very fun nana wink (we still enjoyed playing music loudly on a good sound system and having lots of room to spin in though! So we thank you graciously for that hug biggrin )

3) I assume the main tent this year, was a smaller replacement for the one that pulled out? I personally found this years one a little small, though I did enjoy having the stage all at one end, rather than in the middle sideways on, like the previous years. bounce

4) Naughty farmers not taking their animals out of the field early enough and not letting their animals poo dry out in time for people turning up to camp!! ubblol

5) Having toilets in two places? Its a pain if you are at one end, then need the loo as you have to walk all the way to the other side of the site, then back again. I think the number of toilets was just right though, so maybe just split them up a bit? shrug

Other than that, you really all did do a fantastic job biggrin
Many, many thanks to all of you who were involved and who contributed! :lick:

You are all fantastic! hug2

1) More indoor seating?
~Yyyyyyeah....though this was compounded by the weather. Plastic seats are rubbish and will break, wooden seats are expensive and would get broken and it was pretty wet for beanbags and flumping pillows. Any suggestions though?
2) Dont put DJs or music making people on at the same time as a main show in the evening. They end up playing to an almost empty tent, which isnt very fun.
~ So many acts so little time...but yes.

3) I assume the main tent this year, was a smaller replacement for the one that pulled out? I personally found this years one a little small, though I did enjoy having the stage all at one end, rather than in the middle sideways on, like the previous years. bounce
~ No, that was always going to be the main tent, we actually lost a big horseshoe shaped tent which was to be the cinema one end, acoustic the other - which would've given us plenty of cover from rubbish weather. Next years is much bigger though

4) Naughty farmers not taking their animals out of the field early enough and not letting their animals poo dry out in time for people turning up to camp!!
~ I know, they're bad. Apparently they rang up Dunc on Sunday asking if we could just set-up on Wednesday as the animals were still in the field! Tsk tsk, dubiously legal in fact...

5) Having toilets in two places?
~ There were meant to be 2 toilet sites, but the toilet people didn't want to risk leaving one set in the middle of the field, as with all that rain they wouldn't have been able to empty them without getting stuck (In fact, on Tuesday the entire site plan was flipped and changed, hence the big maps being 50% wrong ubblol)

I'm going to put some questions out to you lot now too, just for future thoughts:

Workshops - Too many/too few? I didn't schedule any on Weds or Sun to avoid people missing too many, but on the whole every workshop was really well attended, but did it cut down on actual play time?

Fire - Distinct lack of much fire spinning as far as I could tell, also lack of campfire really (I was really surprised to see a photo of one burning - didn't think it had been lit the whole week). Was this due to the weather or is fire just passé? wink

Stalls - The traders were happy, were you? Good choice, prices etc? (I personally thought both food places were a little pricey, but then it was also very good...)

Shows/Bands - Not enough live music / too much? Same for the shows (including PHAPPY - Play & HoP Amateur Performance of the Year for whoever asked what it stood for wink )

I was happy with the workshops I went to, they left plenty of time for relaxing and playing which was important (this is my first holiday in years). But then again I don't do staff which seemed to dominate.

I'm too new to be comfortable with fire. The one night I felt I may try I decided not to as my arms were hurting (bad Alex - warm up and stretch next time...)

It was good actually speaking to the traders I normally take pot luck on the internet... now I know what to look for a lot better thanks to conversations held over the week.

Foodwise - I know one person was mentioning the lack of choice us meat eaters had, but I can't really see people choosing Cottage Pie or Chicken in Bacon over a burger or a sausageinnabun at a festival... Some Baked Potato goodness might be an idea though.

For what it's worth I really enjoyed Smokey censored (errr... Smokey Illegitimate Child 8-) I tended to stick to the main shows, although wish I had tried the Joe Driscoll set after seeing his slot in the main show, but the description on his site doesn't call to me - Hip Hop not really my thing).

Something a bit more "official" on the Wednesday night would probably be good. Nice weather would probably lend itself to a show round a campfire or something (warning - ex scout alert).

Hey get me, commenting 8-)

i think this may have been due to the distance between the camp and the fire areas and im not sure that most ppl knew where the fire was (we had to search)

as for the stalls, they were fantastic and not too pricey

i think there was a good selection of music and joe driscoll blew my mind lol

i think workshops were worked in wonderfully well smile

well done to the guys you did an awesome job, Play was amazing can't wait till next year to see the dvd lmao

PLAY2007 was incredible! I miss you all so much already. I'm gonna miss all the free hugs.. I spent about an hour before we left finding and hugging people I've met.

I met so many new people, all were really lovely, though i didn't get to spend time and chat with all of them. (anyone i've met (or haven't) feel free to add me on msn: asaf07@msn.com)

massive thanks to dunc and the rest of the PLAY crew for organizing such a great festival hug

thanks to everyone I spent most of my time with for being so nice, I love you all hug

the "I licked you you're mine" game we played was hilarious, emma owns about 64 people (including dunc, who's worth 50 points), you should all start playing it. just go around licking people the next festival you're at, and licking might become the new pegging tongue

i have a few pics which i'll upload soon.

big thanks to guy for having the hugging workshop, it was so much fun hug

huge thanks to jen for letting us stay at her place before PLAY hug

also thanks to guy and pete for giving me lifts to morrison's hug

all the shows were incredible, great work everyone. I still cant believe chimeara did their fire show during the rain, I couldnt film it because of the rain though frown.

hugs to all of the performers, keep being awesome hug

it was an awesome festival, cant wait for next year's, and i hope to see some of you at the israeli juggling convention in april.

hug

about the lack of fire spinning - either due to the weather or the distant location from everything. last year the fire spinning area was much closer to the main tent. this year me and mike spent about an hour looking for it since the sign fell off, we almost ended up fire spinning in the dog walking area.

also i liked the fact that there was more than one tent, last year i didnt have anywhere to go if i didnt like the bands or music playing at the tent. this was a great improvement.

Workshops - perfect - learn all day, chill and practise all night. cheers to everyone for that! especially fenfire, very well thought out and lots of fun (as was the show). i liked how most workshops encouraged you to think about the possibilities with a few basic moves, rather than just teaching complicated figures. you seem to come out with far more to work on that way.

Fire - didn't find the area for a few days, weather wasn't great, paraffin didn't burn. oh well, not the end of the world!

Stalls - food... yea, expensive but really tasty.

best festival bar i've ever seen! tasty drinks, reasonably priced. the poi bus was brilliant.

Shows/Bands - shows were spot on. what i heard of bands was quality. live music and spinning seemed to work really well, unique atmosphere. was good having dj's playing late to spin/sit around.

cheers to everyone, especially to those who kept me entertained and learning, and everyone who kept everything running so smoothly.

oh and to the guy who helped me juggle tea, spliff, umbrella and lighter in the rain. that was good work! josh maybe?
