Hi everyone. I've been studying martial arts since I was 9 years old. I grew up in so. cal and went to high school in Maui. I was playing in a punk band when one of the bands at a gig had a fire dancer. I couldnt get enough!!! We put on big shows in the mountains every year and always invite artists and fire groups to perform. A couple of months ago I went to a local Utah burn and saw the Mutator along with local fire artists spinning some incredible stuff. I knew I needed to do this! So I got a couple of tennis balls, tied some phone cord on and started spinning them like my bow staffs. I went through all of the lessons on the HOP pages and now I just cant put them down. I'm waiting for my set to arrive next week and I'm soooo excited I cant tell you. This feels so natural and flows with incredible smoothness unlike any martial weapon I've used. In Sept. I will be going to San Fransisco to study under Glitter Girl from the Temple of Poi.
I've been filming and imaging extreme sports for the past three years.

Ok enough introduction and ranting about me.
I'm honored to be a new member in this community and this art of poi. Any pointing in the right direction, while I'm fresh, will be appriciated. I don't want to learn bad habits from the start.

i read that a while ago, i can't really remember what it said but i think it was helpful... i haven't lit up yet either... i'm still pretty impressed with my LEDs... i might think about lighting up when i get bored with them...

I just did my first fire spin last night and I've only been spinning poi for a short while. If you can keep it going for a few mintutes without hitting yourself with your normal poi just go for it and stick to stuff you are confident with rather than try new stuff whilst on fire - lot less chance of pain
And mainly just enjoy it it feels great and sounds incredible.

I had my baptism by fire last night. My first virgin burn... and what an unbelievable experience! I'll never forget that moment as long as I live. Thanks to all for the confidence you have brought me, and the support to have the guts to do it. We were sitting around the camp fire on one of my friends little backyard beaches and I just felt it. It's time. My heart started beating fast and I knew it was time. The overpowering adrenalin rushes we're undescribable. The sound of the fire, the sand and people watching me we're all different than my practice room. It went off beautifully. My love and thanks to all !!!

So you've tried fire hmm? Have you seen the interview with Pele? If your spinning fire it might be a good thing to watch, the links pretty easy to find here I think. If you can watch that and still want to use fire then go for it. I really should show it to my brother he jus thinks fire is cool because its fire one of these days he's gonna end up getting burned because hes an idiot and a show off thats the only reason he likes fire. Allthough its more to do with fire breathing than spinning but fires fire I guess.
