psi, you suck.good day gentle people of HoP. I would like to share with you the reason for my current frustration with psi. Namely, the challenge of doom... no, sorry: dooooooooooooooOOOOooooooooom!!!
Now I don't like to use so many exclamation marks in one go, so this has really got me going crazy!
The challenge is: hyperloop throw (throwing the poi that comes from underneath), followed by a whip catch throw into a controlled catch at the end.
I can do it.
currently about 1 in every 100. This means it is not controlled. This means I am frustrated.
Anyone else up to the challenge? Go on, share my frustration. Or if you can already do it, put up a vid.... that'd really p!ss me off.

Heres some tips that may help...
- Weighted handles
- Once youre in the suicide air wrap (youre holding one poi with the other just tangled) bounce your hand up and down a little to keep the non-held poi spinning.
- A second bounce should be applied to give the un-held poi the energy needed to be released at the right spot so it can be easily caught.

- had never heard of a suicide airwrap, will have to work on that.
But it wasn't quite what i meant by the trick. The idea is to flick the poi into the air after each single rotation (i'm not trying to be pedantic, i know the principle must be the same), but the trick is to flick the poi from a hyperloop into the air, catch it again on the poi and flick it up again after one rotation into a controlled catch.
respect to everyone who can do this (durbs you always astound me, bluepussy i still think you're lying! go on proooove me wrong!
), I know its not just me being rubbish - this is HARD!It appears to me that there are 3 catches:
1) catching the poi out into a hyperloop throw - i've been making this throw by letting go of the underneath-poi almost as soon as the poi come into contact with one another.... result: underneath poi flies into air with a beautifully controlled rotation and trajectory.
2) catching the poi out of the air - I've realised that the difficulty is the timing for the second catch, you cant just take the poi out of the air whenever you want, you have to time the rotation of the other poi to get the whipcatch (or whip flick is more appropriate) in exactly the right place so the other poi can fly off keenly towards your other hand for the final catch. I've found it works well if I flick the poi from the first catch out to one side (I've been flicking the LH poi out to the RH side) to make a good contact for the second catch/flick.
3) catching the beautifully controlled whipflick back into the awaiting empty hand. And I am one with the world
any more pointers or a better way to do this?

LH hyperloop throw - catch on LH - wibble - propellor - LH hyperloop throw - whip flick - CATCH!!!

I can get about 3 out of 4 and even finish either spinning same diraction, into butterfly or from stall/into stall.
If you could've found the time this weekend to come up you'd be doing them too by the time you caught your flight home.

actually no sorry, read your post from 11:13 and it wasn't what I was thinking.
I can do it but it's really hard to control the poi direction once it'd flicked, I'll have a crack later when I'm home.
thinking about it, I'd say try to manipulate them so the poi head (of the poi that stays in your hand) is closer to the handle than the middle of the poi being flicked. Should be a little easier to do it then. But if it's too close to the handle it wont flick and if it's too far it'll be really hard to get direction.

yeah, i found its just like doing a propellor, but using the poi instead of a hand. So if you hit the "propellor point" just right you can control the poi in much the same way.
By alternating the speed of rotation/isolating slightly the poi that stays in your hand you can manipulate the speed of rotation for the poi that flicks off.
By varying where you make the contact on the poi that is released (close or far from the handle) you can control the direction in which the poi flies off - but there is only a very small area for vaiation here - too close to handle = poi flung at floor, too far from handle = poi doesn't take flight........ from what icon said, it sounds like you can keep the poi tangled on each other and maintain rotation (suicide airwrap, or I think you could just as happily name that a poi on poi propellor.... makes me happy anyway
)Varying where you make the contact with the poi you keep hold of, as far as I can tell, just varies what the trick looks like. I've found it easiest to make contact between the poihead and midsock! - closer to poihead. But it seems to be just as possible to do the trick using almost any point of contact with the said poi.
theortically, it must be possible to keep flicking the poi into the air and reflicking it every time it comes down. I was having a go at it, but again it is a matter of timing - getting the height and rotation of the "flicked" poi just right so the "held" poi can make one rotation then be in the right place to make contact again. I found you have to flick the poi fairly high to keep it controlled - if you try to keep it low, the held poi has to spin really fast, which in turn makes the flicked poi rotate fast, thus the catch is harder to see/control.

Yep Matt was doing this pretty solidly B4 christmas but never mind it's not your fault your crap (well maybe it is)

Was I??? I was getting clean (ish) whip catches with my right hand out of weaves. But can't do repetitive whip catches. Haven't had space to practice since my new flat mate moved in. Plus i've been focussing solely on getting my tangles up to speed. Got some killer stuff going on.
As for tangle release >>> whip catch, i remember talking to bluecat about this last summer as being somewhat of a holy grail because it takes the degree of separation from throws and tangles down to zero. Look forward to seeing some in action.

I think what you're thinking of was me practicing to whip catch and then carry on spinning with one 1 whilst the caught poi kinda sits in the tangle. To do this whip catch near the head and cross left to right with the catching poi leading. looks like you're doing a 2 beat tangle (outside / outside) but you're only holding 1 poi.

Ok so i can do the hyperloop release thingy and i can do whip catches... putting them together... that just seems silly...
I must try it!

Then i didnt attempt it again because i know i wont be able to do it again so now i have 100% success record with this move
