Whhile I wouldn't say I swear like a trooper, I do swear quite a bit. And I want to try and stop it for next year. I also want to try and stop the blasphemy as well!
Any ideas people have about the best way to do this? I can't afford a 'swear jar' or anything like that, cos I'm saving for next year and I need all the money I can keep!

Get someone to hit you everytime you swear...I know violence is not the answer but I had someone hit me (not too hard but not too soft) and I cut down immensely.

or you could put a rubber band around your wrist, and snap it every time you swear. it really hurts and hopefully that won't cause you to swear more!!
i have to try not to swear when i go to my folks place...it's so hard! but eventually it just comes naturally! think of some alternative words to use...or just limit the swear words you do use! and luckily there are a few swears that seem quite acceptable now! (thanks a bit to a certain car ad!) some alternatives could be fudge! freakin! dang! (that's my personal fave!
) or how about shoot! or sugar! or darn! or firetruck! do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and good to eat!
if at first you do succeed, try not to look too astonished!

fudge is a good alternative for the f word.
Have you noticed that both ways of stopping the swearing involve pain???

I remember being on rowing camp once and having a 9 year old hit me (really hard for a 9 year old! that usually caused me to swear again!) every time I swore! But the problem was that she went to a catholic primary school so therefore "swearing" meant "god" "bloody" "damn" in fact, all the old fashioned ones that you now get on prime time TV!
basically, I'm cutting back on S, F and C (not that I say that anyways). oh, and the blasphemy. Other than that I figure that what they say on prime time TV (sometimes S gets said on prime time TV though! what a sign of the times) is fair game!

Hang around with ppl who do not swear or people that you care about hearing you swear perhaps..or have children.
Is it the Truth?
Is it Fair to all concerned?
Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships?
Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

I dont really understnad why people attach such a stigma to it... Words are words and all have their place in each language... I bet the queen knows the swear words...
Well yeah true she probably doesnt say them... Anyhows good luck and the best way is to actually realise you are doing it or just take your time when talking that way you can engage you gears before the engine starts moving! So slow down see everything in slow motion.. Then you might catch the thought before it turns into a word...

I dont understand why people feel the need to swear all the time. For me swearing is used in a context. Time and place. Not all the time and in all places. All that seems to lead to is an escalation in swearing.
I find it offensive and unnecessary.

im a nightmare with swearing - was meetin my friends parents the other day n really had to curb it out respect but it was soooo hard!!

I dunno. I kinda like swearing. I don't around my parents, but we've had conversations about the word sh!t over dinner (laughed over the past tense in english: shat, which I found in my dictionary today at school, oddly enough.)
For some reason I find it amusing. Don't ask why. (I don't)

Every time you swear carry on, bang your head against the wall, and scream (loudly and shrilly) that the demons possessed you to do it and that they must leave your head.

It's a good idea to be able to turn it off and on.
I don't swear at all when I'm at work.
It seems kind of natural actually.
Some of my friends and students can't seem to control it. It becomes problematic in the work world if you simply can't stop cursing.

If you're saving for next year wouldn't a swear jar be a good idea?
Everytime you swear you'll have a little bit more saved up for next year, when next year comes your swearing problem, no, issue will be solved and you'll have a big jar of money to spend.
it all depends on how much you swear i guess, if its all the time then i guess it would bankrupt you before next year comes and the idea is utter rubbish but if not maybe it'll work Super Gidg!!!!

Rouge, good luck. I have a couple of friends that say whenever they want to cut back on the swearing they visit me more often. They say I "the look" and I use it very well.

Jon, I was listening to the radio the other week and someone had that python thingo and put a backing on it! it was so funny!
I notice that I swear depending on who I'm with, but I feel that if I'm going to be teaching, then I'd better watch myself! But usually I am in agreement that they are just words, so get over them!
So far I'm just thinking before I speak a bit more and replacing a swear word with something a bit less harsh.
