Uni of Sussex in Brighton is seriously good, everything you could want from a uni. Lots of wonderful people, millions of clubs and societies and we were recently voted the 58th best uni in the world, above prestigious places like Warwick..

I do English and we're apparently one of the best English unis in the country, and were even voted the best on some poll..

I also do Philosophy and our Philosophy department is fantastic, really good, approachable lecturers and stuff...

Halls are great, I'd go for East Slope or Kent House (where I was), and the nightlife in Brighton is legendary.. 50+ clubs, 200+ pubs and bars.. and we have the peir, the Pavillion, millions of cool shops, a decent shopping centre, lots of independant music shops and a fair few spinners (although more would be good! So come!)..

Well, there's my advert. biggrin

Not Cov. I have no idea on the course (tho the psych bit is fantastic), but spinners are thin on the ground.. Notts might be a good choice for spinners tho smile

I think it'd be a mistake to goto a uni based on the people, because people change each year. Some loose interest, some leave, societies etc are great one year and non existant the next. If you choose a uni with primary the best course your grades can give you, that you like the feel of the campus etc that's within striking distance of a city, you shouldn't have a problem finding spinners. I went to uni in Colchester (university of essex) which was a bit thin on the poi scene, but under an hours train from London, so not really a problem. Personally I really enjoyed Essex, it's good for computing and has an electronic engineering dept that's top 5 for research (it's the nearest uni to BT's adastral park in ipswich (BT being the main researcher for telecoms in the country), so a lot of the money and lecturers came from it (Marconi was also in the area, before it went tits up)).

Yeah, Southampton is good too. It's where my lady is at uni, and where I am at the moment.

Wasn't at all keen on Portsmouth though, but maybe only because I didn't know anyone there!

U know the best way to find out is to actually go to the open days so you get a feel of the UNI... Since you are on the site you can find out whther there is anyone who spins in the area and possibly meet up on the same day that you go... Its not that difficult! I would suggest not paying attention to anyone who tries to make the descision for you as its your choice and you will know what feels right for you when you find what you like.

I would recommend three places...in order:
London
Sheffield (except the weather)
Brighton
but dont listen to me!
good luck!

It's the most boring bit of advice anyone could ever give, but you need to go to the uni that you're going to be happy at.

Most guide books rate them on academic performance but the Virgin Guide also does stuff like how good the town is to live in, what the locals are like and how much beer will cost you.

Have a poke through that one, get a few down and visit them. Ultimately you have to spend four years in a department and having crap lecturers will wreck the experience.

(I have three degrees from Portsmouth, I like it there but as they're in engineering geoscience my exp is no good to you.)

There is a slight possibility that I am not actually right all of the time.

I'm at Southampton Uni studying computer science, and I think it's ace. It was the best uni I visited when I was looking around. The comp sci department is the biggest in the uni (I think) and it has a really nice building full of bits of technology you can play with.

Spinners-wise, we've got www.soton-firespinning.co.uk. How can a scene with it's own domain name be bad? biggrin The uni has a circus soc full of very nice people, and the soton institute has one too.

The night life is distinctly average, as is the shopping.

London is very cool. If you can afford it and you can get into a london uni, it's a good place to live.

Best thing to do is visit as many as you can though...

Thanks alot for your advice you lovly ppl. It was exactly what i was looking for smile

dromepixie: i wasn't really trying to let ppl to make a decision for me i just wanted true opions as Eera said most guids are realy poor on real opions.

puresock: Southhapmton was already on my list but stupid me for fogeting about the resident spinners. Plus that circus thing sounds very cool (even if its not going to be the same ppl there when i g o Flid smile). That has pushed it up the list in my estimations.

Thanks again for all your help and keep it coming if possible biggrin

Depends on when you'll be joining. I'm certainly going to be there for at least one more year, maybe more if I do my PhD... smile

Anywhere with a remedial English course? wink

I can't recommend where - but choose well as it'll affect a lot of your future years and your friends - so choose as much for the vibe of the place as the quality of the course. I'd also say go for a campus uni where you're guaranteed a place on campus at least one of the years. Smaller, camppus based unis are a lot friendlier and community based than many others. I used to be shocked visiting other unis and find that my friends didn't know half the people in the bar!

Right so the list so far is:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Psychology and Computing // Bournemouth University

Computer Science // University of Bristol

Artificial Intelligence and Computing // University of the West of England, Bristol

Computer and Video Games // Southampton Institute

Computer Games Development // Swansea Institute of Higher Education

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is not the final version but close to. Still one place to go .

Anyone know anything bad about any of the Unis or even the courses?

Vixen there is simply no way i would get into Oxford biggrin
