I have actually... uhhh... Never spun poi before... I started spinning glowsticks a couple years ago.. I never really took it seriously because I was always too busy. However I did pick it up pretty quickly. I was looking through the free online poi lessons on this site and went through the list of "tricks" only to find that they were all things I learned in the first few days of spinning glowsticks. The only trick on the list I have a problem performing is the behind the back weave.. But I think I need to stretch my arms out a little more...

About two years ago I moved to San Antonio and soon after started getting into the "rave" scene.. I was fascinated by the people spinning the glowsticks around. It did not take me long to replicate the shoe lace affixed cyalume design.. After I learned the tricks I saw others do I eventually stumbled across the rest I know... But now it seems I am at a standstill...

For the last week I have been going to the beach (I live on an island so the beach is less than a mile away) and have been attempting to come up with new tricks. Aside from a couple small changes in certain patterns and timing I have been unable to think of a distinctly new trick... So I thought I would go online and see if I could find some poi to purchase and some friends to make!

I go to San Antonio and Houston fairly often so if anyone is from either of those places let me know if we could meet up sometime... I also go to Italy and Scotland every year to visit friends and family. It would be awsome if on one of my trips I could maybe hop over to another European country and meet with some of the members on this forum.. I am dieing to meet people who enjoy spinning poi as much as I do. .. Or who even enjoy it at all...

So anyways... I have never actually spun fire poi but the mechanics are the same as glowsticks (just have to remeber not to do wraps unless I have applied flame retardant chemicals). And the flesh charring balls of inferno added to the equation do not intimidate me in the least bit so I think the transition should be a smooth one. lol.

I am rambling .. I just drove three and a half hours through desolate farm land to get back from Houston today and I am kind of REALLY worn out... I hate living in Texas...

Well I am happy to have been welcomed to the site biggrin. Sorry if I sound kind of dull and serious right now. I just need to get some rest.

Lates.

hey! don't be so hard on Texas!

anyway, there is a cool fire gathering once a month in Houston, with smaller ones more often just for practice (spinning sans fire). If you look up Spritie, Spitfire, or Mand here on HoP, they can give you all the details. Also check out GreatBallsOfFire on yahoogroups - it is a low traffic (ie. no chatting, just announcements and relevant discussion) email group for Houston area fire peeps, but people from all over Texas arre on it and you can often get info about other things of interest happing in the state

biggrin Awsome! Thanks for the info Vanize!

As for Texas, it is just not for me... Well my section of it anyways.. I am not a warm climate type of person, and South Texas has a very hot climate. I do not even want to think about the humidity.. frown It is awful! Living on the island is only slightly better than the mainland because we get the prevailing winds coming off the Gulf of Mexico.

The main reason I do not like living here though is the culture/locals... Ignorance and lazyness thrives frown .. I am going to stop my senseless complaining now..

It is only Corpus I would never recommend as a place to move.. Though I do like Austin, Houston has its benefits, and living in San Antonio for two years was not all that bad...

Right well I now have to drive 30 minutes to get into town... lates

I just received my beaming poi from HOP and I am loving them! They are much heavier than I had anticipated, but it now seems a LOT easier to complete all the tricks I know. And I love the colour of the blue LED lightsticks. Thanks a lot HOP! So now do I get some space to upload a video of me spinning?? huh? Do I?? tongue

!! I live !! (I fear I may have to reintroduce myself it has been so long.. heh)... Hello everyone! Wow.. It is amazing how quickly time flies! School(getting bach. in architecture), work (part time at a book store), and the piano(at least four hours of practice a day) suck up all of my time. frown But I am getting the piano tuned and its action reworked right now so it will be down for a week or so frown frown ... But it gives me more time to practise POI ! Speaking of which!!!! I have been invited to spin at a local outdoor bar called the Blue Lagoon! I have never spun in front of a mob of people all staring at me before though... I can feel the butterflies in my stomach... ugh.. I imagine it will be very fun.... But first I am going to need to order new fire poi , and I was wondering which style I should get... confused Also.. Can I use the chains from my beaming poi and just buy the fire poi heads?
Thanks,
Logan

... Hmm. Maybe I should narrow the field of options down a little bit.. The fire poi head styles I am torn between are the mokey fist, the tube core, and the cathedral. I am only looking for a single head per chain/wire. How are the weka fire poi? I need something that will last a while. How do these poi compare in weight to the Beaming poi I purchased from HOP?...

Can't answer for sure but my best guess is that they are close to the weight and speed of a pair of the 8'x2"x1/8" cathedral wicks fully fueled. The good news is that cathedrals hurt less when you hit yourself with them, even when they are on fire.

8'x2"x1/8" !! wow... Eight feet? What dimension is that for? The combined length of chains affixed to the heads is all I can think of...

So the 2.5" monkey fists should weigh less than the plastic beaming poi?...

The beaming poi are fun and easy to control, but their weight severley diminishes the speed I often want to spin at. This brings another question to mind... Say for example you have a set of 2.5" fire poi and you spin them very quickly. How well does the flame stay alit?

And am I able to use the chains I currently have attached to my beaming poi with the separately sold fire poi heads in the HOP shop??

I went skydiving today... It was pretty fun, but it was not the rush I thought it would have been. If nothing else it supplied me with a great view of as-far-as-the-unfortunate-eye-could-see flat, barren, and devoid-of-any-sort-of-aestheticly-pleasing-value farmland from 10500 ft (3200m). But I still recomend it to those of you who have never attempted it.

frown This is turning into an online journal...

Sigh... Anyone have any interesting or funny stories about one of their skydiving experiences? Anything...? At all? Maybe even just a simple answer to one of my questions above.....above.... above...above.....

My dog has congestive heart failure and the vet says it does not look good frown

He is going to try and remove some of the water around his heart tonight so it will beat more normally. But even with the meds the vet does not give him more than a couple of months... frown Everything is going to be so empty without him. He is the only creature I even like. Sigh...
