Hello, hello and welcome to the thread for all Irish fire dancers, spinners, object manipulators, drummers, musicians and anyone else interested in these arts in Ireland.



This thread was started nearly a couple of years ago now... and it's since grown to include more people, gatherings, events, fun and games than we had thought possible.



And it's still growing - so if you're new to the arts, or want to meet up with any of us, please post at the end of this thread to introduce yourself... or send me a PM with your email address and I'll add your name to our mailing list.



There are spinners, dancers and manipulators all over the country, and you'll find lots of them on here... don't be shy, we're nice biggrin

Updates on Circus/spinny gatherings around Ireland – 6 November 2006



Belfast:



Tuesday:

5pm-7pm

Streetwise (community circus) meet in Morton Community Centre (off Lisburn Road)… providing a free, indoor space to practice and learn new skills. Run by the lovely Dave from Babcock and Bobbins (on HoP as Bobbins).

8.30pm-10pm

Lisa and I take our poi workshop in Crescent Arts Centre (featuring occasional special guests when they visit smile)… Please PM me if you are interested in poi lessons.

9.30/10pm-midnight

Fortnightly fire gathering in Crescent Park, Belfast (opposite The Fly bar). This is a friendly and informal gathering for anyone interested in spinning fire or learning more. Please PM me if you want to know the dates for the next gathering.



Wednesday:

7pm-9.30pm

Adult circus in Belfast Community Circus (Gordon St, Cathedral Quarter, Belfast). Weekly circus training for adults using various circusy props. £3 per week (I think).



Galway:



Tuesday:

5pm-??

NUI Galway juggling club meet in Aras Na MacLeinn. Run by the fabulous Eimhin (on here as Flip), providing a free, indoor space to practice and learn new skills.



Thursday:

5pm-??

NUI Galway juggling club meet at the Bank of Ireland theatre… as above.



Sunday:

12pm-4pm

NUI Galway juggling club meet at the Dangan Sports Centre…. As above.



Cork:



Tuesday:

5.30pm-8pm

Cork Community Circus meet at Loch Community Centre, at the top of Barracks St, Greenmount – providing an indoor space to practice and learn new skills. (Probably) run by the lovely Cormac (not on HoP). Three euro cover charge.



Limerick:



Thursday:

7pm-9pm

Limerick Juggling Club meet at the Limerick Youth Centre, on Lower Glentworth Street. Club run by fantastic jugglers Joe McGinley and Richy Brennan.



Dublin:



Monday:

5pm-7pm

DIT juggling club meet in the hall behind Belvedere College – providing a free, indoor space to practice and learn new skills.



Tuesday:

7pm-9pm

Trinity juggling club meet in Goldsmith Hall, Pearse Street – providing a free, indoor space to practice and learn new skills.



Wednesday:

7pm-9pm

DIT juggling club meet in Linen Hall, across the road from Bolton Street. Go through the archway at the side of Bodkins, and it's on the top floor, in the gym.

4.30pm-6pm

NCAD juggling club meet… somewhere



Thursday:

6pm-9.30pm

UCD juggling club meet in the Memorial Hall, beside the Architecture buildings – providing a free, indoor space to practice and learn new skills.



Dun Laoghaire



Tuesday:

6pm-8pm

IADT meet… somewhere… a new club, and everyone is welcome!

Tralee juggling convention… organized by the lovely Fanzini’s, the public show is looking fantastic… smile

I have been thinking about a pre -burning man party up here in the cuntry-way the coos and sheep-an all.
Will start a new thread for it if there is enough interest and stop hi-jacking this one smile

thanks to all the fire spinners and drummers for making it out to templebar square lastnight. you helped raise €400 which will go to help fund the 4 music schools run by the "chernobyl childrens foundation".

ohh your shitting me, i was in temple bar last night, i got the 19.30 bus home (T_T)

guys im stuck here. i gotta buy a set of fire poi and i was searching dublin all last weekend. in visuals they cost 55 and in art,craft and hobby shop in jervis they were 53. thats a rip off so i need a better source for them, unfortunetly i cant go online.

im living in cork and even pinochio's costs a bomb. HELP ME, ITS SUNNY N I WANNA SPIN!

welcome back to the boards hug its been far toolong since we've seen ya round here matey. you have three options available to you, make/commission/buy.
1: make - go into the poi boards and get some helpful advice on what to use, and how to construct your own poi.
2: commission: ask (very nicely,now) in this thread fo someone to build you a set of poi and send them out to you.
3: buy from the shop in hop. if you need to you can check it out, and tell me which one you want, then if you send the money up to me i'll sort out the transaction for you?
which option suits best...the choice, is yours!!

Hey dude,
well I'm living in Cork, i dont drink or drug anymore, havent done so in 6 months so far, thinks r cool. I work in FÁS teaching ppl the ECDL (a computer qualification) nad i go to gym quite a bit n cycle around alot so ive kinda switched from completely off the rails to big into fitness so things r a lil funny on that front. im made to get back spinning tho.

Aiden says he lives in Limerick and pm'd me about a comission, so we'll see how that works out. fingers crossed! im dying to get back moving on that front. if that doesnt work out i'll get back to u dude!

you may not believe it, but its way cheaper to fly from dublin to cork. the train is 54 or something, but you can fly for less than 40.

unless, of course you have spesific reason to take the train.

As you can see, there are buses, trains, planes, ferries...

To everybody regarding the fuel:

My appologies.

I will be looking into fuel info more here on HOP. I was under the impression that Kerosine and parafin are the same thing and the names are used inter changably. I haven't been on top of such details since I was last a regular poster which is over a year and half ago.

I did at that time read that kero was the best fuel to use. I do remember reading before that if a fuel is unsmelly and not smokey it's because it has chemicals added to it which are in fact worse for you.

I at no time before the weekend thought Kero would be bad for you or your wicks, but I hope that goes without saying.

I take on board what you guys were saying about there being different grades or qualitys and all that and again I was not aware of this before the weekend. After talking to Martin I worked hard to find a place that sold kero by the litre. I believed it to be cheaper exactly because it was sold by the litre and was not being sold as lamp oil, not because it was a lower grade.

If anyone feels there wicks have been damaged then pm me and we'll sort it out.

Tis not so much the wicks James...



Tis the fact that most people felt quite sick (headaches) after using that fuel.



I drove home on Saturday night - three hours in my lil car which was stinking of the stuff...



And I ended up having to stop the car to be sick just outside Belfast. Not good frown



Don't like being sick. ubbcrying



Anyways, I'm sorry I didn't let you know about the fuels sooner, but I thought that as you'd been playing for longer than all of us, you would have known already. smile



As far as I know, parrafin/kerosene are the same thing, but there are loads of different grades. The cheaper the grade, the less refined, and the more filled with toxic nastiness.



That red stuff is about the worst. You can smell it as soon as you open the container... yes it's cheaper (which is good for big gatherings)... but it's not worth it in the horrible feeling you get afterwards.



Anyways, never worry... tis all a learning curve smile hug
