yes, i got a nose job too.

anyway, for a general update, sorry for being away for a couple of weeks. ive just spent over a week hiking the 'overland track' that stretches 80km across the mountain tops of tasmania.
it was absolutely incredible. ill write a more eloquent description of the trip later, but after that long of delightfully fresh clean air and water, no beer, and trekking with a stupidly heavy pack, i feel fantastic.

i met the dear flynt in hobart yesterday, and had a wonderful day drinking tea, spinning, watching shithouse performers, watching fantastic performers, drinking more tea, browsing through those wonderful alternative gift shop thingys, then finally lighting up at her parents house that evening.

btw, her father makes a mean homebrew beerchug wink

i have now seen first hand what it looks like when flynt is laughing so hard that she is unable to do anything else.

thats the interim report for the moment.

peace, love, and hugs to all hug

An update on my weird world….

My goodness, its been waaaay too long since ive spent much time on HoP. Thought I might type a little update to explain, in the words of Patrick who emailed me today, why 'ive dropped off the face of the planet.'

Since decemeber life has been one crazy blur - I could type about this for several hours after which time you will probably be falling asleep drooling on your keyboard, so I wont bore you with too many details…but in summary....

I flew south to the beautiful Tasmania over xmas & new years for a 2 week hiking extravaganza with dad. I spent 8 days on the Overland Track, which is the most beautiful hike that ive ever been on. Ill post some photos eventually.
The greatest part of the entire experience was the sense of community among the hikers – meeting so many souls being caring and considerate of others and the natural surrounding environment was a refreshing change from reality.

Then onto Hobart, where I met the delightfully huggable FLYNT, (Andrew), among a few others, and had many hours of silly hilarity, with lots of chai tea, cool buskers, shithouse buskers, and several snort laughs…

From there I travelled up the coast to spent new years at a beautiful place on the north eastern coast called freychinet.
Im not really the biggest fan of new years, but I was determined not to spend the evening alone. …. So I did what any good HoPer would do, went to the pub and chatted to the manager, and in exchange for a short firepoi and breathing performance received free beer for the evening and many weird and wonderful persons who wanted to talk to me cos they were drunk and I appeared to be insane. Yay for spinning.

Freychinet was stupidly hot. Have you ever tried hiking in 35 degree C heat with 30 kg on your back? Don’t. it’s a stupid thing to do.
I had a slightly chilling moment at a spectacular place called wineglass bay [ It’s a very touristy little bay, being only 1 hours walk from a carpark [2 hours if you were as fat as some of the tourists]]
It was at the end of the long day walking, and I went for the swim. I kindof felt weird, slightly colder despite the water not really being that bad. Through the water, I could see this long, white, fat object on the sand – about 10cm diameter, in a long arc about 80cm long
Now im normally fairly inquistive about weird and wonderful objects that I randomly find, it looked like an odd s but I was completey chilled by this… thing.
I waded down the beach a bit further, and there was another one. Now, before you mention, I was NOT on any substances of any type. I got out of the water then, because I wasn’t feeling comfortable at all.
What I found out 2 days later, was the wineglass bay was named, for in part being a lovely wine-glass shaped bay, but mostly, because it used to be the site of a whale slaughter station. They would drag the whales onto the sand, and butcher them. At times there was so much blood seeping into the water, that the entire bay looked red. Thus the name… wineglass bay.

Ok, slightly trippy moment over, back to conventional story telling.

I was back home in Sydney early January, after which I moved 150km up the coast to Newcastle. For my final year of engineering, I gained a scholarship where by I complete my thesis working in industry. Its not a bad set-up…. But you notice a few things when moving away from the city….

You cannot get a decent chicken laksa anywhere.
There are many people who think mullets are cool.
Drivers are nice to cyclist.
When going for a run, many people lean out of the car windows and yell ‘run forrest run!’

But overall its great.
Its especially interesting in that im flatting with two fundamentalist Christians – who lets just say are a little naïve and protect [no offense to anyone intended]. Nice guys, but I think they are learning a lot from living with me. To give you an example, I had to explain to one of them the difference between left and right wing politics the other night….

Ive hooked up with a Newcastle fire crew. Mostly they are beginners, but theres a few guys who have been spinning for a few years who aren’t too bad at all. Even more impressive that they are mostly self taught – no HoP lessons or jedi threads to teach them. Overall, I nice bunch of hippies – I realised it was a fairly typical bunch when after first meeting them I was offered a joint within the hour…..
Ive somehow got into a psycho exercise routine – since my hiking at the start of the year, ive lost almost 10 kg… and I can now spin with my shirt off and not feel too self conscious….

the only other major thing ill mention now, is by quick weekend fling down to melbourne to see the wondreful flynt, cassandra, and josh.

So apologies to all the HoPers that I haven’t chatted to in a while, ill call/email/PM you all soonish as i get back onto HoP more.

cheerio!!
ed.
