I know the entry details say 'any' of the fire arts, but what fire implements will be featured or are ok to use for entries? I ask only because I haven't seen any rope dart, fire swords, fans, flags or whips in any of the entries. I've only seen COL4, but just wanted to make sure.

i think diversification could be dangerous and certainly, more toys would make it harder to pick a 'winner' (mind you, do we even need a winner?).

I think Pele's Element used fire fans (or were those fingers?) and there are flags in the DasSpielvolk video and then there's that crazy three-section fire staff that Bender uses.
Personally, I think the more toys the better. COL4 is about sharing our love of the art and part of that is sharing new toys, new moves, new ideas.
However, I think voting would have been alot easier, if there were categories, like best poi, staff, double staff, glowsticks, etc. Or would that make it harders?

col 1 featured jo derry doing an awsome set with aerotech glo clubs, and for a set thats a good few years old now still stands out as one of the best col entries of all time.

So far there has been a variety of props used in all col videos and i certainly feel people take all entries in to consideration with what people have produced overall with their entries.
Its not really about winning, that to me has never been an issue, its about sharing and contributing to the communities around the world, its not just the active members of the community that see these videos but others too, i first saw col1 when i had just started to learn poi then became an active member.
I hope that every one can contribute in the future in some way, with out people that put entries in, begginers and active community folk can all have some thing new and inspiring to sit, watch and learn from year in year out.
Wether submitting to col 5 next year or just putting your own videos online people are allways greatful in any contributions made.

Realize it isn't just about "who does poi/staff the best," because if you'll look at the winners on CoL4 they weren't doing new showcases of extreme hyperloop/BTB/parallel/whatever craziness or pouring on extra thick skill, they were performing a show that entertained the viewer. That can be done with any toy, by anyone regardless of the number of techniques they can do. That's one thing I really like about the CoL competitions... they do show off a variety of new skills and innovations but the real value is in the entertainment... too often people lose sight of that anymore and only see value in being able to do the latest "most Jedi" BS and show off, when really the way you're going to inspire others is by giving them something more than just technical spinning or flowing from move to move without repeats.
CoL4 was even advertised as being about the STYLE of the performers, and you could basically sum up the audience favorites vote as "who has the most style" or more generally who they found the most entertaining. The winners all displayed great amounts of style, and that's what set them apart from the pack.

i'd advocate the use of categories again. i agree it's mostly the overall show, but i know i personally evaluated the skill involved. and there's definately different skill involved in poi, staff, etc. it was really hard for me to vote because of that. i couldn't compare the skill involved in poi versus staff.

rob and vern, I must dissagree slightly. the winners (poiz in da hood) had a few technical moves. especialy the "flowers" that menick does. those are very difficult to do as precise as he does them.

I agree that our entry had a lot to do with style but there was an equal amount of time and energy put into the technical aspect aswell. *chomp chomp*
Either way I recommend grabbing a friend and trying some moves...not only will you find it challenging but it will add a whole new element of fun to your spinning.

personally i blame dmt - or maybe the lack of a decent amount of it
the phenomenon can be summed up thusly:
"some things only work in pilton".
only six months till i'm back in that heavenly valley...
back to the topic:
the reason i said lots of different toys is dangerous is because i worry that the focus of the video will disappear.
if it isn't staff or poi i think it should be kept to a minimum and only examples of the highest calibre (e.g. crap fire club juggling by someone who does poi too should have no chance of getting on the video - it has to be [censored] hot like the rest of the performances).
after all, the poi and staff spinning on col4 is some of the best i have ever seen on video - if other toys are included, i'd like to think the same could be said for those sections too...
secondly, try and pick between a poi routine and a double staff routine.
now try and compare those to fire sword, club juggling and rope dart routines and you'll see quickly it becomes impossible to decide on a winner.
not to mention that it would have little to do with 'circles of light'...
i doubt i'll be submitting a video to col5 as i am a lazy bastardo.

I agree with Puk-o and Cass, that each video should show the personality of that twirler and/or twirlees. Poi's in the hood showed humor, darkness, and even grace... PK showed that even if he does look scary, you just know he's just a big teddy bear underneath...... and Nix showed how to split time and space in two, jump around for abit and do a little dance, jump back out, and continue twirling...

every one has their favourite spinners for many reasons, just look at the thread in poi moves about it.
we all twirl for many reasons and we all enter for many reasons, i love and respect so many people that twirl and what skills they show, its like the prize for the ultimate twirler... aint going to happen everyones got a different style or technique, every one offers some thing different than the others and they all get better and better in such a short span of time and when you make a video or what ever every one thinks damn that could have been better, damn i just got 5 new moves down since filming that.
I'm all for just sharing ideas and styles and helping the new folk learn for these videos, giving them inspiration and a desire to learn furter and take these skills into every day life, i feel that poi has taught me and many of us certain skills in life, the way we think, say and do things in general and lead us to a wonderful world of friendship by meeting others from the community, from what i have gained in my years of spinning that i love nothing more than giving some thing back and not wanting any thing from it other than to be happy helping people learn.
Hop was small when i first came here long before i registered, and now look at it, its crazy all these people that look up to some of us for that inspiration and what we have learned on our journey, i'd just like for us all to help them on theirs, no bickering, no competition just a straight up love for sharing and helping.

every one has their favourite spinners for many reasons, just look at the thread in poi moves about it.
we all twirl for many reasons and we all enter for many reasons, i love and respect so many people that twirl and what skills they show, its like the prize for the ultimate twirler... aint going to happen everyones got a different style or technique, every one offers some thing different than the others and they all get better and better in such a short span of time and when you make a video or what ever every one thinks damn that could have been better, damn i just got 5 new moves down since filming that.
I'm all for just sharing ideas and styles and helping the new folk learn for these videos, giving them inspiration and a desire to learn furter and take these skills into every day life, i feel that poi has taught me and many of us certain skills in life, the way we think, say and do things in general and lead us to a wonderful world of friendship by meeting others from the community, from what i have gained in my years of spinning that i love nothing more than giving some thing back and not wanting any thing from it other than to be happy helping people learn.
Hop was small when i first came here long before i registered, and now look at it, its crazy all these people that look up to some of us for that inspiration and what we have learned on our journey, i'd just like for us all to help them on theirs, no bickering, no competition just a straight up love for sharing and helping.
How do you change this thing???

its hard to pick a winner in these sort of arts as everyones style is so different and its only a matter of opinion. Its not about who is better than others...its about how many more people like one person than the next.
I think that COL5 should be broken down into sub-sub-sections:
poi: best technical spinning, best single trick, best coreography, greatest fluidity, nicest style, etc
staff: same as above
etc: etc.
