I recently saw one guy get his staff from off the ground by flick spinning it around one foot using the other then just pasing it up to his hands and carrying on from there. (Sorry if I explained that badly ).

Has anyone else got any cool moves for getting the staff off the ground? I'd really appreciate finding out, or how to effectively do the move I tried to describe above...

Cheers

a few... obviously there are the two juggling pickups, one on the outside of the foot, one on inside behind the other leg....
one nice one i dont do often enough is to block one end(stand on it if not on fire....) and slide the other foot along unmderneath, tricky to get smooth, but very nice...
Rob

nice to see you cunningly please charles with a noo thread...

hey pyrophile... do you do doubles? cause if so then i think you will like these... basically practise with one and get stalls on your feet reallyreally smooth. then play with doubles, stall one of them, go crazy with one staff for a few seconds, then pick up the other one into the pattern again..
mucho fun, if unrehearsed by myself.

nothing to show you dibs im afraid. nix will be here tho and hes not that bad at staff i guess....so maybe could pass on a shrug or two..

hmmm. yes i think so looking back.

with one you can either throw, wrap or just place a staff on your foot ready to be picked up like a juggling catch,. the easiest way i have found t odo this is to go for horizontal spins anticlockwise(right handed person) and let the staff roll down my left leg and behind, stop it with the right foot and adjust so the right foot is underneath... then flick baack up into a vertical plane... better? hope so cause my descriptive powers are at an all time looooow.so with doubles you do the same thing, start out both horizontal and stall one of them, then somehow get the other staff vertical(check the plane transfers thread) and bring the other one back in.

tho one i have been tryin to get for a while... contact over the shoulder and drop inbetween legs to stall on the right foot... any handy hints anyone?

enjoy

Apart from the humouress side of things (such as the thread linked to by Rex), there's still an unlimited amount of easy pickups for a non-firie audience.

1. Fall over on your back (head pointing to the staff, slide your hands under it and do a forward roll with the staff tucked in by your stomache.

2. Slide a hand palm-down under the staff, lift it on the back of your hand and do a few devil stick moves with your arms as the sticks before resuming.

3. Pick it up with your mouth. (little kids love this one, the ladies aren't so keen on it.

4. The roll-onto-top-of-foot-then-kick-up as already mentioned. However, try different kick-ups, such as making it spin, kicking it really high, kicking over your head, doing a pirouette before you catch it, behind the back catches etc etc etc...

If you want tricky stuff to impress your other fire friends, then that's a different story altogether. A helpful hint though, is the bigger your wick, the higher off the ground the centre of the staff is when it's dropped, which makes life a lot easier as well as bigger flames...

Miniero, could you try again with that explanation, I'm still a little confused

my favorite as long as im on grass or sand (or something soft and squishable) is to move back to about 2 feet and dive at my staff, do a forward roll, and come up spinning(usually side to side cuz its easiest while regaining ballance)and continue on as before. the other way im working at is to do a forward roll offset from my staff (__---- [im the __ and the staff is the ----]) and grab the staff as i come up and start doing a sword swinging deal fer a bit.

oo oo oo i thought of one ! .....

this can only b done with a staff with a small wick ..
ok ok .... do a hansdstand ontop of ur staff (which is lying horizontally infront of you), then fall down to do an arch/bridge .. watever u wanna call it(belly facing upwards)then graab the staff as you stand up and start doing the helicopter ..... nothing fancy but if its done fast looks pretty snazzy

Mineiro,

Can you tell us a bit more about this, what does the baton champ do that we can learn from, etc.

Sounds pretty interesting!

weelll... all the contact(well nearly all) that i do or have ever seen done or thought about on HOP... that was in her basic lesson plan for beginners!
but never fear, one thing she did mention was that every fire swinger she had seen had their own individual stlye, while most baton twirlers were robotlike in their similarities... and all these things they do are learnable. so much so i think i will get myself a baton for practise.

nice things tho, i think most of them would be more appropriate on a new thread or old ones other than this.... will be on its way in abt 25mins...

charles - (still grovelling from previous misdemeanour) i have an easier way into the foot stall that leads to the doubles move... throw from right hand(vertical) onto the left foot, this takes a little practise to get the right no of spins.... but when you have done that you can just play with another staff( obviously difficult to move around..) until you want the second one back up, and then flick your foot outwards trapping the staff between foot and shin. the staff goes into your left hand spinning anticlockwise in front of you.

going into the move from vertical means you don't have to switch from horizontal to vertical with the second staff and seems to be better for the brain. not really sure why i thought the other way was easier, i guesss i just hadn't thought of doing it any other way.
