i think (in my infinite wisdom)
that what will happen is a new year will come around and everyone will go.....well

and that will be that they'll simply get back to thier drinks (or looting)

not a bad idea as far as the drinks go tbh

Given that this has been in the pipeline for a bloody long time, there's nothing we can do about it so although a gross and horrible death scares me, there's not too much I can do about it.

Makes me wonder about the hoo-haa about global warming if this has been on the cards before anyone had even heard of a 'carbon footprint'

And Melbourne getting earthquakes? What the heck! Where the hell was I?? Oh yeah, that's right... tongue2

Why wouldn't Melbourne get earthquakes? Have you ever seen an earthquake map of australia? We get a lot more than you might think.

"we" meaning Australia?

Well because Australia is rather quite big, and just because one area gets them a lot doesn't mean that everywhere does. Whyalla is quite a long way from Melbourne...and yup! According to the earthquake hazard map provided by Geoscience Australia, Whyalla is closer to an earthquake area than Melbourne.

and yet I've never felt one. I have only been here 6 months tho.
you get earthquakes in all sorts of random places around australia. There is or used to be an earthquake swarm near Burrakin in WA. there's a fault scarp in victoria that suggests there was a magnitude 6-7 earthquake in the recent geologic history (like last 10k years or so) and plenty of others like it all around the country. You also get quakes where ever people are trying to generate geothermal energy.
You never know where or when you'll get a quake in Australia. And that's half the fun smile

They're fun*! I felt a number while I was living in Vanuatu (including two that woke me up!)

*as long as they're not causing horrific amounts of damage, of course! (and when you're living on an island, yes, you freak the hell out over tsunamis when you feel an earthquake!)

What scares me about 2012 is thinking about what the zealots of the world might do.

There are so many prophecies that are being pinned down to 2012 now and I can certainly see the "rapture" taking place... but it may well be man made.

maybe I'm wierd, but I actually would like to be in a quake that causes lots of damage and especially one that creates a fault scarp instantly like the one in Meckering in the 60's. Can you imagine driving along a long straight highway, you hear a loud bang and then there's a 3m wall in front of you? That would be awesome*! What would be even cooler would be to watch a pyroclastic flow. So long as I have an escape route...
I think that's a geo thing tho.

*except for the inevitable car crash but...

Can you chase earthquakes? I imagine it's a similar idea to tornado chasing...

tornado's are a little easier to predict. I think everyone living on the west coast of the US are as close to quake chasers as you get.

Majestik: The reason Y2K never happened was because everyone was trying to prevent it. So by worrying about it, they took active steps so that nothing happened. (Not that I think UNIX systems would have noticed, since they use a different epoch.)

Geo: That would be pretty awesome. But yeah, predicting earthquakes is difficult....
Do you also get headrushes when standing on high mountains and considering how they got there?

not often. sometimes tho like on top of Mauna Kea in Hawaii. Archean rocks make my head spin when I try to work out what has happened to them in the last 2 billion years.

The first time it happened was in first year with a hand sample of iron ore from Thabazimbi. Was the first time I really felt how old something was, just suddenly. Was very odd.
Has happened a few times since though. Is a very cool feeling somehow.

You could just live in san fran, or anywhere else along a major fault line. lol But as far as actually "chasing" them i dont think it is feasible.

i'm no sure what to believe
but i like the theory that 2012 will bring a shift in our conciousness and human kind will evolve again. kind of like an awakening and we will all be united, well at least those who are ready. The spirit and our world are slowly merging together as one, soon i will be like a heaven on earth. I say just say positve. Don't live in fear, dwelling on things you reget in the past or things you think are going to happen in the future. Live in the now and spread love
