Yeah, well I'm working in the ER right now and I'm waiting for one of the residents to come back so I can stitch up this cut on this patient's face (they have to supervise me even though I can practically do it with my eyes closed).

So am I addicted? Ah...yup.

I hate getting stitches in the face - all told, I've had 23 (of my 90 something stitches total) in the face (including the chin).

I'd pretty much rather have stitches almost anywhere else

stitches are no fun. i had stitches in the back of my throat when i got my tonsils removed (i was 20) and they constantly bugged the crap out of me, until i coughed so hard that they ripped out. yuck.

ya i noticed that you're on here a lot like me, mike biggrin

When I was in the Boy Scouts, I was the knife safety instructor. So guess what I did? Yup, sliced of a nice flap of skin on my finger. The "doc-in-a-box" at the local urgent care place stitched the flap of skin back on, which eventually died and fell off. Seven stitches.

Honestly, we don't count stitches when we put them in. We just put them as often as we need to in order to close the wound.

yeah, the guy who stitched me up after my worst ever laceration (upper thigh, about 4 inches from making me a soprano) could only tell be it was somewhere between 35 and 45 stitches. There were only 15 on the outside though.

I've never had any stitches. Never broke anything, either. Got my nose cracked open last year, but only bruised some cartilage.

However, I can see why you love your job. A million billion years ago, when I was getting my EMT-D certification, we had to do 8 hours in an emergency room. My instructor told us that no matter what anyone said, we were not to assist with any surgery. I was there maybe an hour or two before a doctor ran up to me and asked me to assist with some surgery. What could I say? biggrin So I got to hold some guy's bloody arm still while it got sewn up. Very neat. Almost enough to make me regret deciding against med school.

E pluribus unum, baby.

Actually, we use DermaBond, which is basically Krazy Glue, for a lot of lacerations now. It's faster than stitches, no stitches to remove, and the cosmetic result is equivalent.

they developed a formula that the body can eventually dissolve?

It was my understanding that super glue was orginally developed for this purpose (which is why it is so effective at gluing you to your workbench), but that the cyanoacrylate wound up boing unacceptable since is left permanant lumps inside the scar.

You have to make sure that the wound is well apposed before you apply it. Because of the mechanism of healing, the wound heals from the inside out and due to the turnover of the scar tissue and the skin, any particles remaining inside are eventually expelled.

I never have had stitches or staples, but my dad had staples and stitches after his triple bi pass surgery. Looked odd for a bit, but got used to it.

Oh hey Lightning!!!!! I love your avatar! wink

I've got a question RE: my rabies thread in social.
If I was to have the rabies shots are they still given in the stomach and how many are there to get?

I don't know if you deal with that kind of stuff or not. Luckily the cat at my work was negative for rabies...Still don't know what she died of. rolleyes

Did you ever get light headed watching your first surgery up close? I did when I was helping the vet out. I was ok with everything else, except when it came time for him to suture in a drain. ubblol
