So after a little over a week of doing poi secretly from my dad, tonight if the weather is good I'm going too show him. Hopefully he'll be as impressed as mom was when I showed her.

The weather isn't clearing up. I can't show him tonight then. Hopefully it'll be better tomorrow.

My dad thinks its cool that I do poi, he's always worried that as I grew older I'd loose my "uniqueness" as he puts it. He likes to see me do different things.

However I have yet to show them my fire poi, they're just brutal looking even when not lit.

Cool. I think my dad will like it. He did like it when he saw people doing fire poi last year. The weather seems too be getting better so maybe tonight I will show him.

My parents don't like it. First, they don't like the fire. Second, they don't like the fact that I'm not a simple little sheep who is only interested in "normal" things like opera and wine and high art.

I also need to stop talking about my parents as if I have two of them. It's a difficult habit to break.

I still talk of "my parents" sometimes too. And it's been nearly 8 years since it became singular.

I showed him. He liked it, but only one of the glow sticks worked. Twice now I've bought glow sticks from that store and only one worked.
As for the thing about parents thinking their child is strange, I think mine have accepted the fact that I'm a bit strange and I'm probably never going too be an avrage person.

^^ an easy way to check for that before you buy is take the glowstick and hold it vertical next to your ear.
then flip it around and listen carefully. you should hear the little glass vial inside hit the bottom of the glowstick.
if no little "thunk" then it's dead.

hope that helps

And the high arts.......i love them espeacially when i am high. So light you fire in the rain in the snow in the sun and in the hail.....? it dont matter just have fun.

we could live beside the ocean leave the fire behind

All weather isn't good to spin in when you use light weight glow sticks and the wind is high.

my mums responce to me doin poi was
"i cant see why its so hard, its just spinning to lumps of fabric, it cant be hard!"

so i told her to have a go, and she now undesrtands that its hard to get the timingand sort it out, so i susspect that she has a lil more respect for it now, just remeber that our parents are a diff generation, and while minewere a part of teh 60's gen that formed free will and teh break from teh pervious trend of following you parents jobs, they are still going to look at things in a strange way to you!

later days

ps was that a lil too trisha for this message board (for you USA ppl, thats jerry springer in teh UK)

my parents love poi and love me doing it. My mum even bought me my fire poi! Ive only been spinning a matter of weeks but all my family and friends have taken an interest and had a go. Ive taught them a few basic moves and already one mate is going to buy his own (now ill have a spinning partner!)

I guess im lucky i have such open-minded people around me. They realise that something like poi is my release (considering i work in a bank i need it).

Im glad your dad liked it, mines never seen me spin as he lives too far away but next time i see him ill scare him a bit

never ever, ever, compare the lame excuse for a lame excuse of a 'chat' show called trisha, for the sheer god-like immagery and hilarity of jerry springer.

To back up a bit. I'm in houston right now and we are about to get hit with a tropical storm. So when it does hit i'm grabbing my fire poi and spin in the rain.

I can only agree, I work for a bank "bouncing" cheques. Mind numbing springs to mind, so I have to sharpen the senses in other ways to keep myself sane!

My mum used to do baton twirling when she was young. So she has no more problem with me spinning poi or staff as she does not really see it as much different to what she used to do.
