Hey HoP and all ye' inhabitants, picked up my first set of sock poi, well actually made my first set of sock poi with old tennis balls my cousin used for keeping laundry fresh in the dryer so they've got good weight to them but are relatively soft. I might be a newbie but I think I've got a nice starting pair.

By name I'm known as Drake, or Paül, although my given name is Kevin Meyerriecks, you can call me any variation of said names, or Sgt. Fury

Currently I'm staying in Long Island, New York. I technically live over in Queens NYC, but at my address there is a big hole due to demolition, so I'm a bit of a vagabond, but I've got plenty of friends and family willing to let me crash with them. I have to really look on this as an opportunity because if I didn't find myself homeless I never would've picked up spinning and that would be a shame.

Born 19 years ago in the middle of September, the 16th to be exact. Thus my sign is "Virgo". I was born in the year of the horse, and under the element of METAL. Not really sure how the element thing works but someone explained it to me once, all I know is I'm a welder by trade so it's pretty fitting.

Sex: Not yet today, oh you mean gender? Male

Right now I'm working on a novel, haven't titled it yet but its getting along, up to 293 pages and I'm really enjoying it. I'll be transcribing it soon so anyone who wants a free copy just send me a message or an email and its yours. Its a bit of a spin on the Grim Reaper, using Santa Clause logic. If he were a physical being yadda yadda he wouldn't have enough time to do what they say he does, likewise with the death (and birth, think about it, if a soul needs to be guided off of Earth what makes you think an infant soul can make it on its own to Earth?) rates as they are he can't do it alone, especially if he's a skeleton with no organs and thus cannot talk. He isn't the main character either way this isn't my publicity page, just thought I should let you know a basic synopsis, but now I realize, we're here not for books, but for poi and other related objects

Favorites, well I'm quite partial to a good homemade chili, my grandma made it, my mom makes it and now I make it (Note to anyone who cares, chili+tostitos scoops = explosion of awesome) and color, deep blue, the kind that gets you lost in a trance like the ocean.

What is the wing speed of an unladen swallow? Yellow

Toys: right now just my sock poi and a spare set of tennis balls I'm trying (rather unsuccessfully) to use to juggle

I'm a big weapons collector, and know how to use just about everything I own, used to train martial arts but then I had a pretty bad knee injury and was out of commission for nearly two years, I'm finally back up and moving but have gotten way out of shape and my knees hurt on a daily basis. I guess poi reminds me of the fluidity and movements of my old martial arts days, but with a new twist. Can't live without my music, classics, blues, jazz, classic rock, heavy metal although not screaming or death metal and Eurobeat which no one in the whole of New York but me seems to know exists.

Edumacation: High School and Tech School, I would go to college but I lack a home, money and the ability to sit still through classes, but if I fail at this writing thing I'll suck up my pride and find a scholarship

Favorite Book(s): Mine!, no seriously I don't read nearly as much as I should, but the sword of truth series is awesome. Dracula, heard there's a new one out by his great-grand nephew, will have to pick it up. Currently (sort of) reading Ozzy's memoir I Am Ozzy, its really good, quite entertaining and enlightening but I stopped reading when I got into full on author mode, to prevent distractions, you see how well that worked out.

Favorite Movie(s): Not really a big movie person, I'm told on a daily basis "You haven't seen that? COME ON!"

Godzilla vs. a Star Wars Star Destroyer. Who wins? Why? Based on size alone this would be a draw. The Empire would send out troops to face Godzilla on the ground, then I get to a point where answering becomes difficult. The Imperials obviously have blasters and other similar weapons, but if these are energy weapons we have to take into account the natural resistance Godzilla would have, without a sample to study I'm afraid any kind of answer would be mere speculation. Of course of Vader or the Emperor were with them it would be a completely different story as they could force choke him to death, even if their lightsabers did nothing.

Favorite TV show(s): See Movies

Plans for life in general: Somewhere down the line, if I ever make enough money for it, I want to open a real nice little tavern. Have a few rooms on the top floor for people to crash if they need it, serve only the best food and drink, many of which will be made by me. Book shows of all kind from my friends who'll probably still be rocking in a metal band to good Irish music. A guy can dream can't he?

Grew up on Billy Joel, I can't go and say anyone gets me more then he does, although I'm also a big fan of Sabbath, pre-dio is better but he's not bad in any way.

Do you think these pants make my butt look too big? Naw, but if I take off my glasses I'm legally blind so I don't know how much that means coming from me.

Favorite ice cream flavor(s): nothing beats good old vanilla in my book.

Marmite, Vegemite, or Nutella?* since I've never had any of them, I'll go with whatever makes you happy, I'm willing to try anything once.

Sorry if that was a bit long but yeah, this is me at a glance. I hope to make a lot of new friends, pick up some great advice and become a half decent spinner in my time. Most of all I hope that one day I can contribute something back to a beginner who doesn't know what he's doing and is looking for help.

Don't let your world end with you

Ok, I was never good at keeping secrets, but I didn't want to talk about it too much before I had a working prototype. Just cause I might fail then I would've lied.

Essentially it'll be the skeletal half of my Fire Gauntlet which I'll be using for performances with a pal of mine who does Fire Sword. The skin half (as of yet unnamed) is simply going to be a welding glove with an extra layer of fire retardant material sewn into it after securing several female snap fasteners. Then I'll attach an equal number of male snap fasteners (the really strong kind of course, don't worry I'm not completely insane) to a strip of kevlar wick. That way its easy to take off and fuel, store or replace when the wick finally burns out.

The skeletal half, the "Ifrit Unit", is a spider-man style wrist mounted flamethrower. It all operates underhand to avoid any kind of heat from the top when using both halves together. It'll operate very simplistically. We had a few complicated designs, but streamlined the hell out of it to get something easy to use, easy to understand and hopefully easy to make without sacrificing control. The fuel source will be a regular butane canister, a small one for ease of use and movement although it'll require it to be changed out more often. I might build a secondary fuel unit in the future to rectify this. The main controls are going to be two leather straps that hang by the base of my palm. The longer one is the fuel string and I control it with my middle finger, the more I pull the stronger the flow of butane, thus the bigger the flame. The second one is much shorter and connected to the ignition system, which is a jet/torch lighter that's been taken apart and wired into the system. The gas will travel along a plain old fuel line and out through a nozzle on the very base of my palm, as low as it can go while still pointing forward when I bend my wrist back.

That's all I've got, ok well I've got more but I'm not posting all my plans just yet, I need to make sure they work before someone tries it and winds up blowing their arm off. The completed project should be done relatively soon, really as soon as I get the money for parts. Haven't decided on a name for the Gauntlet yet, might just call it "The Gauntlet" though I like "Salamander". I've got a thing with names, probably not even worth naming it.

I'll have pictures and maybe even a bit of video up soon. Probably a few weeks. I'll work on building it this week, meeting with my troupe's photographer on saturday for a photo-shoot.

Also, I've decided, the glove is being called the Salamander, because that sounds incredibly awesome.

Yes I've been told to name it the Dragon Fist followed by countless irl SHORYUKEN!s. I'm thinking more a spider-man/pyro mix.

Big ole update and shameless self bump.

First, for those of you who've been wondering about my baby, the Ifrit Unit, our first working mockup of things to come was functional last night. Far bigger, clunkier and less wrist mounted than the final project will be, but it accomplished the goal of being a PORTABLE BACK MOUNTED FLAMETHROWER made from about $8 of hardware. Future versions will be more streamlined, custom built and capable of enabling the wearer to have a completely free hand with full range of motion. Keep you all posted.

Second, though I haven't practiced (or been able to as the only pair I had previously was inherited by a budding lad in the field who I dared not let slip through the cracks) with my poi for about three weeks I have been getting significantly better with my firebreathing. No high quality pics, but there is a watchable video that will be uploaded sooner or later by a friend of mine. I'm proud to say I've found one of the world's most amazing feelings, the Napalm Dragon's Breath. Just a quick spark and I had a full, steady stream of fire for a good few seconds and I can't really describe it but I'm an author so I'll give it a shot. Despite the fact that there was fire and chemicals that could kill me, with fairly high probability of doing so, connected to my mouth I was in an odd peace-like state of being. For those three or four seconds it was like the world stopped, I could hear the flame, almost feel the fire making me lighter. I do not advocate firebreathing to anyone, stuff is dangerous beyond reason, BUT if you're going to learn, learn it right and for the love of whatever you do or don't believe in master this technique.

Third and finally, brought my little sister along to my spin jam, had to watch her and she was interested. I don't mind, she's a good kid, although very quiet and reserved. She knows basic hula hooping, moving with it, turning in place or while moving and how to walk without letting it fall as well as controlling it up and down slightly. There were two amazing fire hoopers there last night and they were both really nice guys who took the time to work with her and show her what to do to learn and she picked up really quick. I have to say that its mostly in part to their kindness and skilled way of talking to others, but she's my kid sis so I have to say she's a good learning, and she really is. She wasn't comfortable with spinning fire just yet, but we're doing weekly jams now and she said with a week of practice she'd be ready. I'm so fortunate to have a sister I don't mind hanging with me like this at all and having her enter into the fire community is just awesome.

That about covers it, just needed to get that offa my chest and its 5am here, no one's awake this late(early) on a sunday except for me and the people I'm with. Anyhow I'll stop before I write you a book but I'll get back once I have pictures/videos or updates on the breathing or the Ifrit.

Perhaps, or perhaps its because I'm in new york and the birthday cake is at HoP and HoP exists in a temporal state of being that is a few hours ahead of real time thus making it my birthday there.

Hey all, new pics from my troupe's recent busking session, more to come including a full HD video of the entire performance from troupe start to finish recorded by a professional. We were very fortunate to have a traveling performer who was in town to be a guest on David Letterman and later Fallon and was kind enough to have her crew shoot for us. These are from one of our own, but I'm still pleased with them.
