My names Jeremi, And I'm new to poi...
I was introduced to poi officially a few months ago, and after lurking the forums for a little bit, and scouring my house for materials I could make my own poi out of I decided to give spinning a try.
My first attempt at spinning was on Thursday, A friend who I found out has been spinning for three years showed me some of the basics and i ended up walking away with the ability to keep my plains straight, do split time, and a simple two beat weave.
In the days since, I've made 2 sets of poi out of a few random, yet well suited things I found around my house, and have been spending any time not dedicated to college or work trying to figure out ways to avoid beaming myself in the head.

Favorite Movie(s):The Clerks Series, El Dorado, The Big Lebowski
Godzilla vs. a Star Wars Star Destroyer. Who wins? Why? Star Destroyer for the sole fact that Godzilla doesn't have the escape moves of han solo, or the catchy call like chewbacca.
Favorite TV show(s): House, Sportscenter
Plans for life in general: I plan on being a teacher.
Favorite Music Artists/Composers: Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Sublime, The Doors, RHCP etc..

I actually have heard of them, but their a bit too country for my tastes.
Favorite PF albums would be Wish You Were Here [Mainly because of the significance and mention of Syd Barrett] Dark Side, Animals, The wall, and Pulse.
My friend isn't on here, but she buys her toys from the shop.
The only thing I'm really having trouble learning that annoys me is butterflies. My poi always tangle and I cant get how they work without tangling.
I actually have heard of them, but their a bit too country for my tastes.

Your hand on top should be just a little bit in front of the one on the bottom.
Syd is the man. But you didnt mention Relics(if thats counted as an album) or Piper at the gates of dawn...

Why palms up? I do mine palms mostly facing in... and sometimes down...

Welcome...and when it comes to the direction of your palms facing-do whatever you find most comfortable. If you dont feel right doing something you most likely wont do it in the first place.

Dont stress too hard about planes in the early stages of butterfly, you actually cant do it with perfect planes.
If I start to not think my poi will still clunk because the heads are thicker than the room between my planes.
But yeah, you can still have planes that are close to perfect and not have them collide... but work up to that.

I actually finally figured out the butterfly this morning. I had some down time at college today so I just grabbed my poi and started to spin and work on it. I can get a butterfly with decent wall planes pretty much every time now, and I even managed to do a few one handed butterflies...
Thanks for the help, Once I put my top hand out in front a little bit it just came together really well.
Now that I've got the butterfly down, I've been trying to do it where one poi spins behind my back while the other stays in front, then continually switching them. If that makes any sense..
