Posted: Well, if that's what you meant, then I have none at the moment, but I'm looking to start with some LED socks then moving up to ball chain and led/glowsticks then eventually flame. Are the socks a good start?

I would say they are the perfect start, however, mine seemed to elongate unequally after spinning for awhile, which made them extremely annoying to use. I ordered a pair of "cone" poi from here a few days back; have not used them yet, but I suspect overall they will be easier to practice with. Also, because they have loop handles instead of nothing I am reasonably sure that practicing with them will be more constructive via the transition to leather handles on a chain you generally have with fire poi.
Now that I think about it though, the cone poi will not allow you to see the LED inside... But one review on them said this:
Quote: First impression: Love the single loop handle, very colorful, light shines through them very well, and you can wash them.
It all boils down to what you like, maybe rocks attached to slinky's?

Posted: I actually just finished ordering my first pair of LED sock poi, and I'm excited to get them. I think I want to work on arm/wrist movement then get into straps and chains. Seems like a more logical change to me, but I guess only experience will tell us that.
And yeah, I look innocent haha. A lot of people are surprised when they learn more about me

Posted: For practice I always used rice in balloons in colourful, non-stretchy socks. You probably don't want to use LEDs to practice with right from the get go, truth is you'll probably break them.
The cone poi I'm sure are quite fine also.
Welcome to HoP! Feel free to ask lots of questions.

Hmm... I can certainly try that method, I have a lot of mismatched socks at home!

Posted: If you end up going and buying some, toe socks can work a treat! They tend to be just the right length, all the others you'd have to trim or wrap around your hands.

Posted: Rice balloons? I've never heard of anyone using that combination. I've made my own poi filled with bird seed. They are the size and weight of my fire poi so practicing is close to actually spinning with fire .... close ... remember I said close.

Posted: I use pearl barley. About 200grams in each sock.
Death Note and Blood+. Yay!
Also, cookie dough flavoured ice-cream?
And you have not lived until you have tasted marmite.

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys. I made a pair with rice and balloons, along with two of my knee high socks. Seems to be working alright.
And you should find/try some of that ice cream! It's just awesome.
Anime is probably one of the most interesting things to me. It's part of experiencing another culture totally. What are your favorites?
if anyone wants to get me some marmite or vegimite, i'd be up for trying it.

Posted: Amusing intro =] Very nice comment on butts.
Personally for sockpoi I like a bit of stretch, I know plenty of people who simply can not work with stretch after having solid for so long, but I think it has a nice feel for beginners and def. lessens the impact of hook hits as well as keeping a wider frame which allows more air drag = slower moves = easier practice. For weights the best thing I've found so far are:
These are silicone stress/yoga balls you can find at your local department or fitness store, they are wrapped in spandex like a baseball and have a very dense core yet a great diffusing but not hugely elastic repulsive force so even though it shies away from hits it doesn't feel like something like a tennis ball would.
Light, big grainy material like beans usually work very well, but remember that the smaller the material the more compact it gets, which makes for a harder weight. (EG. Sugar turns into a wooden block.) Big balloons filled with a small amount of water also work very well.
As for LED ball poi from home of poi, I've not broken mine yet (though they are very riddled with scuffs) but I can imagine the loop handles on the ball themselves eventually degrading as the plastic gets older, in which case I'd put them in socks. ---
For LED vs socks. This is a very tricky question because I use poi as meditation, the light itself triggers a clarity within my mind that allows me to think freely. The thing you should realize is that there is no such thing as soft LED poi, and you def. want soft weights for a long time when you begin because even with soft weights if you practice a tricky move the same way until you get it for as long as that takes you'll get big bruises from repetitive hits even with soft weights... so yeah thats what I'd recommend. On the other hand, I'd also get some glow poi as soon as you think you're ready, it enhances the entire experience greatly and if you already have a move down then why not go celebrate it by showing it to the night? =]
