Hello lovelies
It's that time again...
WOODFORD FOLK FESTIVAL time!

Which means Circadia, our lovely join-in-and-have-some-fun-with-the-spinny-juggley-circussy-crew is on again, for the fourth fabulous year.

This year we are having a walk in and play UV garden and reggae dance party at night, as well as our usual open cabaret and fireplay. And balloon modelling (from puppies to party hats....) and card tricks classes and all sorts.

We are in a slightly different site this year.. closer to the front gate, where Klownsville was last year. But still should be airy and spacious for summer play.

Tickets and volunteer spots are available through the website.

(but sorry... all vol spots in Circadia are long gone...)

Well, I reckon it's going to be a good year too!
If anyone wants a Circadia program, which is like a festival within a festival... let me know and I'll email one.

ALSO after the intense rain/mud of last year, + the other woes of the world, ticket sales have actually been a bit crappy this year which is a concern. Woodford is a very established festival but as vulnerable as anywhere else to going under if the $$ equation doesn;t balance.
SO if ya love it and want to help promote it, get the word out there... I can e/snail-mail you great flyers and promo stuff.
Thanks!

What gave you that impression, Pete? Is that a rumour around the place or just a random wrong 'un?

honestly i dont really feel motivated enough to drive 3 or 4 days to pick up rubbish or wave a bright stick in a carpark for 5hrs a day, then get the circadia experience. id be more than happy to volunteer for circadia, i can imagine that would be a great experience, but evidently, not meant to be..

put me on the list for next year?

Gabe, I was reading that in the intro of the programme, is it as dire as they made it appear? I admit the idea of a less crowded and more intimate festival sounds fantastic, but not at the expense of the future of the festival eek

why does downsizing threaten the whole festival? are there ongoing costs that cant be cut down? eg long term contracts for 300 marquees that must be honoured and cant be re-negotiated?

I think a smaller Woodford would be a better woodford!

Well ya it is a bit more complex that having a few marquees in a field! (We don't use many marquees actually, too fragile for our weather. Have to use metal framed structures called Hoeckers, a lot more expensive.)

But more than that there are indeed large ongoing costs, many connected with actually owning the land. The first and most obvious is and paying mortgage and the rates. Then essential infrastructure costs like water purification and sewage treatment (we are not on town water/waste systems), electrical infrastructure(ditto, we don't just 'plug in' to existing 3phase systems (though we are putting lots of money into developing large scale solar that will feed back to the grid), drainage (we get big storms up here). Then things like road and land maintenance, weed eradication. Lately, legal fees to do with getting our zoning changed so we can have multiple smaller and community events rather than trying to manage everything from just big one we run ourselves.

For current expenses, we are contracted to pay thousands of performers and production people. A large event like this is like steering a tanker.. ya can't just slam the brakes on or phone a few hundred acts up and say 'oh we're a bit down on ticket sales so don't bother coming!"

When you have suppliers and people booked months in advance on projections from previous years, that you have to pay out no matter what happens, a sudden and unprecedented downturn in sales will catch any enterprise out. And yes, we do have a 5 year contract with a major hire company for structures, chairs, rigging, tables, staging, scaffolding.. more stuff than we need to run bubby juggling events, that's for sure!

Having said all that, 'downsizing' of itself isn't necessarily a threat ..in fact the festival has been smaller the last few years than the peak of (will check exact date, somewhere around 2005). The problem is cash flow deficit ... meaning that an organisation has to either beg for credit or sell assets to cover the gap. Yeah, credit is what we are currently relying on. But the climate is not good for that and the figures are not small.. not like CG or Uberoz... 120 people x a few bucks. The figures are in the millions and percentage slides on that are the sort of figures that banks can feel inclined to foreclose on.

If it got dire, we could of course sell assets... which means the land. Depending on the figures and the urgency factor of who is foreclosing, part or all of it. Which is not the end of the universe but would be a great shame and waste of energy and potential.

As someone who has been to 16 Woodford festivals, been part of the growth and felt the power of that land, and the 100000 odd trees we have planted, the imagination and effort that has gone into it, I would rather keep it in trust as the most extraordinary asset for future generations, for all sorts of wonderful uses we can't even imagine yet.

Went up on site yesterday and it looked AMAZING!!! So much stuff set up, everything green and glowing.. and a decent weather report for the festival clap
(though rain forecast for the days before). (Bleh. Had enough bloody rain for a while. Though it IS good to settle the dust).

I am starting to feel quite excited!

See lots you all up there I hope...

but... all I have to do now, is pack... and knowing me, I should prolly start now, cos I'll no doubt procrastinate my way out of doing anything about it, till boxing day...
