Here's the situation: As I made a big deal about this past July, I was given an offer from the University of California, San Francisco to start my fellowship on January 1, 2009. My residency ends on June 30, 2008.

I gladly accepted this and then promptly made plans for my (sorely needed!) six-month hiatus between residency and fellowship. This includes 1) Running a camp for Burning Man '08 2) My trip to Australia 3) A number of other personal commitments, shorter trips, and other plans.

Basically, I have worked HARD these last seven years. I'm exhausted, both physically and mentally, and I could really use the break.

My future boss just called me 10 minutes ago to tell me that one of his fellows has decided to leave the program to attend to her family (she's pregnant) and that he now has an opening for me on July 1, 2008 (I wouldn't be able to start precisely then because I work straight to June 30).

So that would mean no Australia. I could still go to Burning Man but probably wouldn't be able to run a camp. And no long break to regularize my sleep schedule and everything again. No cooking classes, no poi classes (I haven't picked them up since last Burning Man redface), etc.

So... now I'm between a rock and a hard place. On the one hand, I was really counting on this six-month break and I've invested both a lot of money and emotional energy into planning various activities, both leisure and educational. On the other hand, I understand that as a program director, he would really rather that everyone start on July 1 and not be staggered by six months and I feel some pressure to cancel everything.

I'd be heartbroken if I had to do this, but on the other hand, I want to be on my program director's good side, too.

He has assured me that I could still start on Jan 1 2009 and he has told me to think about it through the holidays.

help

What would you do?

I live two miles from lake ontario, less than an hour from the finger lakes and an hour 1/2 from lake erie and niagara falls. *shrug* Our lakes don't count cause they aren't the ocean and have that smell, evidentally.

What if..you came here and doc came here and then it is right in between and we don't have any killer tigers or cougars on the loose. The moose we did have went home last year. wink
That would be a right smart compromise!

Oh but wait...we still don't count cause we aren't australia! tongue

No we don't count but Doc could get a short layover in Milwaukee at Mitchell on his way to SF, the plane (looks like the orville brothers plane) hanging in the atrium-my grandfather built that. nudge: I live near the airport-sorta

A girl can hope right

Sooooo, someone let the cat out of the bag because they didn't want to be upstaged by the San Fran tiger?

That's funny! ubblol

You know you did it as a ploy to attract the doc!

Nah I would've let something else out, fun, not dangerous...but they caught him so it's safe for doc to have a lay over here...it'd be fun, I promise...it's not fair no one visits the midwest *stomps feet*

FTR-We already have a good four inches of snow on the ground-started at 9am and it's 1pm and it's supposed to go 7pm, driving will suck

But it's no reason for Doc not to schedule a lay over here

I will *NEVER* be able to "visit" the Midwest. I was born and raised there. When I go to visit, I will always be "returning to."

And I hate doing that.

So sorry, faith... time to head West, young lady!

Maybe a layover was cheaper? I don't know. I'm isolated and lonely bounce

Or maybe you wanted to see our international grade museum or really cool art museum...or see (again international grade) zoo with tigers that do not escape...

And we get some pretty nice concerts

But fine avoid the midwest like the plague we are smile
