Great! (Windows only, so no good for me, but good otherwise).

There are a few other things you can do: monitors often stay on standby when the PC is off (I admit I'm guilty of this myself), external hard drives are on, etc etc.

On my computer I have power adaptors that use power all the time unless they are turned off at the wall: my speakers hard drive laptop charger etc. It's always good to turn computers off at the wall then they are not in use.

I try to turn mine off at night at least, but its because they blink ominously at me. Now I have a better reasoning.

Is it the Truth?
Is it Fair to all concerned?
Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships?
Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

What? shut down my computer? are you kidding, it's one of my main sources of heat. Ok maybe that's a little over the top and completely invalid in the summer, but over the course of the day I notice enough heat coming off this thing to not have to turn other sources of heat...and that I'm not kidding about. Don't believe me? put your hand over the vent at the back of your computer and feel the heat coming out of there, that's where that 200W/hour is going....into making heat.

Granted, I do shut this thing off at night and when I go out, but on average it's running 12 hours/day, seven days a week, but an even worse offender IMO ( I haven't run down the numbers yet ) is my cable modem. I can warm food on this thing , I'm not making this up either, as I type this, there's a pot of chicken fried rice sitting on the thing ( I don't have a kitchen....it's a long story ) so in about an hour I'll have a reasonably warm breakfast.

Problem is..this modem doesn't have an off switch, it's designed to be on forever, which kind of freaks me out in an appliance plugged in, generating heat fire hazard kinda way, so after shutting down the computer, I hit the switch on a power bar to turn off the whole system. For some strange reason, this computer used to turn itself on in the middle of the night..now it can't. ha!!! take that self determined appliance.

It would be interesting to post a comparison of various household appliances and their relative power consumptions, just to get an idea of how bad taking a hot shower, running a clothes dryer, and using an ( electric ) oven stack up when compared to, say light bulbs or stereos.

Stout, I'm the same: my computer heats my office. This winter we've used almost no heating (I'd say we've used about 40 hours since we moved in last September).

I heard something about routers the other day: they are designed to run on 12a but 18a adaptors are cheaper or something so a study found that 7 out of 10 routers were running at 18a. I guess that is the reason for the heat - mine is the same, it can get to the point where isn't not pleasant to touch because of the heat.

I dunno if anyone is interested but there are alot of (U.S.) appliance use information on
https://www.energy.ca.gov/efficiency/appliances/

and at

www.energystar.gov

might be a start.

The computer stuff, last year we used PWB's two pc's to heat the entire upstairs floor, which is also where we kept the reptiles.
This year they aren't on at all and yet it is almost as warm up there, which is really odd.

When I was growing up I was always taught that it is bad for things to plug 'em in and unplug them, etc. Now we have everything on strips that we just turn off...well, except for the fridge and the washer/dryer.

ooo, good topic. The school I'm working in at the moment is doing the 'live simply' campaign over lent. On monday I'm talking to my form about reuseing carrier bags, something I'm pretty pasionate about. (Next time you go to the supermarket have a look at how many bags are being used up, all at the same time at the checkout. Thats just one supermarket in a 2 minute time period. Pretty shocking actually).

Anyway, the live simply website is here if you're interested. I think its meant to have some good information on it. live simply

On the same note of computers, think about charging mobile phones and mp3 players etc. Most don't take more than half an hour to an hour to charge. Yet we tend to leave them on charge overnight. Some people leave them on every night. All that power is still going through the line, even once they're fully charged. There's loads you can do to make a difference

We used to be able to recycle plastic bags too - they make garden furniture from them.

Now that we have to pay 15c for every bag though, people try to hang on to them for longer. Or not use plastic bags at all.

hmmm... yeah, i think mine already has quite good settings on it too, maybe that's why it doesn't apparently seem to be doing anything, i usually hibernate my laptop anyway when i'm away for even an hour or so, but i forgot the other day, and i thought that in the past it hibernated itself in that situation.... only it didn't, hence my confuzzlement... will give it a few more days and see how much energy i can save in a week too smile

I'd do this, but I don't use my computer enough... Sits in my room, and gets maybe... 5 hours of use a week. But I'll keep it in mind if my computer use goes up!
