fantastic corsets/dresses and i love them to bits, i'm getting a few of the items there for my prom dress, but was wondering if anyone on here owns a corset and could give me a bit of advice? i'm gonna be wearing the corset after my prom, but not for waist training (not yet anyways, dont know about the future)

help please?? thanks biggrin

ummmm...........anybody have any suggestions as to what i can put here?!

What kind of help are you looking for? I can't get on that site right now, so I'm not sure if you are talking about just a corset or you're talking about a "good" corset.

A good corset you will be able to wear in comfort. It shouldn't cause you any pain but still give you the support you need. You will need to use a little different breathing techniques. You just don't have room for big deep breaths.

My biggest problem is that I can't lace myself up in one. I always have to get someone to lace me up, which isn't a good thing because I live alone. umm Never had a front lace one though ... I wonder I could get the correct support with a front lace?

What she said!!! ^^^

Couple more sites for both of you...depending on what you're looking for and the purpose.

Gidg...the ren site has front lace one's...I have only had a back lace so I can't say whether the front lace one's would work for you or not!

I have a front lace and a back lace. The front lace is fine for me but then i'm fairly small in the chest department so don't need quite as much support.

I've always gone for Vollers corsets but it depends on your style and how much you want to pay for it. For more comfort I'd recommend going for an under bust one, and also make sure you break it in by wearing it around the house a few times before your night out. It'll make you a lot more comfortable when you wear it for longer periods of time. smile

well, the kinda info i was looking for is how much you would recommend paying for a decent corset (the one i want is £125 i think)? how often you wear it? should i 'break it in' first before i go out? how long should i wear it for at a time?

also, it sucks that you live on your own and dont have anyone to help you, i've got people here to help me get into it so i should be fine on that bit.

thanks for the other links fyrespirit, i'll take a look at them biggrin thats also the other thing that i was wondering about, everyone is saying that if you have a smaller chest then it may be a bit more difficult to find an over bust corset to fit right, my measurements are 36-28-34, do you think i'll have a decent chance of finding some that fit good easily??

ummmm...........anybody have any suggestions as to what i can put here?!

tip: I bought a sturdy corset from Primark, no idea whether they're stocking them again. It was £8 and I snapped it up as soon as I could. It's red satin and fits perfect. It's also quite comfy for general wear.

I spent a fair amount of time shopping around for an affordable corset (anything below £80), without much luck, so you can imagine I was quite surprised.

If you do consider buying one, then make sure its a tad smaller than you. Roughly 2 inches less of your measurements. I surmise you intend to wear one with intention to reshape?

Otherwise if you are strapped for cash most of the time then maybe you should consider DIY. Flimsy bodices on sale pretty much all over the place can be modified with steel boning. If you're a textiles buff then this should't be too much trouble smile Just make sure the material can withstand that much pressure.

Good luck smile

well, yes, i do intend to reshape, but not majorly, 4/6 inches maybe?? im amazed that you found a decent corset in primark, what was it like?? boning etc? im not much of a DIY girl, so its pretty much buying them, or getting someone else to make them for me.

It was steel boned, the support was just like the expensive ones I've tried on but been too skint to buy (plus being slightly larger than other women and not a perfect 10 I was even more chuffed). Time will tell what wear is, but it's already done me well at several parties.... maneuvrability is a bit of a problem sometimes though.

Reshaping as I said, 2 inches at first from your initial measurement. When your waist has adapted (time can vary as can diet) then go for another 2 inches.

Also research further afield if you do get the temptation to buy from fairgothmother.... I never liked the price. Consider buying from the US, they'll definately be more choice aswell as cheaper rates. Ebay tends to sell them too.

well, the price there isn't really a problem for me, if they're good quality then i'm willing to pay that much, since i'll be wearing it quite a lot. also, other corsets i will be getting are gonna be paid for by the ATM (aka my boyfriend biggrin) who has said he doesnt care how much it costs aslong as i like it and appreciate him for buying it smile (which i do a lot)

thanks for the info on how much i should reduce at a time, how long, roughly, do you think i should wait before going for another 2 inches?

ummmm...........anybody have any suggestions as to what i can put here?!

timewise it depends on your body and how often and how long you wear.

Also be aware that depending on what type of corset you get, you'll most likely have to dry clean. If you reallywant quality a well crafted leather corset will be easier (unless it's suede) to clean. I could always experiment with mine in the washer but Primark havent got anymore in stock atm :S so I could end up miffed as a result :S

hm..... fair enough then, i'm gonna be wearing mine about 4/5 times a week for how ever long it is that it feels comfortable, about 4 hours at a time i'd say. would that be ok?? :S yea, i dont mind dry clean, doesnt bother me, wouldnt go leather coz im veggie and dont do leather.

ooops...then don't check out the griffin-works site...they're all leather!!!

Most of all that type of stuff that I've had has been leather...seeing as how I've been raised on a farm and am really used to the leather and meat lifestyle...

But to each their own... hug

You really might benefit from checking out some of the Renaissance sites...they usually have alot of corsets and such...and by really shopping around...you can get the best quality, for the best price...

Oh...the one that I had I just usually wore occasionally for going out, or to events like the Ren Faire...not a regular thing.

*chuckle* well... I wasn't trying to suggest that I wanted you all to pass from oxygen deprivation... rolleyes

it's my understanding that modern corsets are designed to mimic the "look" of the fashion of old while having little, not to "train" the body's shape as they were used in times past. that is, they look nice...
