Hello everyone and welcome to PLAY FESTIVAL 2007!!
Please forgive me for the lack of info, I have no computer to use and it'll be a few weeks more until I'm able to update it more often. I'll come back and put more up as and when I can.
Hopefully most of this info you'll have gotten from our newsletter, if not sign up to it on the website now! www.playfestival.co.uk
We had a wonderful 5 days last year and can only say that 2007 will be even better!
Thanks to everyone who came last year and who gave us feedback on what they thought of the festival, we've taken all comments on board and hope we can make the festival one that you'll enjoy even more than the last.
The dates for this years festival will be Wednesday 25th - Sunday 29th July and we will be at the same venue, Fordhall Farm in Market Drayton, Shropshire. The tickets will be £35 in advance and £40 on the door, that will include most workshops, 4 nights camping, the shows and other entertainments during the festival
We have lots planned for this years festival, more areas to play in with the emphasis on getting everyone involved, we will have a proper go at the world record after last years attempt didn't go so well (although it does look awesome on video!!!) and of course the usual abundance of workshops to keep you all busy in the day.
We'll have two stages this year, the main stage/tent and and nice little caberet tent, a solar powered cinema, a PROPER bar & food tent and a few more folks selling the stuff you want to buy (even if you don't realise it yet! heheh)
New for this year will be the PLAY HOP Amateur Performance of the year. It's a little competition we've come up with that can be entered by anyone for any type of performance. No more than 4 minutes long with a cash prize for the winner and the chance to feature on the next PLAY DVD. As you might guess from the title the event is sponsored by HomeofPoi.com (who have proudly given us the prizes for our games over the last two years). More details will follow soon...
The DVD of last years festival will be out at some point, probably exactly at the time we plan it to come out
Focusing more on spreading knowledge to learn the arts than the last DVD and we're sure it'll knock your socks off!

Ahh right about the loss of a horseshoe tent. I thought that it would be the main big tent that was cancelled. TBH, in retrospect, I think the size was about right for the amount of people. I just remember on the Sat night renegade, having to stand outside as people were in the doorway. There was plenty of room at the back, it was just there people not moving from the doorway. *shakes fist at people in the doorway*
I now see why there was only one toilet place. I know I *really* wouldn't like to help push a big tank of communal poo on wheels from out of the mud
As for your questions;
When I looked at the workshop list.. I thought were were too many. But it didnt bother me as I go to these events to see my friends, not be taught how to do something I could grab someone later on in the year and ask to teach me instead.
As for the fire.. People didnt spin (IMHO) because the fire spinning area was miles away round the back of the main tent. I didnt know where it was until the Saturday night, and didnt see anyone spinning fire at all (other than the shows).
Stalls: Yep, the food was pricey, but unfortunatly, this is the way with "festivals" even if it happens to be a festival run by your friends. The stall holders say what prices they charge, not your friends.
TBH, Id still be happy with a BBQ stall run by volunteers, where the prices of the food, was the price it was bought for (including bottle of gas/ ketchup/ plates/ serviettes/ etc).
As for shows and bands, would it be worth having an open sided (or even just partly) tent, so the bands could play to people outside too? I know that in other festivals, the attendees have been asked to go support the bands by going in the tent, but when the public are in there, there isnt any room to spin. At least with open sides, the band could see people were listening to them, and there would be enough room to spin in.
Still, you did do a brilliant job. I hope you didnt think I was having a go at you

Glad I broke myself on the Sat, rather than earlier... but now can't practise things I learnt before they seep back out of my brain/muscle memory ;o)
and I'm a bit disturbed by jo's pic of Mech molesting Chutney's boobs...

I also didn't spin any fire all weekend. i think mostly it was because i didn't feel like it but also because it was so, not 'out of the way' cause it didn't take that long to cross from one side of the field to the other, but because it seemed very 'out of the action' if that makes sense? and of course the weather wasn't helpful...
Equipment stalls seemed good but there were only stalls of stuff i already had and were mostly poi orientated, i was really looking forward to buying a contact ball and some fire ropes this year but i couldn't find a trader that sold them, or maybe i was being blind? bbq was too expensive but it didn't stop me going back time and again loved the hurly burly cafe - gorgeous breakfasts - deffo hit the spot at 8 oclock in the morning and wasn't too expensive once you got your deposit back for the crockery.
Live music was just right but i agree with UCOF - if it's raining then people who want to spin haven't got a place to spin if there are lots of people already crowded in the tent watching the bands. BOOK JOE DRISCOLL AGAIN!!!

Nobody made anybody go to workshops, the more you have, the more chance of there being something one wishes to learn happening (note to self:- must learn poispeak instead of just sticking to clubswinging terms so I know what the workshops are about).
There was fire spinning happening, though I don't think it was quite as far away from the main tents as was intended. I reckon you might have to blame hyperlights (and glow toys in general) for the lessening in fire spinning...
No and no, food-wise. (I didn't get new toys, but those stalls seemed good, don't think that the lack of sOddballs affected that badly at all). Being veggie I can't comment on the meaty stall (except yay for organic produce with minimal food miles). Hurly Burly were either expensive or their portions were way too small, whichever you prefer. Plus their range was limited (how many times did I look at the menu to see that pizza there, and Moroccan chick pea stew on Wednesday then again on Saturday? Do these guys only have four recipes?), and there wasn't always a vegan option. Having said that, their cooking was good..
My only comment on this is that perhaps the renegade could've happened on Friday night, the main tent on Saturday was all lively and fun party, folk were chilling, others were spinning/hooping/juggling, there was twister and limbo on stage and general silliness. Then all of a sudden the atmosphere got snuffed by a whole pile of folk coming in and sitting looking at the stage..
Oh no, I have another comment.. I'm old and jaded and cynical, and I've seen many many circussy shows, and I'm hard to impress. The main show on Saturday was the best juggly convention show I've seen in a very long time, no filler acts and plenty of variety, spot on folks!!...

Workshops - Too many/too few? I didn't schedule any on Weds or Sun to avoid people missing too many, but on the whole every workshop was really well attended, but did it cut down on actual play time?

Fire - Distinct lack of much fire spinning as far as I could tell, also lack of campfire really (I was really surprised to see a photo of one burning - didn't think it had been lit the whole week). Was this due to the weather or is fire just passé?

a few thoughts...
There could have been more bins - I know there were two recycle points which were great, but there wasn't too much in the way of normal bins for landfill rubbish. I suppose this meant we all had to be more aware of where our rubbish went (probably a good thing) but still it would have been a helpful thing to have.
The fire shows rocked and I was gutted about missing chimeara in the rain. Fenfire were good too esp. the Kraftwerk stuff
Missing the main show from bricking it backstage...looking fwd to seeing the dvd and seeing Meg's and Durbs' acts (which looked awesome from what little I saw of them)
No fire - well there was loads of glowy stuff which was good to see but still would have been good to see more fire. Did think the fire area was a little out of the way though.
Renegade on the Friday night would have been good.
Big hugs and thanks to Dunc, Rob, Mech, Strugz, Ros and everyone else I forgot for making Play happen.

A hell of a lot of staff workshops. This year was Staff year. However, when you get amazing staffers there like this year, then i suppose that is what happens.
There were a lot of "missing" workshops. I felt we were missing a liquid/body popping workshop and a club swinging workshop for sure.....I also missed a fun dancing one, however the penetration, titillation and stimulation workshop did amuse me greatly. Especially Chutney and Fraser (you did me proud!) I also really missed the warm-ups a la "my name is Joe"...
I also think there should have been more than one toilet point and more rubbish points...Although given the weather warnings i'm not suprised the toilet people didn't want to risk it...
I didn't even make it to the fire area. Not quite sure why. Think it might have been the cider.

Workshops were great. I only went to a few myself but the list looked very impressive and it was all put together very well. Thanks to derbs for that, well done.
Was great Having Nick Woosley Teaching some workshops, his way of explaing poi is great and makes it all seem so easy. The super looping workshop was great fun!
I haven't spun much fire this year at all and haven't had much of an urge to so i didn't try and find the fire area at all. I did how ever get told that it was just under some power lines and someone nearly hit it with a staff throw?! But i think the layout of everything was very good this year and it would have been had to find somewhere where it could have been far enough from everything.
I was a bit upset with the fact that oddballs wasn't there because i was looking at getting a contact ball and a Flair bottle. I know they sell them on site that is. The Poi bus was great and they are always happy to help. Great guys!
The rainbow dragon? think thats what it was called was great and a nice choice of poi there.
As for food, i did find the BBQ quite expensive so i only got one bacon roll from there all weekend. I did however go morisons and buy a hot roast chicken! hummm that was nice. Didn't go near the vegie stall so can't comment but the bar was a great idea! that was good!

Fire - Distinct lack of much fire spinning as far as I could tell, also lack of campfire really (I was really surprised to see a photo of one burning - didn't think it had been lit the whole week). Was this due to the weather or is fire just passé?

Stalls - The traders were happy, were you? Good choice, prices etc? (I personally thought both food places were a little pricey, but then it was also very good...)

Shows/Bands - Not enough live music / too much? Same for the shows (including PHAPPY - Play & HoP Amateur Performance of the Year for whoever asked what it stood for

Food - I also thought it was too expensive. I would've liked to try some of the veggie stuff, but a fiver for a small plate full (and also on single use plates...) was quite expensive. And £3 for a single sausage in a bun was a bit much, too.
About the lack of people to run stalls etc, I'd sent an email to volunteer and got a reply that I'd hear back but never did, so unless I was the only one who didn't get to volunteer there might be a big enough group of people to run more things. Like the bbq UCOF mentioned
About the lack of camp fire: the site rules said there were none allowed, so maybe that's why? "Camp Fires & BBQ - No one is allowed a camp fire, Sorry!" and "Any fires found burning will be extinguished upon discovery by a member of the Play crew."
By the way, I agree with Aimee, it would be nice to enforce the no smoking inside, no glass bottles, no shoes in the tents etc a bit more, or to just not have the rules (at least for the glass bottles) if 50% of people end up doing it anyway and nothing's done about it, but in fact there's recycling facilities put up for them. Well, at least I felt a bit silly for having filled stuff from glass bottles into plastic ones before going to PLAY.

I loved the workshops spot on guys I was a bit gutted there was no 2 ball workshop and a couple I wanted to do clashed but that was always gonna happen with the amount put on. I did like that all seb's were indoors

It was a bit irritating that the carpet / flooring material in the main tent and the big dome didn't go right up to the edge of the tent, this meant that the prime place for sitting down and watching was entirely spazzed up by the wetness of the ground, so people would sit about in the middle of the tent, in the way of the playing and such like.
It's nice at bristol in that everybody brings their camping chairs and leaves them around the outside of the main tent, then as the evening progresses more and more stuff and people get garrisoned around the sides...
I thought it was funny that the toilet closest to the main tent, all say two meters from the toilet furthest from the main tent, always ran out of toilet paper first. Next time, maybe load that one up with the most toilet paper...
I thought renegade was fine on saturday night. I wasn't really prepared for it, cos I wasn't boozing that night. But otherwise it was a good night to have it. I think renegade should be on the last night, cos then, like a good night of drinking, you can regret what you did the next day, and run away before you have to face the consequences.
