it has been discussed indeed very many times, but i have an answer that will solve the problem for all time... the chicken arrived in a poof of smoke with the egg hanging out of it's bum. Ther you go debate over, chicken/egg solved, poof of smoke unexplained and mysterious, but that's a whole other topic....

So do fish.

It's a flawed question, because it can't be answered until you have fully defined the values of the nouns (or variables in mathematics/computing).

Is it an egg that has been laid by a chicken, or an egg that will become a chicken?

Also, are we assuming a scientific evolutionary model, or that of creationism?

With the evolutionary model, and the egg being one that has been laid by a chicken, then the chicken had to come first.

There were no eggs laid by chickens until some things that were not chickens produced young that would classify as a chicken.

You'd have to get hold of the DNA for all modern chickens, and find out what they all have in common, to define at what point those DNA sequences appeared, and the first chicken hatched.

With an evolutionary model and the egg being one that hatches into the first chicken, then the egg came first. The parents were not chickens.

Creationism? As far as I gather, 'God' put all the animals on the planet at once, and told them to get busy with it.

He may have had an omelette previously though, and decided he needed something to produce eggs tongue

You aren't thinking or really existing unless you're willing to risk even your own sanity in the judgment of your existence.

Well, f*** a duck!

Not that into it, dude.

Cool argument but personally I like to leave some mystery in life. Don't want everything explained away.

As far as the debate of evolution or 'God' goes, I'm pagan so I believe in nature and recognize the divine in every thing and every one, not as some absent sky god that I just can't relate to.

No no no its the chicken that came first. first came the single celled organisms which eventually turn into an animal capable of laying eggs, then the chicken/egg cycle starts.

Chicken first (somewhere along thew way), then egg - then the familiar cycle began afterwards.

Well, f*** a duck!

that could be an explanation, a chicken is in fact a hybrid of a mysterious other entity and a duck, so the egg came first...

although i still think you're all underestimating the importance of the poof of smoke.

Nevermind though, there's plenty of other threads that skully pointed out, in which this debate can be continued in greater detail....

but many animals lay eggs before there were such things as chickens. birds evolved from dinosaurs, that lay eggs. so surely egg first?

The search engine can be a very confusing tool. It can also be very flustrating when you know something is there and you are searching for it and can't find it.

Well that's what I found until.... The wonderful Bovril posted [Old link] thread, which helped me out no end.

Yay Mr Bovril! bounce
