I'm a 3D crafts studant going into my second year of college in september.

I have this summer project that I'm meant to be doing. I've been off college for roughly seven weeks now with another 6 weeks ish before I go back. All I've done is written my name in the front of my sketch book..

Am looking for help not from just the arty people but others as well.

I've been given a list of words, and have to choose 25 out of them.

group

synthetic

natural

dull

light

harmony

discored

dense

fragile

tension

clean

taste

noisy

transparent

practical

decay

soft

hard

wet

hot

sharp

fine

new

smooth

crude

dirty

ugly

quiet

informing

open

linked

fluid

disposable

reflective

sticky

witty

Now with these words I have to make a shape for each one. Catch is, every word has to be the same shape. It's the texture/colour/smell that fortells the word. We can choose any shape. And with this being the only part of the project I've made my mind up about - I've chosen a cube.

For example the word wiggly could be done by making a cube out of jelly. Thats a very basic example and we are encouraged to 'think outside the box'.

I need your brainstorms on these words. What do you think of when you read them? What images come to mind? Do you subconsiously smell anything? Etc

Any further ideas are also appreciated.

If you all did a few words each - any ones you like, and tell me what you think, it would be greatly appriciated, as my brainstorming skills are rather lame. Would help immensly to get my creative juices flowing, and help me choose which words I'm going to use!

I also have no idea how I'm going to lay out my sketchbook, but I'm sure that'll come when I have more ideas..

Thanks to all. I'm looking forward to starting this. Think it could get interesting as I go further into it. Also looking forward to see how your ideas influence my own biggrin

For sticky, you could draw a freestanding cube made of twigs wich can branch out with leaves.

For quiet you could draw no cube and only a shadow and for noisy you could to cubes in cubes under cubes and over cubes, lots and lots of them...

I dunno, sound like quite a fun project!

Make not draw Blu!

Might also note that these little mini sculptures dont have to be permanant, as like rave said ice.
I just need proof that I've done them i.e photographs smile

I like the sticky stick cube idea Blue biggrin ubblol
That opens up the idea that a words can have several meanings (steming from the phonetic language thread)

For example when I look at the word 'crude' I instantly think of porn. Or boobs. Or willys. On display.
But from an aesthetics point of view it means badley made, rough, unfinished, or to describe a first prototype.

With just two posts I'm getting more and more ideas! Keep 'um comming!
More descriptive words. What do you associate with those words?

heres some ideas i have:

light- it could be light as in bright, you could put a lightbulb inside a box. or it can be light as in not heavy, you could make a cube out of thin pl;astic and fill it with air (or better yet helium)
fragile- you could use egg shells or other breakable things like china cups. im not sure how. maybe make a breakable cube and then break it
tension-make a frame of some kind and streach rubber bands over it
clean- a pure white box
taste- make the box out of food, like chocolate. or bake a cube shaped cake

you could also combine cubes. like the cube made of ice could be clean, hard, wet and fluid. or the cube cake could be taste, soft, hot, (fresh from the oven), disposable and decay (if you let it sit and go bad for a while)

good luck with your summer project smile

group - lots of little cubes that make one big cube! or a rubiks cube, or one of them puzzles that only make a cube by fitting them together one way...
synthetic - mmm... shiny plasticy, pvc...
natural - clay? naturally dried, it has a nice feel to it...
dull - grey, dismal, crap texture... thinking concrete car park texture...
light - feathery light!
harmony - if you can take photos how about putting a cube in harmonic surroundings, hard to explain, hope you get it.
discored - fractured... not a cube...
dense - lead/ other denser than water material sunken in a fish tank...
fragile - dried flowers, (although may be difficult to make a cube of them
tension - strings in tension, cube frame, string woven in between holding it in tension
clean - white swimming pool tiles
taste - fruity cubes, cut an orange into a cube shape?
noisy - i think of tv noise, it would be cool to have like a cube with tiny screens and white noise being played on each one of them, but that may be beyond the scope of a summer project...
transparent - well... see through...
practical - a tool box? a cubular swiss army knife
decay - mmm.. fun... take above fruity cube and leave it for a couple of weeks to rot....
soft - furry cube
hard - marble

uh... just a start and a bit random, i was brainstorming smile

Couple of ideas that came to mind...

sharp - made out of pins; maybe have an internal cube that the pins stick out of... not quite sure how it'd work but you'd end up with a kind of cube-shaped bed of nails

fine - get some very fine thread and wrap it round and round a cube so it looked really neat.

fragile - set up a cube shaped house of cards

disposable - stick some sporks together

linked - a cube made out of links like poi chains have. Or chain mail. Or a cube made out of those molecular structure sets we had in Chemistry. Actually, thinking about it, that wouldn't work very well cos the atoms are spheres not cubes - it'd be better if it was a cube made of cubes linked together.

linked, alternative meaning - I was thinking about the links between tv programmes. You could have each side of the cube with a picture of a well-known link image (BBC1 acrobats, the old exploding C4 image, the even older test cards), and overlaid on top of the relevant one, phrases they often use as links.

If you were allowed to add words to the list, you could add 'chancy' and use a dice smile

Good luck!

could be i was thinking more in harmony with nature, but that's kind of difficult with a cube... an aesthetic harmony...i.e. having it somewhere where it doens't look completely random and out of place...

Aimee> maybe a good way of tackling the sketchbooks, is to group all the words (where possible) into pairs of opposites, then it's easy to think about and easy to present smile

i was gonna do some more brain storming, but my brain isn't very stormy today...

hmmmm, you could play on the whole double meanings thing for a couple of the words.

such as a cube balloon with a lightbulb inside it, surrealist style for the word 'light'.

or for 'crude' a crudely made cube with porn on the outside.

you could use a perspex cube like maus said and fill it with a few wisps of smoke for 'transparent'

For 'wet' you could re-use the perspex and fill it with gravel and sea weed and make it look like a fish tank, maybe borrow a friends pet fish...

'reflective' could be a mirrorball style cube, make set up like one of those perescope things, so what you look at isnt what you expect.

'sharp' could be a cube made from blades scissors razors and pins, real industrial stylie... but that could be quite dangerous to make.

or a box covered in ears made fomr clay or something. Ears with different peircings and earrings. that could be for noise or quiet. i just liked the idea of a box covered in ears.... biggrin

Reminds me of art foundation. I hate art education. To me it's supposed to be about expressing yourself, being emotive and getting your own message across in an unconventional way, and doing it all with your own particular talents.

I couldn't do that when someone set a bunch of restrictions. My best ideas were always so 'outside the box' they weren't acceptable, although I think they would have communicated the way I see the world a lot better.

Doing a project like this, I'd mostly come up with a bunch of obvious cubes made of something, filled with something, or covered in something, and get pi**ed off at not getting to twist things around and play with it much.

They should call art school advertising school. That's what you call communicating someone elses ideas.

We are pushed to go as far outside the box as possible, with every project - so long as it has an explenation to go with it smile

These are some fantastic ideas guys. Everytime I get bored of doing my sketchbook work (trying to get it done before i start making!) I look on here and it gives me loads of creativity and enthusiasm - thanks! biggrin

If the words theyself doesen't matter, just the sound of it and the smell, colours etc i can help you -i am little synestetic person (Synestetiker) like i can see the words when they are spoken or taste them...
Group: A red word full of bubbles and rubbery
synthetic: A big yellow streched sun
natural: Green, pointy, and taste like spinach
dull: Animalfood like dogfood or meat for cats
light: whiteyelloish with air
harmony: muffin
discored: redbrown, with knifes, and lever
dense: water, tomatosoup with salami
fragil: grey white, rubbery and cloudy
tension: black, streched
clean: grey ground, pointy with stripes
taste: darkblue with the smell of dogfood

i don't know if thats a help, but you are the artist who could maybe transform those ideas in a cube...
to get ideas you could try to read a word and write on a paper whats coming into your mind. write everything you are thinking of, the words don't have to make sense, just write everything down and maybe you get some really good ideas. it's like creative writing or just brainstorming.

Yummy idea is that!
I was thinking more along the lines of a cube with holes cut into each side. Meaning you can get into it because it is open...but I liek that idea much better! hug

Suggestions and ideas welcome.

Shall have to see about getting some pictures online...

Thanks to everyone who has given me a hand with this, you've all been fantastic help hug hug

Fluid could also be movement based, don't really know how you could work that though.

Or perhaps, fluid doesn'y hold its form on its own so a different shape altogether, tub of melted ice cream or something, or an ice cube???

Hmm...pretty pants i know, but it aint an easy one!
