That may be so, but are these people earning less than $2 an hour paying $100 per week in rent, and all those other factors such as cost of living?

Maybe they should go by disposable income?

Well... I guess I could now figure out how much you guys own. But seriously, if I got the 8.33 per hour that they say I do, I'd work 28 hours a week ubblol given what I actually work, 4.33 per hour is more like it! I suppose they do something with the tax?

Whatever it is, MiG is right and they should take cost of living into account. but I still think all us 1st Worlders will be pretty much better off than a couple of billion people wink

Wow that really is humbling though as stated by peeps previously the 'hourly' figure is somewhat generous. I wonder if they wanted you to enter your net or gross annual figure though.....

EDIT: After fiddling with the income figure till it nearly matched my 'hourly' rate I got -

If they balanced it out with my debt's too I'm sure I'd be way further down. If this is based purely on income and doesn't take into account the actual cost of living in various places in the world would owing more than you have make you poorer than someone who has nothing?

Let's relight this forum ubblove

14.38% with what i typhically make in a year. Allow me to note that anyone who makes what I typhically make in a year qualifies for welfare, food stamps, etc, and thus would make more.

With what I'm making *this* year, 12.39%

Debts and cost of living not withstanding, thats still pretty impressive. It also makes it obvious to me how much it takes to move between percentiles....

mmmm strange. As I currently have no income, I put in how much I have been spending this year which works out at UKP 4 a day. (lets not factor in debt cause it'll just depress me).

And on this figure it says that my hourly wage is UKP 1.04 an hour! Which is 27 hours a week - jesus, where do these guys work? And can I work there also - I'm sure they pay better than UKP 1.04 an hour!

Still got asked if I want to consider donating some money though.

I've not earnt a penny yet this year and i'm totally skint.

That puts me in the 'if you earn less than £100 we cannot calculate.....' category

Something to consider..

We are all comparatively rich.

We don't have to walk an hour to get fresh water every day.

We get to eat more than a cupful of rice every day.

Many people in the West live with no community, no social support above a giro to pay for GM food, alcohol to drown their sorrows and cigs to calm their nerves, and they feel scared everyday.

Richness has many attributes above and beyond how much cash you have in your back pocket. Richness of community, richness of culture, richness of opportunity.

(thinks this thread should be moved to social discussion)

No-one with access to the internet can be described as skint. We have fresh water on tap 24/7, and have a massive amount of food available to us. Not like "You have to grow your own food. If the crop fails, you die." which is what a depressingly huge amount of people in the world have to live with.

Even if you're so broke you're raiding the bins behind cafes for the sandwiches they throw out, at least you have bins that you can raid. Some people don't have that luxury umm

After much consideration, I find that the view is worth the asphyxiation.

I was just thinking... if you make $100000 a year and spend it all... are you poor? What if you spend $120000 and are now in debt? A common occurance for a westerner.

I think it comes down to 'options'. A 'poor' hippie living on the streets of New York still has many more options than a poor farmer in a third world nation.

Sometimes it makes me sad when Westerners with so many options pity themselves and call themselves 'poor' because of the choices they make. (Definitely the most conservative sentence I've ever written on HoP.)

I know that there are many people who are victims of cirumstance (heath, hurricane, crime, etc..) but it seems all too often that it's the folks with the $80,000 SUVs that are whining about being poor because gas prices went up a buck.

Well, shall we go?

Can we seperate needs and wants? Someone who spends $100000 a year obviously is spending a most of that on wants. Someone who spends $1000 a year obviously spends most of that on needs.

I good way of seeing how rich someone is in monetary terms to to calculate how much of the money they spend is on food (their needs).

Oh and any one who drives an SUV is rich end of debate. And if they start whining to me about the price of gas, well I'll be liable to say 'excuse can I jsut stop you there... thank you' and then walk off.

There is a great deal of poverty in the disadvantaged parts of Western cities, just because they can eat doesn't mean their live as any meaning. Isn't that the true meaning of richness?

Yes there are thousands (millions?) of people that struggle on a day to day basis to put food in their tummys (and I no way devalue their struggle), but I want to address the misconception that poverty is to sole preserve of countries outside of the 'West'.

Again, it goes back to opportunity.

Every child in America has the right to a free education (which costs between $5000 and $10000 per pupil per year) with free breakfast AND lunch included until they are 18.

I'm NOT saying that that makes everything else all right but it's certainly a heck of a lot more than someone who did not have these 'privelages' elsewhere in the world.

According to figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau in September 1996, 13.8% of Americans live in poverty. Many more are on the borderline. Poverty affects all ages, but an astonishing 48% percent of its victims are children:

* About 15 million children -- one out of every four -- live below the official poverty line.

* 22% of Americans under the age of 18 -- and 25% under age 12 -- are hungry or at the risk of being hungry.

* Everyday 2,660 children are born into poverty; 27 die because of it.

* Children and families are the fastest growing group in the homeless population, representing 40%.

And I'm sure the figures are *a lot* higher now since you had Mister Bush is charge.
