Hi all... I am a complete newbie to poi, fire twirling and anything/everything related. In fact, I'll only even see it in real life for the 1st time next Friday (making it down to the Moon Fest on north side of Brissie).

Anyway, this is me...

Name: Pat... but Pogo to those that know me well.

Location: Logan City, south of Brisbane, QLD, Oz.

Hometown: As above.

DOB: 17/09/1969

Age: 36 and counting...

Sex: Wouldn't that be nice?

Occupation(s): Computer Programmer. Worked for myself from home for 2 1/2 years, but have recently had to get a "real" job.

Favorite Food(s): Hmmm... pretty much anything, really.

Favorite Color(s): Green

Toys: Acoustic guitar, Classical guitar, 3 electric guitars, 2 djembes.

Hobbies other than the obvious: Music, Reading, Keeping fit (hmmm, not so much of the keeping fit, actually)

Education: Did Bachelor of Science majoring in Computer Science and Pure Maths. Then Grad Dip Appl Computing... then started a research masters, but gave it away when life got in the way.

Favorite Book(s): Have to get back to you on that one... The Anarchist was the last book I read, quite liked it.

Favorite Movie(s): Lots... Fight Club, Snatch, Lock Stock..., Finding Nemo, Pulp Fiction, Pay It Forward...

Favorite TV show(s): Don't watch tv.

Plans for life in general: (i.e. what you want to do when you grow up) I really... wish... I knew.

Favorite Music Artists/Composers: Lately... Xavier Rudd, Jack Johnson, JBT, Blue King Brown, Donavon Frankeneiter, Rob Sawyer, The Waifs... blues/roots stuff.

Favorie ice cream flavor(s): Vanilla.

Marmite, Vegemite, or Nutella? (please choose one...this is important as it is essentially this site's equivalent of stating your religion...we have religious wars, crusades, cathedrals to Nutella, all that.)

Definitely... vegemite.

goodness... the places my thread goes when I wander away...

so... if it's an "aussie", steakhouse, it should represent the greatest of aussie traditions... the barbie!! that's bbq... not the distasteful children's toy with the big... hair.

so... it should serve stacks and stacks of all different kinds of meat that are all indistiguishable from each other, cos they've had the absolute crap burnt out of them. all this served alongside a veritable smorgasbord of insipid, fizzy "beer", coleslaw and potato salad.

and it should all be served by blokes dressed in stubbies, bonds singlets and thongs (flip-flops), who scratch themselves with the bbq tongs.

Uh, oh...it's definitely not very authentic, then...cuz you can actually distinguish one thing from the other...and health codes won't allow either the singlets...or the thongs...or the scratching with the tongs...(don't know what stubbies are...don't think I've heard you mention that before)

Oh, well...if that's the case, anyhow...you wouldn't be a very authentic Aussie barbie-quer, either...cuz I don't think you burn everything to a crisp...and I somehow can't see you scratching with the tongs...

Anyhow...did I mention that I'm hungry?

ubblol they were talking about this 'aussie' restaurant you guys have been talking about on rove last night! ubblol rove's been doing his show from over there & they went to the outback restaurant!!

no offence to anyone who likes it - but it sounds so BAD! cheesy fries!? what the? i'm not even sure what they are! & 'blooming onion' - which looked so YUCK! (rove bought the take away one & gave it to his guests to try!) & he read out a few other things from the menu (which they stole of course!)...like 'the chocolate thunder from down under' (or something like that)...a dessert apparently! ubblol

do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and good to eat!

if at first you do succeed, try not to look too astonished!

Oh...the cheesy fries are just fried potato wedges with melted cheese...and they're yummy...and then the Bloomin' Onion is a sweet vidalia onion that's cut to flower out...and it's battered and deep fried and served with a few different dipping sauces...also very yummy...

And the 'Chocolate Thunder from Down Under' is a chocolate cake with chocolate sauce and I think it has chocolate chunks in it, too...is very much like a Chocolate Orgasm...

I'm sure none of that is very authentic for Aussie fare...but it's still really, really good...I'm just sure it would be a bit much if you're not used to the really rich foods that we tend to have over here...

But I must say the my favourite thing to have when I go is the steak and shrimp...they are spiced to perfection and the one I go to always cooks them just right, too...not overdone or underdone...

Damn, every time I come on this site I end up making myself hungry!!! ubbloco

Hmmmm - doesn't sound very authentic Ors-strar-lee-arrnn fare...

Authentic Ors-strar-lee-arrnn fare is one of the following:

1) REAL original traditional - stale bread and water (traditionally eaten while wearing black and white striped attire)

2) as per senor Pat - items of previously edible nature turned into charcoal by the judicious use of naked flame.

eek I'm starting to get a lil bit freaked out by the number of times I've heard that. I'm still haunted by the memory of one friend telling me that they sat in a bar after a gig with one of the band members thinking it was me (talking to them, indepth, for an unspecified period of time), before realising that it wasn't...?!?!

that; and being told on numerous occasions that someone saw me somewhere that I wasn't...?!?! or that they saw someone that looked just like me with different hair or something.

I think maybe someone's been cloning me... and frankly... the world's not ready for more than one pogo.

on the subject of "aussie" restaurants... it seems to me that truly authentic australian food would include menu items, such as kangaroo, goanna, barramundi, emu etc... and make use of traditional indigenous australian plants also... macadamias (yum), bush tomatoes, desert limes, quandongs etc.

but heck... most of those ingredients are really all that prevalent over here.

it sounds like the outback restaurants are a bit of a hybrid of what is assumed to be aussie tucker and southern american fare, designed to appeal to the local palate.

How rude!!! They can't have my Pogo!!!

The Outback Restaurants are all over the US, so it's not just the southern palate that they try to appeal to...and they really started out with their specialties being the steak and shrimp...and the Bloomin' Onion is what made them famous...is now a really big thing in lots of restaurants...with many variations on the name...which, I can't remember any of at the moment... shrug

The funny thing is tho that we don't actually deep fry onions that i know of. The only place i can think of that does it is Hungry Jacks and for you US people that is your Burger King francise anyway.
So you've made aussie restaurants famous of an american dish....... Hmmm..... me a little bit confuzzled.

Longing
by Matthew Arnold

Come to me in my dreams, and then
By day I shall be well again.
For then the night will more than pay
The hopeless longing of the day.

Come, as thou cam'st a thousand times,
A messenger from radiant climes,
And smile on thy new world, and be
As kind to others as to me.

Or, as thou never cam'st in sooth,
Come now, and let me dream it truth.
And part my hair, and kiss my brow,
And say My love! why sufferest thou?

Come to me in my dreams, and then
By day I shall be well again.
For then the night will more than pay
The hopeless longing of the day.
