I rarely used to get sunburnt. Warm, sunny days, I'd go pink, but not actually burn. But I've just come home (Australia) from Europe and I have been sunburnt 2 our of 4 weekends.

And I don't get it.

Is it likely to be because my skin isn't used to Australian sun and is now trying to get used to it again? Or just that it's decided to be really mean to me this summer?

Get the Factor 50 out and slap it on every morning as soon as you get out of the shower and keep on topping it up every couple of hours you are outside. Sunburn is not good. Don't be getting yourself skin cancer!

someone told me the ozone is a lot thinner there. i wasn't sure how serious they were, but now i'm inclined to believe them at their word. wow. or maybe it's seasonal? like your body is more used to producing protective elements in your normal summer? good thing to watch out for. thanks.

@dut: Yeah, the ozone hole exists. And it's nasty. I think Australia has one of the higher skin cancer rates in the world, now. not sure exactly how high that is, though.

I still reckon they're going to come out with research that a healthy tas is, in fact, good for you, as long as you don't go overboard - more pigmenty things to prevent damage.

it could be that your body has adjusted to the climate over here, and you will need to acclimatise again

*poses ready to dive into pool of sunscreen..... *

i was told the other day (and i havent tryed it) that if you have a bath with a Teaspoon of baking soder in it (for about a month), it puts a layer on your skin, and you dont burn, but do go brown. havent tryed it tho...

be careful with sunscreen, some people believe if you re-apply it a million times you will be fine, but it only works the first time or something like that apparently.
Which is why it is good to get the highest SPF as possible, because the higher the SPF, the longer you can stay in the sun... not sure how it works, and cant ask mum as she has disappeared

nope, most likely not.

Nah, never heard of it... although being able to be in the sun and not getting burnt would still be just as bad for you as getting burnt, as isnt it the rays of sun which give you cancer, not the burn?

i think its best to reapply as some of the lotion gets sweated off/washed off in a pool, so you may not be getting the full effect

Be careful Rougie, sunburn baaaaaad!! And yep, i guess your skin just has to get used to REAL sun again after chilly Europe.

You should multiply the amount of time you can spend in the sun without burning (this could be as little as 10 minutes!) by the sun protection factor of the sunscreen you're using, i.e. if it's ten minutes for you and you're using factor 15, you can stay in the sun for 150 minutes counting from the moment you went out (with sunscreen already on) - that's where the 'it only works the first time' comes from. However, it's wise to keep reapplying as it gets rubbed/sweated/washed off.

The length of time you can spend in the sun without burning is dependent on all kinds of factors, such as your skin type, time of day (the higher the sun is the more easily you burn), solar index for that day (that's the amount of UV radiation, check a local weather site for that, and newspapers will often tell you as well). Anyone know how to work out how long you can stay out without burning, is there a formula for it? Where's our resident mad doctor/scientist when we need him!? smile

yes! thats the one I meant.... but I thought it was the solar index mulitplied by the SPF of the sunscreen?
