Ok the bones of this is that I have to have an operation on Thurs (don.t worry nothing life threatening I know you're all so concerned wink)
Thing is I'm reeeaaally scared about the going to sleep bit.
Seriously those 5 seconds are all I can think about- oh and the whole "what if I don't wake" up thing *shudders*
Anybody had a G.A and can say anything to put my mind at ease?

Hey there!

You'll be absolutely fine! I hope the op goes well and everything's ok after that. I've been under GA many times in my short life (usually knee ops) and I have to say, I love it. It's weird but true! I'm always concerned about going under, but I love the come up! It's safe, and you'll be fine, and we'll be seeing you again soon, with out a single doubt.

hug Enjoy it! There's no point in worrying, cos worrying's a pointless activity!

I've had one. It was quite funny - I insisted on saying I wasn't tired (okay, I was only 9!!) until the second I was out smile

Apparently I said a lot of nonsense while waking up, too ubblol

I think if you're vitamin B12 deficient (usually happens to vegetarians/vegans who don't supplement their diet) you should let your doctor know though.

Ive been under when i was about ten... all I remember form it is waking up in a room full of pillows and soft toys (I want a room like that in my house) and then being made to walk down a spiral staircase before i had compleatly come round.

You'll be fine and dont worry about it it just feels like a deep sleep, u know one of those where you are sure you've dreamed but you're not sure what of... just enjoy it

I'm in. Have you ever been up a spiral staircase in a castle? Like, a really old castle? They are really steep and claustrophobic, and they have no hand rails.

Bizzarrely going up is worse than going down. I always fall over.

I have visited many, many castles.

yeh, thats really comforting! I had G.A. when I was about 11, but it was gas, which is now illegal as I was having my pre-wisdom teeth out (aparently my mouth is too small). I remeber it wasn't the nicest experiences, but waking up wa fine, I actually felt really good, not at all groggy after an hour or so. I've heard the the injection is better than gas anyway. Don't worry hun, you'll be fine!

I've never been under myself, but most of my patients report that the last thing they remember is sitting in pre-op. They don't even remember anyone starting the IV.

Midazolam is a wonderful drug that way. biggrin

I love it too, I severed some nerves and tendons with glass when i was doing the washing up (damn those pretty cockle jars - they make lovely tealight candle holders you see), i dropped the jar in the sink and silly me went to catch it!

had an op the next day, they told me to look up at this painting on the ceiling as they fed that wonderful stuff through my IV tube, and it kinda washed away - I remember saying Whoa thats so coooooooool...... then I was back in my ward bed, feeling like I'd slept the best night sleep of my life! Then the nurse came in and said Oh you're awake - your family is outside but they wantyou to get some more rest. I happily obliged and indulged in a few hours of snoozing. It was wonderful, especially as I didnt sleep that much then as my 5yr old was only 8months old!
I really need a hit of that stuff now - I only slept 4 hrs last night frown Maybe I'll buy a jar of cockles tomorrow ubblol

Okay so tomorrow is the day, and for some bizzarre reason my focus has moved from the fear of falling asleep, to the fear of looking scruffy. Well I'm going to be asleep aren't I... I can't even hide the bad bits, which is why I am now going through a ritual of tidying up my bikini line and painting my toenails. I also have a couple of questions someone may be able to answer..

Will they strip me completely naked?
Will they make me take my make-up off?

This is odd. I am really not that vain/superficial I think I'm just in a really weird mood...ah well, beats being petrified!!

what surgery are you getting?

they probably will make you take your makeup off but i dont think they srip you naked, they only need the bit theyre operating on to be bare... they will probably make you change into a gown and wash before hand

Never had a GA as such, but I did get given Ketamine once to have a tube removed. Now that was a seriously wierd experience. Sat there watching something which in all honesty should have been absolute agony and just giggling moronically at the 2, or 3 clocks floating around the wall. Double vision is a wonderful thing biggrin

Im sure you'll be fine, GAs are pretty routine these days and the risks are tiny.

You will, as BJ says have to change into a gown before surgery and they may make u take makeup off. But no, they wont strip you naked, they will just expose whatever part of your anatomy they are operating on the rest will remain covered and your modesty securely intact smile

gl but you wont need it, it'll be a walkover smile
