I took a pay cut of over £10,000 to get away from my job. I was in a very bad mental state and am now so much better for it, until it happened to me I never thought it would happen.

A job you hate for lots of money is by far the best option. Do it for a few years, then do the job you love the rest of your life, using the money you gained from the not so great one to top it up to a normal level.

That's my plan anyway. I'm not doing a job I hate at the moment, but it's not as good as what I want to do when I'm older and have paid morgage off etc. Early retirement is the way forward.

Short term, working a crap job with good money for a little while is ok if you are saving for travelling or something else fantastic but in the long term ...

Job you like for less money, definately. biggrin
As long as I can afford to eat and keep a roof over my head and the occasional trip to falmouth and the like then I'm happy!

You only live once, would you rather enjoy every moment of life that you can or waste your life being miserable but with a more expensive car or gadgets and other crap that you don't really need.

Saying all that, i would mind a job that means i could afford aerotechs!

I have done both...Let me just say that I was in a much happier state of mind when I did not dread going to work in the morning. When you truly hate your job all you can think of is how much you don't want to go to it the next day...that is no way to live....

The answer is fairly obvious eh?

depends what you define as hate. Very few people are in a position where they want to go to work in the morning because they love it so much. I'm not in that position at the moment, but one day I want to. For many years I've done as a hobby and enjoy something that a lot of people could only ever see as something they'd do for money. It is different when you're doing it commercially thou, it's like anything, the novelty wheres off when you have to do it as opposed to when you feel like it. That's why I want to move towards research, so assuming I can get funding then I chose the topic and how it's done. Not much money in research thou compared to a similar job which requires roughly the same training in a commercial environment.

I say if you hate your job, look for something else and then quit. If I hadn't I would still be there doing shitty paperwork.

Quitting is the fun part wink

I would rather be pennieless and happy, than rich and missrable.

My time is very precious to me, and i dont want to spend it unhappy in any way.

But, saying that, i do loath my job - but i am looking for a new one!

I chose hapiness and just did odd jobs for the past couple years. It was alot of fun just hanging around and having a good time but I really need some money now and got a new job today. I get to work in a convenience store! Yay! It isn't that bad though I don't have to cut my dreadies and that was my biggest worry about finding a job. I did have to cut my big orange beard though. frown It's weird having a naked face. So I guess I have to suck it up and work for the man but come next summer I should have enough money saved up to hit the road and back to happiness.

Well, I traded in my job as a bartender at a very popular dance club for a less-paying day job at Wal-mart so I could spend time with my ex-hubby, who worked days as well. Even though the money was killer, I grew to hate the same lager-louts and kandy-kids who came in and danced the night away, not to mention the succession of managers was always worse than the one before him/her. When I had enough of the "Blue Beast", and enough of my ex-hubby, I quit both and joined the Army. The money isn't as good as in the club, but as long as I am not in Iraq, I am rather happy with my job.

I guess my point is to go with happiness, and things will have a way of working out.

Happiness definitely.

I'm not going to settle into a 'career' until I find a job that makes me completely happy AND pays a reasonable amount of money (there must be one out there somewhere!).

What Flid says makes a lot of sense to me though, I will also be looking for crap jobs that pay lots of money in the meantime while I look and train for that one thing that will make me happy.

Oh wow, I have a plan! biggrin
