This past weekend, I saw my parents and showed them the poi stuff that I have been doing.

My 66 year old mother grabbed the chains and stood out in the yard for about 20 minutes trying to get the weave!

She even managed to get it on one side, which was cool.

(She is going to get a practice set for christmas from me)

Has anybody else here gotten their family into this?

I think my dad hates it. He hasen't said so, but I can tell from the tone of his voice over the phone, that he thinks that this will lead to me
-dropping out of uni
-going to live in the bush
-not believing in soap
-dying of malnutrition in the outback

Oh well, he'll come around, he usually does when it comes to my hobbies

No offence intended to those people who have chosen this path

I don't like living below the tropic of Capricorn..... and now I seem to be in England...... how did I get here???

my mother keeps telling me that she thinks that the comet tails and thge LED's that i have look much prettier!! so i guess that she is just afraid of me hurting myself... other than that, my dad thinks i'm completely mad (as he usually does) and my sisters are taking as little notice as possible! although i many convice my 16yr old sis to get into devil sticks as she has shown an interest....

its mostly mates that i've managed to convert... i have three now who are almost as addicted as me... although thats quite hard!!!

ok,

my mother has only seen me spin practice wicks and flags. Still, she seems supportive, while asking how many burns I have. She reminds me that I'm her baby

My brother has seen me and others in the family of fire . He is very supportive and understanding. This is odd, because he tends not to be supportive or understanding about much of what I do. Perhaps the fire has entranced him. One can only hope.

My father has never seen me do anything, but os supportive. I don't really think he has a full concept of it, though.

Lastly, my beautiful baby (3yrs) boy is all about it!!!!!
He has been my rock and comic relief.
In the begining he watched in awe.
Later he became very fire concious. Calling out for me to be careful and not get burned.
Now he is contantly asking to play with fire. He is drawn to every fire he sees. And best of all. He is safety-concious. I can totally trust him around the flame. (for the most part)
Ohh makes me soooo proud!

my mum goes off her tits when she sees me grab the kero and a lighter.

my b/f follows me wit a towel and stays way back.

my step dad has seen a performer do it near his ferry every friday night, so he knows what can go wrong and gets scared when i do it.

and i dont even think my sister knows i do it. LOL.

but as bender said- the pyros i know- are like my family... *awwww*

And wherever you've gone and wherever we might go. It don't seem fair. Today just disappeared.

well...

flynt showed me, her brother how to do it.

we have a sister who is dying how to learn how to do it (any one in darwin, australia want to give her lessons????)

my mum trys to do it. with the emphasis on tries...

my dad likes it but would never do it

our other sister wants to do it at raves and charge prices, but cant be bothered how to learn..

im currently teaching three of my cousins, who absoulutly rock the world with their learning capacity and skills.

my nan saw me do fire, and now thinks im famous...

ummmm, who else?

another cousin wants to learn how to aspirate, so i think we might learn together (carefully)

some one told my gran i do fire dancing, so she keeps on telling me about how she used to twirl a batton.

its nearly commonplace when i say 'im going out to light up' now days, last week i had to force a 9 year old cousin i was baby sitting into being my saftey.

its a family affair.
weird.

The first day i brought my poi home... and continued to bruise myself up lol... my lil sis (shes 8) was right there beside me with 2 skipping ropes in hand... doing the same moves as i was... although hurting less.. coz my practice poi at the time were the real deal lol. These days i dont hit myself... as much lol.. but my lil sis is right there beside me everytime i practice... with her home made practice poi (shoelaces and a chuppa chup plastic thing.. remember when they came with toys and you thought it was a huge chuppa chup)

Well thats my story

Why do you like to confuse me so?

My parents know I spin. They were worried at first. I've even shown my mom with fire once. My dad doesn't seem interested in watching. My brother seems indifferent, but my sister-in-law loves it! My sister organizes parades for the City of Detroit and often hires fire performers (breathers, jugglers, etc.) but is terrified by the thought that *I* do it. "Mike," she says, "these people are Clowns! Do you have any idea how hard it is to work with them? You don't want to be like them." My response was "Hire me, then. I'm reliable." She didn't think it was such a bright idea. (This could divert into a rant on the apparent lack of professionalism in the local fire community, but since I'm not a professional -- and it's off-topic -- I'll abstain).

My other sister thinks it's interesting, and her two kids (my nephews, 13 and 15) love it. I think, given their age, I might try to get them into it next time I see them.

The rest of my family just sees it as an eccentricity, maybe as a phase that will go away. Since spinning is sort of like riding a bike (once you know how, you're unlikely to ever forget), I doubt that's the case.

My parents never freaked and thought that I was going to drop out of school. They did make a few jokes about the fact that I learned this at college ("This is what a Masters degree teaches you?"). I think at this point, they realize that I'm not likely to decide to throw it all out and become a professional street performer, although I've joked that at least I have a back-up if medicine doesn't work out.

my family is great! mainly they use me as entertainment when their friends are over, but the are completely supportive of me and want me to do anything i want, theyre helping me get to NICA (circus uni) and i think they like being able to say that their daughter spins fire cos all their friends go 'wow, thats unusual!'
my older sister doesnt share their enthusiam though. sure she thinks its cool but she doesnt have any desire to do it herself and when it comes to circus she goes "that involves exercise, right?" then runs (sorry, walks) back into her well defined groove in the couch.
my younger sister is really cute about it, shes so interested and loves having me to show off to her friends, and i love teaching them handstands and stuff, but i think she enjoys watching more than participating.
so thats the lowdown on my family and poi, for a signed copy please send money to....

My sister bought a pair of practice poi but has not done very much yet and another sister took up devil stick.

My parents seemed to enjoy the fact that I do poi. At Chirstmas when I did a burn for my Dad he told my sister that he enjoyed it although I was 'Mad in the head though, always has been'.

I think throwing flaming objects in the air and around my body just confirmed to my Dad that I am the weird one in our family!

Come faeries, take me out of this dull world, for I would ride with you upon the wind and dance upon the mountains like a flame.
