Hello there fellow UK and Northern Irish Hoppers,

Today's the day (Thursday 5 May 2005) when you get the opportunity to express your views, opinions, irritations or support for government and how things are being done.

Are you going to use your vote or just let it go by?

Are you pissed off about our invasion into Iraq or the treatment of asylum seekers into this country?
(For the Northern Irish types) Do you want this country to become increasingly sectarian and extremist?

Please, Please, Please go out and vote lovely spinny peoples.
Even if you don't agree with the policies of the 'main three' then vote for someone in your consituency whose policies you do support.

Even if they won't get in, at least they may keep out someone worse (the BNP have been showing dramatic gains in the UK in recent years).

Visit this site and type in your postcode for your constituency details:
https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/vote_2005/default.stm

It won't take up much of your time - just ten minutes... but you can't complain about the country going to bits if you don't use your opportunity to change it.

Happy voting biggrin

And if you don't like any of the candidates tell them by spoiling your ballot paper - just go down there, get your ballot paper, go into a little booth and write 'you are all rubbish' or 'I want Kylie to be our leader' or whatever you like. They count up all the spoiled papers and declare them seperately. One of my dreams is that if spoiled papers had the majority they'd sack all the candidates and try again, and again, and again...

If you don't use your vote then you have absolutely no right at all to complain about the way the country is run.

I have a postal vote so I actually ticked my box over a week ago. Am feeling all smug now, but will probably be disappointed with the results!

I didn't know who to vote for so I just put a big cross next to UKIP to show I really, really didn't want them to get in. And I put a smiley face next to all the others to show goodwill. biggrin

I only just found the Official Monster Raving Loony party's website and found it hilarious. https://omrlp.brinkster.net/home.asp
Check it out if you're bored of everyone talking about politics like I am.

And yes, I did vote. Our polling station was in an old church hall and it smelt a bit.

"Take that, math!"

My voting card didn't turn up in the post today frown It's not like the council don't know I'm here or anything, I officially moved in (and informed them) on the 1st April.

I'm off to vote tonight after i finish work. I'm a first time voter, at 26...i can't really say i've been that bothered to vote in the past, but this time i think it's time to come out of the closet.

I hope that the number of votes increases thistime, and even if that pesky devil party get back in, at least more people will have voted against them.

VOTE TODAY...

Polls remain open in 645 constituencies until 2200 BST, with the first results due at 2345. It will not be clear who has won until early on Friday.

FRIDAY?! What CENTURY is it there?

Fox News tends to call US elections about 5 minutes after the polls open.

Don't you use some electronic system in America? We use bits of paper here. Takes a while to count them.

I think Sunderland South is the first to call it. Apparently last time they called it 53 minutes after the poll closed, a good hour before the next consituency called in. So if the polls close at 10pm and the bbc starts transmission at 9pm, we could be in for a long wait before we get any "real" news re: results.

Could be umm faced by the time i make it into work tomorrow.

Lord Sutch apparently holds the record for "most elections lost" and is also the longest standing party leader in UK history. Brilliant. biggrin

You're right NYC, it is terribly English to actually wait until the votes are counted before predicting the outcome biggrin

Ahhh Aled, don't you know that there is no such thing as hope?
Just dreams which will be crushed in the end. In other words... it'll be a cold day in hell before any of the leading political parties deem it appropriate to tell their electorate the truth.
