i heard a rumor from a VERY reliable source that 5 or so of the major U.S. fire tool makers are selling out to walmart.
which means that walmart will be selling fire tools in the near future.
how weird is that?

very very weird....it would mean that every kid can buy some firepoi or whatever....they will injure themselves and that will give us a very very bad image !

do you think there is really the demand anywhere for poi or fire toys to be sold in places like wal mart
either way its not a good thing - i agree with Nantheos - also it'll destroy so many private ventures and if we're not careful mean that we end up with dodgy stuff - would never want to buy something like poi from wal mart

Some dodgy fire poi have turned up in shops in manchester they are metal tubes with the thinest of chains, the cloth yes cloth not kevlar they wrap it in is held down by screws that are not covered so cuts are easy to recieve they lasted my friend one burn then he went mad!

i really don't think that we should worry about the safety of products made from walmart, remember that the US is the lawsuit capitol of the world. i think that nantheos nailed it, people are going to hurt themselves and give us a bad name.

i was talking more in the UK :P its happened before with other things and i wouldnt be surprised if it happened with poi - one lot classed as weapon or something stupid while a different group classed as toy :P the burocracy here is amazing at times.
but i would agree with spanner - its dosnt sound amazingly plausable (ohhh big words i must be ill). the consumer market for poi isnt that massive - especially fire poi.
*imagines christmat number 1 toy being fire poi nd the sort of damage it could cause*

There's loads of stuff at walmart that I would have thought no one would buy...
Considering they sell guns at our US walmarts for cheap, fire toys wouldn't be too far off the "danger meter".
I'll stick with the hop shop either way.

My guess is it is a set-up for another April Fool's joke. The same people associated with this one tried to pull something last year or the year before about fire toys not being sold because of terrorism or some such.

I'll believe it when I see it in the sporting goods section.
Especially since when Wal-Mart, Discovery Store, Tops Markets and a couple others have tried in the past to sell non-fire spinning stuff it didn't catch on.
Until then, there are a couple of really great web designers, a couple megalomaniacs and some who fully understand how many of the spinners of the world are fighting against large corporations enough to realize that this would be a great joke.
Oh...and, the "press release" is dated April 1, which is TOMORROW. Kind of kills the authentication, don't you think?

If you read the "release" it is from www.walmartmergers.com which is not a real wal-mart site. Try going to the links on it, they either lead to a *real* Wal-mart site or to a dead end.
The site it is mocking is this one...

Which has all of the currently updated news relating to Wal-mart.
I think that everyone who has gone in on this joke has forgotten how it really pissed people off last year.
And this was not well thought through at all.
Wal-Mart is too easy to verify and too unbelievable to carry this stuff.
This was just lame and not even remotely amusing.
The date alone on the press release is a dead give away, but beyond that, there are too many discrepancies and too many legal issues with fire toys not governed over by the law for them to be sold in a store like that. Like I said before, the non-fire varieties didn't sell, so they would not go to a more specialized one, less selling one without success in the wider test market first.
It seems alot of effort was wasted, again, and perhaps people should focus on making better products rather than ticking people off. There are jokes and then there are sheer irrational time wasters.
