What do you think?

Good or bad?

Some people get offended when people do it.

It's one of those things that people get yukkied out by. I personally get yukkied out by the sound of people scratching an itch on their skin.

Anyone have any bad habits that don't necessarily offend people?

or

Do you get offended by any little habits people have? Has anyone ever been offended by some little habit you've done?

I crack my knuckles a lot.. my knuckles have actually grown a bit since I did it.. I don't think it's really that harmful, honestly.. at least I don't do it as often as I used to!

I hiccup a lot, although it's not a habbit, because I can't help it, but people always stop and stare, if we're eating or something.. lala...

Also, I don't wear socks or slippers in my house... In Germany, EVERYONE wears things on their feet. I can't I need to have my feet freeeee!!!

My lovely boy cracks his neck in a very painful-sounding way. I tell him it'll give him arthritis, but he laughs at me and says it feels better frown

I hate that sound - in the same way that I hate the sound of balloons rubbing against each other.

However, fingernails down the blackboard is fine biggrin

there is absolutely no proof that it causes arthritis, and in fact the few studies on it show rather the reverse - no indication of a conneection between arthritis and knuckle/joint cracking whatsoever.

It is also completly unknown if any damage is caused at all, but studies that might say something to this effect either demostrante no damage, inconclusive results, or at best "weak evidence" of damage to the joint.

Cavatation (rapid movement of a gas or liquid) is the cause of the sound

Really? I read a study recently that said there may be some 'slight damage' of the muscles... here's the concluding paragraph biggrin

"So what can we conclude? There's weak evidence for some damage to the joints; there's a reasonable, but speculative, model for the mechanism. There is hard evidence that the effect is not inevitable; not all members of the KC groups showed damage. I would conclude, personally, that it's quite likely that cracking your knuckles could lead to some unpleasantness down the road; and since there's little reason to continue an annoying and asocial habit, I'd suggest quitting. But since your loved ones have probably already suggested this many a time, it's unlikely you'll take my word for it. "

"weak evidence" is science lingo for "well, I want to prove something but am completely unable to so I'll say it in such a way that no one can really argue with my statement since it can't be disproved either"

if the best you can do is "weak evidence" at a science conference, then you should just keep your mouth shut and not ruin your reputation on supporting conjecture.

*shivers* no, i dont like the fingernails on the blackboard.

I hate people jiggling their legs or feet, especially in exams, because once i notice it, i can't ignore it. And they're always rubbing or hitting on something, which, in an almost silent exam room is kinda hard to ignore. But what is strange, is that they hardly notice they're doing it.

Firepoise, have you ever had your guy crack your neck or back? If not, I suggest you try it. You will be amazed at how good it makes your body feel when everything is back in it's proper place. Trust me, if it doesn't need to be cracked, it won't go so no need to worry there.

I crack my neck, back and knuckles several times a day. Feels great...

The only thing Im worried about is that sometimes my thumbs, if left immobile for any length of time, freeze up and I have to move them for them to crack. Maybe Im getting arthritis or something. smile

I crack every joint possible in my body, my knees when I get out of bed, my back, neck, fingers (all joints, even deep in the thumb, if you pull it it crack inside you hand...) And especially my knees and back feel a lot looser after I crack them... I asked an Ergonomics student, and she said I might wear out your cartilage (same stuff as whats in you ears, it acts as a lubricant so you bones don't just slide against eachother) Arthirtis is nonsense.. of course you can get it, but not from cracking your joints.

btw my knuckles seem pretty big too, maybe that's from cracking them ?

Sometimes when I've been sitting down for a while say at school or something I'll stand up and crack me back. Place your fists on your spine and bend back and it's like a collection of chunky cracks. My chiropracter tells me off. But I don't do it often anymore. I used to crack my neck if I'd slept the wrong way that night.
