Dont you hate it when your spinning and being called gay or something just for spinning LED's or Fire. I mean people dont understand how difficult it is or how dangerous it can be. I know some people here probably are able to filter it out now and pretend it wasnt said. But it is really lame how people do that. Arent we supposed to be living in an open minded society? Plus whats up with people calling things Gay anyhow, wouldnt you expect people to describe it differently after passing the age of 16.
i suppose the good part is being able to come to this website and share a common interest with so many other people, where i live i havent really met any other spinners but have started to teach a few.

My friends and I went swimmning at this lake one day last summer and while we were there we met some people that were staying the night and partying so we told them we would come back. We got back there at like 11 oclock and I told them I was gonna spin fire. They didn't know what it was so i explained and one guy with them said he could do that and it wasn't that harde. Well i had a pair of wicks and some etremely heavy practice pot made out of a sock and alot of rice. These things were heavy! I told him to be careful and maybe within 10 seconds he was on the ground curled in a fetal position holding his balls. I always warn people before I let them spin but its up to them to take my advice. I must say people around my area are pretty cool and don't say nething. When I am practicing at the crappy strip mall in my town I mostly just spin to entertain little kids they seem to watch me the most.

what really anoys me is when my friends, whom i have breifed on poi, refer to fire poi as "real poi". gah! it's not even like the mauri invented fire poi, that came later. if its poi, its poi. you can't have "fake poi"

I did my first bit of poi busking the other sat night in Cork city centre, started about 11.30, so lots of young drunks, mainly the townie types if thats what you'll call 'em, lads in designer gear, girls with skirts round their arse's and legs up to the necks.. you get the picture. So after reading these sort of threads, was expecting quite a bit of abuse, and not much money... the first comments was before I even started by a couple of young lads. And the comments " can you do tricks?... go on, do one now!!!" And they wasn't taking the p*ss, then when I started some girls were like... ooohhh, thats cool, and some asked if they could have a go. But then on of my balls dropped out
. It was home made poi, and the shoe laces weren't tight enough DOH.. so I only did about 5-10 mins... but NO abuse, no nasty comments. I will be going out longer next time (hopefully), so maybe then I'll get some grief, to which I'll probably just smile back as I'll have my music blarring in me ears!!!!

I gave up busking in cork. Most I ever did was four hours. Just wasnt worth the hassle for the money. Which was almost nothin after the cost of the fuel and taxi n stuff. I find that if you have a drummer it makes all the difference in the world.
Myself and Fear-Tine were doing fire outside the opera house on saturdy night from 10pm until 2pm. Not busking but people threw money at us anyway. :-)
Its a nice spot to practise in during the week to because they turn off all the lights in the square and almost no one goes over there. Plus early on you have all the skateboarders if you fancy a free audience with no money.
We'll be spinning again this weekend same place. Three of us. Come with dude. You been around for ages and we've seen no sign of ya....
I love busking, dublin or galway are easily the best venues, you get more tourists and hippies and much, much more money.
Drunk people are the worst, you can almost tell which ones are going to be hassle. They all wear the same shirts (or mini skirts) and are all more or less the same age group. My policy is that if any asks for 'a trick' or has something smart to say; I hassle them for money. In a nice way of course. They either tend to cough up or move along fairly lively.

I always get asked if i use real fire...I just offer to let them touch i if they dont think its real - they never do though i wonder why...

I've never been insulted, most people are fascinated (cos I'm the only poister in the village). And when I mention that they are originally from the Maoris of NZ they think it's a very "cultural" thing to do.
I loved that "yeah, touch my cold fire" reply.

I do alot of practice in my free time/lunch/spares at school. I always sit in the hallways juggling with my friend or spinning with sock poi. We get alot of strange looks for the sock poi. Not so much for the juggling. I think practicing in public, while ultimately can be a good thing for getting over stage fright, is incredibly annoying.
We'll be trying new tricks or anything we can think of (we're all self taught except for anything we can find on the net) and dropping balls all and people would laugh and throw out the common "You suck" or walk away snickering and muttering under our breath. I've recently found that if I'm practicing with bean bags they work great if as they are walking away they get hit in the back of the head with it. They'll either always just try and act cool and walk away or try and pick a fight (Although they never last long. A quick joint lock and they'll storm off in a storm of curse words. But that's what you get when you pick a fight with people who've been in martial arts their entire lives. I try not to use striking if possible, it seems not worth it, or over the top if that makes any sense)
As for practicing with poi, most of the people who walk by either skirt to the sides and give a side glance as they hurry past afraid of getting hit (Despite we stop or go to a simple 3bt or forward spin till they pass). Some people throw out the usuall "What the hell are you guys playing with socks for?" or the ever so loved "Yeah I can remember doing that when I was like 7. It's stupid but I can do everything you're doing with my eyes closed it's so easy".
To these people I let them try with my super heavy sock poi (I use them to train with, they've got heavy and hard balls in them, hurt alot when you hit your self (I learn moves very clean when I use these lol), and they usually limp off swearing and muttering.
The people who don't heckle are usually really cool about it though.
Some people will stop, have a chat, watch a bit. Some ask us to teach them so we'll try and teach them like a basic cascade and they'll stay with us for an hour or so just trying to get that, or more advanced tricks if they learn fast.
Others will watch, give a compliment or suggest we do performances (heh, yeah right, not yet...).
Over all I find alot of the younger people are pricks about it. Some of the older people are more forgiving about it. I did actually have one passer bye say "Aren't those supposed to be made out of a plant or something?" and I was amazed he recognized the concept of traditional poi. He was in a hurry otherwise I would have loved to have a chat with him about the origins.
As for buskers, I tend to always give money to them when I see them. Where I live it is a regulated profession now. You have to sign up with the city to do it otherwise you can get arrested. But because of it everyone is alot more appreacitve about them now. We even have a yearly festival titled Buskerfest!
I usually give money regardless because I know how long it takes to get the skills, then put together a routine for performance and how much they put up with on the streets. It's the same reason I tip large at resturants. I've been there, and I know how bad it can be sometimes.

I discovered spinning when I was playing with a broomstick one night during a party. A friend suggested I light the ends on fire and my addiction began.
Well one of my friends has quite an antagonistic sense of humor, and so my staff is now always called the "Whirly Girly Twirly Batton". Havn't heard it much since I've actually gotten good now, but I think it made me laugh every time I heard it for the first few months...
I really don't see how being called a raver or being asked for drugs is an insult though... I get asked for drugs all the time and I just reply that I don't know where to get any. I find most people are very accepting of that answer. And if they aren't, they're probably real, REAL messed up already and you can mess with them!

Last night I went to this "rave" party near my town and to be quite honest it sucked. Give me a bunch of dirty hippies and a good band any day of the week and I'd be happy. Alot of the kids weren't that cool and kind of a$$holish.
Anyway after it was ending my girlfriend and I went outside to spin fire for some people we knew and for any interested parties. The first spin was good and everyone liked it. Then as we were resoaking the wicks more people came out. When my girlfriend started spinning they started saying some vulgar things and some pretty stupid stuff like let me see your cervix. Then some jerk came over and got within a few feet of my girlfriend and was saying stuff then started trying to grab the wicks. I asked him to stop then i had to yell at him to get away and started walking over and he backed off. If he didn't he would have learned not to touch wicks when one of my lit monkey fists knocked him upside the head. (I really wouldn't have hit him unless he physically grabbed her but the thought is good) Anyway I was talking to this guy after we stopped who saw me spin at another party and he thought it was really cool along with most of the other people. So at least I made some peoples nights a little bit better. They understood that if that jerk burnt his hand grabbing her wicks we would have gotten in trouble and not been allowed to spin there anymore. This is the first time Ive ever had a real problem with anyone while spinning but it doesn't matter I still had fun and nothing bad happened. I guess those kids ideals are more PLU then PLUR.
