Back in the day, about 7th through 9th grades, I used to roller skate. Not with roller blades but with quad speed skates. My friends would laugh at me cuz I couldnt skate fast. I always lost any race I would get in and had many accidents while attempting to skate fast. It just wasnt my style. I was a more dancey skater interested more in the shuffling/figure skating stuff and was fairly good at it. Anyway, after a while I out grew my rather expensive and nice rollerskates and stopped doing it. I found poi a few years later at the age of 20 and have taken to it in much the same way as I did with my skating. Over the past year and a half Ive progressed further than I even imagined with poi. And now, this year for christmas, I got a new pair of roller skates...

...And now, I just got back from my first poi/skate session and I gotta say, it was FUN. First off, I tried my new skates out for the first time. I was surprised by how fast I picked everything back up after about 6 years of not doing it. In fact, I really think Ive somehow gotten better through non-practice. After I got my backwards skating and turning down I picked up my poi and started spinnin. Again, surprisingly enough, it was much easier than I anticipated it to be. I felt I could almost spin my poi freely while I was skating, as if I werent wearing them at all. Transitioning moves, turning and all that jazz was really no problem. The skates add such a nice fluid touch to everything because figure/shuffle skating is something of a dance form alone. You can do things like skate backwards but make it look like youre walking forwards (like a moonwalk) while doing an iso buzzsaw or something. Or even do splits while skating and do some between the leg stuff. Theres tons of really nice skating move/poi move combos and they go really well together IMO.

Hopefully sometime in the next few months I can get some video footage of what I can do. I really think more people should get into skate/poi because I think theres a bunch of untouched potential in it.

Heh, worry not Dunc, I have plans smile

Fire skates wont work too well though because there isnt room for too much wick, therefore they would go out rather fast. Instead, I have two other ideas that are in the works. First Ill be making an LED kit for them so the floor glows underneath them. I was also thinking that I could make a flint mechanism that will throw sparks as my wheels spin. Could use one or the other (both would be too much). And they're gonna also have blue flames air brushed on them with UV reactive white outlining. They're gonna be the pimpest skates around once they're doine.

Not to sure about the blue glowiness with fire but the sparks could look well cool! have you seen those flaming uns you can buy? You could modify a few of them for your skates quite easily.

Hah, I just found this awesome old school skate video. Doesnt have anything too crazy in it but it is definately a great vid. It even features people skating while juggling and hoola hooping. Perhaps something to hold yall over till my vid gets made smile

I've actually been looking into this and trying to get it done (read in: former figure skater)...with fire...the only problem is finding a rink where they will LET you burn...something about insurance and all that. And ice melting; that too. Not as many places are as keen on the idea as you would think. However, some of the bigger moves and jumps that you can do off the ice look wicked (according to other people). So much for that. But i've found that skating is useful because you gain a lot of timing and hand-eye co-ordination and dancy-ness and musicality and all that jazz

Wow Icon I am so psyched to hear that you're experimenting with this. I was at a skate party for a friend's birthday recently and thought it would be totally fun to skate & spin at once. Spinning around on your skates while doing a 360 weave would look awesome! I'm not good enough a skater to really pull it off, but it's cool to know someone out there is giving it a go. Can't wait to see the vid.

taken out of context i must seem so strange

i'm a bit wary though because the few moves i do do off the ice (jumps) have a tendency to extinguish the flames if its not at the beginning of the burn

Well, that seems like itd be hard to do, at least with my cathedrals (considering I can hardly put em out when I wanna). But also, I think Im gonna be staying away from doing many jumps or fast spins when spinning poi. Im more concentrating on the fancy footwork of the jam skaters. I pretty much just wanna look like Im floating as I spin smile

Hey, dont say you wont be able to do anything fancy. All it takes is practice ya know, same as poi. If its something you really enjoy and you do it enough, youll get better automatically.

oh yes... practise makes poifect... but i have a balance issue.... apparently. people (lots of different ones) keep asking me what's wrong with it and my mum would not get me a unicycle for christmas because of it... now as far as i'm aware, it is not a pressing issue, but others tend to disagree...

that doesn't stop me from skating of course, i'll just need knee pads (and elbow pads and a cushioned suit... maybe one of those sumo ones...)

re: 3.) poi-fing as a concept was established some time ago but as far as i know it's yet to be completed with fire or without. part of the problem is getting a photo to prove it and part of it is i'd want any wave i'd be photographed poifing on to look like a decent size.... s'gonna hppen one day tho isn't it dunc?

now i'm actually trying to think of it's logistics... i mean you'd have to keep the poi dry and fueled, and you'd have to keep your lighter or what not dry too but you cna't keep it with the poi because lighting a lighter with fluid on it would be bad and than you'd have to wait until you've already caught the wave because you need to paddle to catch it, so if you have a GOOD run you'd have maybe 10 seconds to spin fire... than you land and well, your poi are soaking wet and you've officially polluted...since the poi are wet you rally only get one shot per poi head i think...
we'll seeee...

if you breath fire while skating backwards could it cause propulsion? (did i spell that word right?)

That video was classic!!

A coupla years ago I was hunting for a pair of 4-wheeled skates but the only ones I could find were professionals for around 70 squid! Shockingly expensive, I thought. Then the sun smiled on me and I found a pair that were my size(!) in these cool red and blue and yellow colours (like I had when I was about 6!) and for only £2.50!!!!! How excellent was that!!

I been z z z zoooming around on 'em since with my boyfriend on his longboard, I'm not too good at using the stoppers though (which is kinda essential!) so I kinda T-stop, although this ruins the wheels more. It's brilliant fun though, free and exhilarating!

nice one!

i once had the coolest skates in the world, they were bright blue, then i think they got too small because they are no longer here!! *wails* so i'll have to get some new ones... do you think the ones they sell for kiddies would do the job? or do i need to know complicated stuff about bearings?
